SEWING MACHINE SUGGESTION HELP!!!!!

I might be in the market for a new sewing machine.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good and not really expensive machine that does embroidery too? I have a plain Janome now and it really does everything I need it to but I would love to be able to put some "extras" on some outfits without it being applique, like her name or just some small pictures of stuff (example: bumble bees, ladybugs, etc.) and maybe some decorative stitches.
I have the Brother SE 350. It does embroidary and it sews. I got it at Wal-Mart and it cost $350. I love it. It's electronic, it cuts the thread itself, it backstitches by itself, and it comes preloaded with lots of embroidary images. It does button holes too.

I am a cross stitcher and I am looking for fabric to go with an Epcot project I am working on. Any suggestions as to where I might find something?

TIA
Hancock fabrics and Joann's have Epcot type fabric. The one from Hancock's has flags with children's faces on it. It is mostly red. Joann's has the others. One has a blue background and the other has a cream colored background. All of them have children's faces on them I believe.

With all this talk about Fancy Nancy I decided to see what all was available in the world of Fancy Nancy. I found this page if anyone is interested in printing it out for thier Fancy child.

THIS IS SOOO EXCELLENT! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you all for the nice compliments! I really really appreciate it. It makes me want to sew more and more because I can't wait to show all of you! I'll be done with her pooh outfit tonight, just gotta sew the pants together. They were giving me trouble because I was trying to figure out how to put a ruffle at the bottom....I gave up and did the cuff because it's in the directions. :rotfl2: I'll post when I finish, and I'll dress my little model up tomorrow :)

The transformation process has begun, she's becoming one of us. :stir:
BTW, where's the maniacal laughter smiley???

WHO wouldn't giggle at that?? and yeah, it is a freaky way for her teeth to come in!! I Love antagonizing my children too!!:rotfl2:
Wow, so many cute items shared!

Pooh outfit complete...finally... The shorts are a little bulky in the crotch but hopefully they'll look fine on. I just want to move on to the next Disney trip outfit. I'll post pics in the morning of Violette in it.

FABULOUS!!! I bet Violette will make it even cuter!!! I was just thinkin of making a ruffly top like this style for Lily, I made the round necked dress for her then remembered a picture of me at her age in a similar style dress, my mom confirmed that I did have one. I then remembered a ruffle top like this one and thought it would be another good nostalic piece to make her
GREAT JOB!!

JENNY: all I can say is WOW! Your outfits are great, all the other kiddos at WDW are gonna be sooo jealous.

I started this post tis morning w/ my coffee and am just getting around to finishing so this is my GOOD MORNING! to you all.

This is so pretty - I love that color blue you used. I can't wait to see it on Violette!

As for the Star Wars costumes, I tried to explain who Minnie was supposed to be. She's never seen any of the movies and kept thinking I was talking about Star Tours (she loved that ride). We did get to watch part of one Jedi Academy session but since Leia isn't part of that, I don't think she gets the connection.

Speaking of our trip, here are a few photos:

Later that day admiring herself after her princess makeover at the Princess Fantasy Faire. (Her hair didn't look this way for long because she just had to go swimming that afternoon.)

Zoe and her 2 cousins in their coordinating sets. These were a very last minute project... I was up all night the night before we left trying to get these done. (Her hair was still slightly "princessified" this day.)

Oh my goodness, Zoe looks gorgeous in all her customs!! I LOVE the pic with minnie - the expression on her face is so precious!

I've been lurking around here for a while, and thought I would post some pics of the P&PP outfits I made. I am a definite NEWBIE so they aren't very good, but they were fun to make. I'm looking forward to doing more for our September trip! (and praying for a princess, so I can make some of these adorable girl outfits!;) )

Cute! You did a great gob on them! Welcome and stick around!

Tired of my pictures yet? There's more..LOL

I think that's it!! Thanks for looking....

Jenny

No way are we tired of pictures!!! Wow! You have made so many amazing customs for your trip! They are ALL great! Your kids are going to be the best dressed of the parks!

HI Enchanted princess your Aurora dress is stunning your daughter is going to be the prettiest little girl at the tea party my friend just made me a Belle dress and a bunch of outfits for our trip in August i wish i could sew as it cost me a lot :cool1: :cool1:

I just wanted to let everyone know Miss. Katie only has her bink in bed now. She also didn’t have it last night at all. She is slowly breaking the habit. It is bitter sweet for me, but I am happy it may be coming to an end without me having to go hard core and just take it from her. Thank for all of the advice. I did want to let all the Binky Fairy suggestions to know I tried this and she just didn’t get it.

