Reading several great threads from Disers on DC. We are staying soon in OldTown Alexandria.
Sounds like your family is in this area.
Could you recommend some good, inexpensive restaurants for families? Grandkids are 8-16 yrs. Thanks in advance.:)

I used to live in Old Town..it's been quite a few years. I did go for a visit in 2008 though. My favorite inexpensive restaurants were. Hard Times Cafe on King Street. http://www.hardtimes.com/ King Street Blues on St. Asaph st. http://www.kingstreetblues.com/ and Union Street Public House http://www.unionstreetpublichouse.com/ Union Street isn't really cheap anymore, but they have some reasonably priced sandwiched and they used to have a really good burger. Along those lines there is also a Five Guys in Old Town as well as Chipotle and other chains. In 2008 we stayed at a hotel near the Duke St Whole foods and had a few meals to go from their salad bar.

Thanks for the help, Tw1nsMom! I will check those out, and I like the Whole Foods grocery idea, too.:)

*There's a nice little sushi place called Bumblefish on the corner of Washington & King, not really fancy at all basically a take-out type of place but the food's good & quite reasonable.
*There's also a "La Madeleine"(chain) on King between Washington & the Potomac...it's a restaurant that serves French food cafeteria-style. Delicious but salty (if anyone's watching their salt-intake).
*There's a funny little Italian place, NOT fancy at all, called 'Pines of Florence' also on King. Food's pretty good and the prices are reasonable.
*I've heard good things about 'Burger joynt' on Washington Street, they have some kind of really cool multi-flavor drink dispenser that kids are talking about.
*"Las Tapas" on King...Spanish restaurant. This place has been hit or miss for me. When it's good it's really, *really* good...and when it's bad it's almost OK but really not worth the money.

There are also some chain restaurants..a Chipotle, Bread & Chocolate on King as well.

We used to love going to Generous George's on Duke Street, but haven't been in years. They were known for their pizzas and pasta.

Used to really like Chadwick's Old Town down almost on the water, but the service and food have gone downhill, I was there recently and won't be going back any time soon (if ever).

agnes!

Other places I've taken people to that haven't been listed:

Mango Mikes--carribean food and the drinks in the crazy cups are fun

Bugsy Pizza---used to have a pizza buffet but not sure now

Austin Grill--simple tex mex and a chain in the area. Not my favorite but its okay.

Our favorite place is The Wharehouse but I'm not sure it would be considered very family friendly.

Another place that I can't think of the name is a crepe place but my husband says it's "fussy." There's also a good bakery that has take out food priced by the pound or container. It is right on King St. I had a sandwhich and cupcake there and both were excellent and priced decent.

We ate at Whole Foods a few times when we stayed in Alexandria-breakfast mostly. It was pretty good and reasonable for DC (our hotel didn't have a free breakfast). There are so many restaurants in Old Town. There is a cute old fashioned looking ice cream place in Old Town that the kids will probably enjoy.

Joe Theismann's right outside of the king street metro is good if there are sports fans, but it can get rowdy!
