Discrimination...who has experienced it?

Once sexually discriminated against. When I was told when a moron got a "promotion" and I deserved it. I was told "Yes you are more qualified but he is a man" Stupid and they actually must have been nervous I would sue because I got a sweet bonus that year worth way more than the promotion. So I let it slide.(bad for woman's rights I guess but I was the ONLY woman at my firm doing what I did)

And then once when we were driving down to Florida and stopped at a Cracker Barrel. I went in with the kids while dh parked the car- they were seating us in an area when dh walks in. They proceed to move us to another section- that was clearly the Hispanic section. I couldn't believe that this crud still went on(this was in 2000)
I wrote to the company and complained they apologized and said they would speak with management there. But it turned us off of Cracker Barrels.

Cracker Barrell, Waffle House and Denny's have all been sued numerous times by customers for discrimination.

I am short 4'8" and I face discrimination every day. Some things are worse than other things. The stares and comments get to you sometimes. Buying clothes are a nightmare. All things are up high. When you go to a store you have to constantly asking people to help you get things. I think the worse thing is perfect strangers coming up and asking how tall I am and asking if their kids can stand next to me to see how tall I am so that they can see if their kids are taller. There are some jobs that I simply can't do. At one grocery store that I went to their interac machines were just too high. The cashier offered to put all the information in as well as my pin #. I don't think so. The manager said that he would make sure that the handicapped cashier would always be available. The next time I went in I asked someone where the cashier was for the handicapped lane was. I was told that I could just use one of the other lanes. I told them that I couldn't reach the interac machine. Again I was told that they would be happy to enter ALL my information. The manager was no where to be found. I won't go back.

The Denny's incident is awful and I don't blame you for not setting foot in one again.

Wow! I am so glad for the brave people who did what they did to change some of the bigotry and discrimination that was acceptable at the time in the United States. If not for people like your parents, we wouldn't be where we are today (not that we don't have a ways to go).

How did you handle watching what you witnessed as a child? Were you frightened? Empowered by the good that your parents were doing? It's hard for me to imagine.

Hey Tigger&Belle,
One thing that really help is that since I grew up in NYC, I had (and still have) many, many caucasian friends, so I was pretty lucky in that I KNEW that not all white people were flaming racist. So just like today, with every negative experience there were many, many regular summer days.

Unfortunately ;) I was a pretty typical kid I thought my parents were uncool and I wasn't very gracious about having to be dragged down south to my grandparents. I love the south now but remember in the 60's there was no air condition :scared1: So at 9-10 yo I probably drove them crazy with "I'm bored", "it's hot" "can I have ice cream money"

Ugh on the no a/c! My grandmother lived in Oklahoma and not only didn't have a/c, but when I was real young she didn't have indoor plumbing. :scared: We didn't visit her often, but yikes when we did!

I'm glad that you had a lot of good experiences, also. Doesn't erase the bad ones, but it beats the alternative.