I told her the Binky Fairy was going to come take her Binky and give it to babies. She didn’t want her to come in the house so we decided to leave the binky on the porch. At bedtime I had her all ready to go and my DD 10- told her the fairy would leave her some money for the binky. So Katie says "the fairy get my binky... leave me some money.... I going to Target and buy a new binky... Yeah!!!" Crazy girl :)

Well, I better run. Good Night!

Love Katie's thinking! Smart girl!

Wow, so many cute items shared!

I still don't have our vacation photos edited to share. I've been so busy since we got back but hopefully I'll have time this weekend. I doubt I'll do a trip report, though, so my post here will have to do... when I'm ready.

Anyway, as I said I've been busy. Here's some of what I've been working on.

BTW - Yes, 2 of the sets are similar to ones I've shared before although the mom I made these for wanted shorts rather than capris. Once I get our vacation photos ready, I'll be able to actually share photos with Zoe in her sets. It's probably the last time I'll get her to wear such outfits on a Disney trip. :-(

Love the outfits as usualy Lisa! You are just so talented! The pirate Minnie is my favorite though! And I loved the pictures of Zoe wearing her customs. How you made it through Disneyland with all of the people who must have stopped you is beyond me! I loved Zoe's matching shoes too! Incredibly cute!

Just about 15 days until our trip and I think the kids have enough outfit...well, more than enough I think...there are a few unfinished projects that I need to finish up within the next couple weeks, but I just haven't been really motivated to sew lately. I figured even if I don't finish them...they will have more than enough anyways. Anyway, here are all the outfits for our 7 day/6 night trip - some of them probably could use some ironing, and also excuse the wrinkly blanket that I lay them on. Most of my dd's customs were made with CarlaC's pattern! Love her patterns!!!!

This is for dinner at Ohana during our first night - ds's shirt is store bought at ToysRus

Cinderella's Royal Table: - not sure which cinderella cotton gown dd is going to wear. I had initially made the one with ruffles and dh said that is not Cinderella's gown because her gown doesn't have ruffles, and suggested that I make another one. I think I will let dd pick. Poor ds - I only made Prince Charming's red pants, and I doubt I will have time to make the top, so I am thinking of just doing a Prince Charming T-shirt transfer/iron on with a design on the Creative DISign board. Notice the line at the bottom of the pants...I must have measured ds wrong, and it was way too short so I had to do a smaller hem!

OH I ALMOST FORGOT!!!! a very warm :welcome: to Adrienne and Amanda!!!

And, I was itching to sew yesterday, which led me to joanns to get some bias tape to make a few pillowcase dresses (something I knew I could finish quickly!) ..which led me, of course, to the clearance fabric, which led me to this very cool vintagey fabric w/ school children and buses and teachers, which led me to a THOUGHT...Why don't I make a shoulder bag for Mac's teachers...something they could throw their school stuff in to tote around. CRAP, cause I forgot that his last day of gifted is THIS Friday even though school is out next friday. SO I have to make one of the bags tonight. B/C after the shopping trip and dinner I cut the other pattern out and had to put the kids to bed. WHY do I do this to myself ?????

Tired of my pictures yet? There's more..LOL

All of your outfits are gorgeous!!! Love them! :worship:

OMG I am SOOO far behind! BTW our honeymoon period with our four year old that we want to adopt is officially over.:rotfl2: It has been a long two days to say the least. Hopefully it will get better over the next few months (think it will). We have her set up to see a therapist and doing all the other things that you do to make sure they are ok. Will just play wait and see but in the past we have had some pretty hard little kiddos to get along with and by the time they leave they always are doing a ton better. Maybe since she is staying we will get to reap some of the benefits of structure on a kiddo!!!

I love everyones stuff. I didn't bother quoting because there is soooo much! My you ladies have been BUSY!

Lisa I love your sets as always ! I really love the pirate stuff! What did you ask for to get Zoe's hair that way? It is PRECIOUS I would love to do it with Alaysias in Dec.

Enchanted Princess would you mind sharing what the pattern is for the sleeping beauty dress? i adore it your other stuff is precious as well! Looks like you are all set! :goodvibes

I love the big give stuff! I still have the minnie dot fabric and I picked up the purple princess fabric for it. Since I cannot sew my way out of a paper bag I thought I would save us all the embarrasment and just send fabric to those that need it lol.

The crown on the big give outfit? What did you use? It is perfect!

I have 10 outfits for Miss Alaysia coming tomorrow. I have not seen most of them. She sent me a picture of this outfit to get me excited lol. I picked out all the fabric for the stuff. Alaysia loved the flower print (we were looking through the clearance section at Hancocks) there was not even a yard of it so I didn't have a lot of high expectations for it turning out well. I thought the seersucker might look ok with it, but was not sure. I am so new to matching fabrics together ... especially ones that do not "go". It was dirt cheap at clearanced at 3 a yard and then 1/2 of that so I went ahead and bought some figured she would play in it if it turned out bad. I think I am going to have to flip buttons out (my fault I didn't specify what went with what) which i can do but I really like the way it turned out! Especially since you figure that fabric for it was around 5 bucks!

P1010110.jpg

She said the pants are all coming out really long though. She said that she cut about 6 inches off the pattern and she still thinks they will be more like pants and less like capris? Is that normal for the easy fit pants pattern?

when I get everything tomorrow i will go through and decide what is done done and post pictures. I am planning on doing some appliques on some of it just have not decided exactly what yet.

Great job!

I know...I need to take my own Eleanor Roosevelt advice...you must do the thing you are afraid to do!

issues issues...

Okay so I just had to share this...it took me a minute to realize it, but when I did I started laughing!

So you know you've been on the disboutique board too much when you start DREAMING about it!

Jham--too much lily's got into my head!!

It's "migraine" season for me around here. Every time the seasons change and the temperature begins to climb or drop, I get terrible migraines. ick for me, b/c they are BRUTAL. But I caught one before it got the best of me, took my drugs and laid down for an hour. (I'm beyond grateful that the whole school is on a field trip today!!!)

so I laid down on my little couch and went to sleep. Next thing I know I'm in an airport with people I haven't seen in a long time. Suddenly I see a little girl walking towards me. I know exactly who she is! It's Jham's Lily!! She's smiling her Lily smile and wearing a little pastel polka dotted outfit and a hat. (I remember that outfit!) She runs over to me and we hug like the oldest and dearest of friends. She climbs into my lap and starts telling me about sewing school. We chit chat about the Disney sewing machine and I introduce her to everyone I'm with. She shows me her new shoes and says that her mom sewed them for her...:rotfl2: We had a shoe tying lesson and talked about riding a two wheeler bike and how since I'd seen her last mommy bought a new room to sew in. (apparently in my dream world we are very good friends Jham!!)

Next scene we are out of the airport and I'm taking Lily to sewing school...or she's taking me...but there were lots of sidewalks and grass...and I saw a fuzzywumble and a hedgehog.

then I woke up.

:lmao:

It took me a minute to realize that I had just dreamed about Lily and sewing!

I don't know where the fuzzywumble and the hedgehog come in...but my migraine meds do odd things to me!

anyhow...y'all have worked your way into my brain!

perhaps i can actually get some work done now that my head isn't fixin to explode! I dislike piles of paper. I better get to that pile. *sigh*

it was certainly good to meet Lily!

:goodvibes :goodvibes

:rotfl2::lmao: I love it. You made me laugh AND cry (as you often do) And Lily would SO climb into your lap and start talking to you--'cus she's like that. It's her thing, she is very comfortable with other people. In fact, we just got back from the 5th grade singing/states floats parade program. The 5th graders were on the risers in the gym singing their patriotic songs and Lily marched up to the front row and joined them :scared1:  :scared1:  She was even "singing". I told her Miss Cammie had a dream about her and she clasped her hands and tilted her head and said "awwww!" Just like this: Seriously, except her elbows were bent so her hands were by her chin. I'm sure I have a better photo of this pose, because she does it a lot, but not one wearing THIS outfit ::yes:: ;)

IMG_1113-2-1.jpg

I'm glad in your dream world we are good friends  and I can sew shoes!:rotfl:

and Jenny, your outfits are amazing!

Ms_Mckenna!! I so admire you're heart and bravery. To go through what you do time and time again. To do the right thing even when it's hard in order to help and hope for a healthy future for these children. Any one of them lucky enough to find a foster/apdoptive mother like you are truly blessed.

In highschool I had a friend whose mother and step father thought since their only was in HS they would close in the family room to make an extra bedroom and begin to foster. I remember meeting their 8 yo foster daughter exactly once. My friend told me how she threw tantrums and refused to take a bath or go to school. I don't think she was there for 3 months. I remember when he told me that they had gotten rid of her b/c of her behavior that even at the age of 16 I thought that beautiful little girl didn't stand a chance if the people who had the heart to help her all gave up on her. They never fostered another child, as long as I knew them.

It takes a very big heart to hang in "after the honeymoon"

I find all of you who have adopted or fostered absolutely amazing and you restore my faith in humanity daily!

Thank you for being who you are.

I love them Lisa! That shy Minnie is one of my all time favs!

Not to be snotty or anything...:rolleyes1 but he was kinda named for Luke Skywalker (he often tells me his middle name is Skywalker--it's not) and he does kinda look like a baby Luke Skywalker...this was a few days after his 5th birthday. I would love to make him a Jedi robe. And I really like Jedi Training Academy much better at Disneyland than at Disneyworld. There is just a lot more breathing room and it is a better setup. And I bet if you jump up and down yelling for them to pick your child :rolleyes1 they might pick that "boy with the excitable parent" :confused3 Not that I'd know anything about that.

DSCN2729-1.jpg

I've had to mega skim the last few pages so everyone's outfits are fabulous and I'm soooo jealous!

I just had to post this really quickly though - My initials are CD and when we were expecting Hope and were trying to choose names, I was obsessed with the initials the names made. Matthew told my mum one day - with a dead straight face - if she was a boy, we wre thinking of Darth Vader to make CD and DVD :rotfl2: :rotfl2: . For a split second my mum was having kittens!!

If you decide to make Luke a robe, Dallas would love one too! They are probably about the same size! He always wants to be a star wars guy for halloween, I just have not been in the mood yet around halloween to make a star wars costume.

Here is my little jedi, I think the shirt did the trick to get picked. He hardly said a word and couldn't see his sign. He fought Darth Maul though and I could not get one good picture.

:rotfl2: That story so made me cry too!! Want a couple of DORKS!! I think our Lily's are 2 peas in a pod. She does that head tilt...it's her "I'm cute" face. Whenever anyone gives her a compliment she does this. Once a month on sunday my DH plays at a local icecream shop (TONYA and MATT'S in NORTHDALE FOR ALL YOU Tampa DIS'ers!!) and it's the ONE gig that we can take the kiddos to see Dada play guitar (cause he NEVER does that at home:confused: ) You cannot keep lily away from the stage. She stands right next to him and shakes her hips and plays her shaker egg and sings along (she likes to wear her "princess" dresses so she can twirl for everyone!!)
at first I tried to control it but found out quickly she was born to be on stage, so I let go.

Ms_Mckenna - so sorry it's tought right now. Isn't it funny how yo uwake up one day and realize the honeymoon is over? Like a light swithch...
I'm praying things will get better quickly. You know what's happening with her, and you know why. And you know that she needs help. That's part of the biggest hurdle to over come. I pray it'll happen quickly for your family.

I ditto everything T-beri has said. I've said it before... You're an amazing person! It takes an incredible person to be able to have the fortitude to be a foster parent. Bless you!

AND... Love the dress! I've never had the problem with the easy fit pants. With that pattern, it gives you specifics on how to make them the length that you want. I love that pattern.

I have two questions:

First: For those of you out there who do not have sergers, when you sew something, do you zigzag around every piece before you start? I know LisaZoe said that she did this before she got a serger but I was wondering if anyone else was this anal, or is it just me? I hate to have little threads hanging off everywhere and this seems to do the trick until I get a serger but was just wondering. Of course I'm doing a storybook panel skirt with lots of small pieces and hate zigzagging all of them but too anal to stop!

Second: This is probably something that only I don't know,..........but when you buy fabric there are all of the circles on the sides with numbers in them. What do those mean? Is it for buying coordinating fabric and colors? If I buy a fabric that has a blue circle with a number 4 in it, will it match another fabric that has a blue circle with a number 4 in it?

Okay, thanks for the break from zigzagging! I'll get back to it now!

I need a serger so I can stop all of the zigzagging! Or no more patchwork skirts with little pieces!

Because you ladies (and Tom) are so talented!!!!!!:worship:

But I am comforted in the fact that I making it with love....

Um, I just zig zag the seams after they are sewn together and trimmed. But yes, I do zig zag all of the inside seams.
But am figuring out the serger sat.

No serger here...sigh...someday! I sew my seams and then go back and zigzag the 2 pieces together (does that make sense? Instead of ironing the seam open, I zigzag together and press to one side). I only zig zag exposed seams. I used to zig zag every individual piece, but found I was zig zagging a lot or areas that weren't exposed and didn't need to be zig zagged. I'm all about efficiency. Just realized typing zig zag over and over is a little challenging.
