I know this was discussed (waaaay back). Where can I get Pokemon or Thomas the train fabric? (flannel) I wnat to make a pair of lounge pants for my nephew.

I saw thomas flannel at Joann this week. I have been off the board for a few days, sorry!! Everbody's stuff looks great!! Love the crab outfit!! the crabby looks great tilted!!!!!

So i have been very busy sewing some B-day outfits for my kids ,I finished Jayedyn's and wanted to share with you all , Today is her B-day she is 7 ... and she still loves it when i make her clothes.
I will have some boys stuff to post soonish, friday For Khrystian's Bday and monday for Logan's (it's Xmas at my house )

I love the outfit! Very cute yet also very grown up looking. I really like the coordinating cuff on the pants - need to keep that in mind for my DD.

You did an awesome job on that applique! Love the colors of the outfit. Parker is getting so big!

Thanks to you I bought the Aline pattern and DH printed it and brought it home tonight, I read it thru and Im going out tomorrow to buy fabric for an aline top and easy fit pants for her birthday party sunday. I love this pattern- I really like a lined pattern.

Im learning-after finishing Ariel outfit that I do not like the "bias tape" edges of most patterns, I find little armholes to be a bit tricky and and I dont have a serger so unlined outfits tend to look homemade on the inside. kwim? Part of my issue is probably that Im basically teaching myself to sew clothes. So if a pattern leaves out how to finish something- I assume their last instruction was just that- the last thing Im suppose to do.
I've got the top done and just have to finish the easy fit pants (shorts) tomorrow morning. I did find the pattern a little tough to work with for a size 1 if I wanted to make them into a short. But I've got it worked out.





I have the same problem since I don't have a serger. I hate the way my things look on the inside. I cannot stand for things to unravel after I wash them. The only thing that I have found that seems to work takes a lot of time (but I do it because it looks so much better). After I cut out a pattern I zig-zag around all of my fabric pieces before I do anything to them. Then I sew them according to directions with a straight stitch and I always make sure that after I sew things together I go back over it and zig-zag again. It seems to keep the fraying to a minimum and does look somewhat finished (at least as finished as I can get it without having a serger). I've just got to get a serger though!

So how is this for creative? I was looking in the clearance aisle of Walmart. They had a curtain valence for one dollar. I thought...hmmmmm 15 inches long, by 60 inches wide....a SKIRT!!! Yes I did!!! I brought it home, sewed up the side seams, slipped elastic through the rod hole, and I am done! No ruffling, no finishing any edges. Simple, and the easiest thing I have ever done! Yep easier than pillowcase dresses of t-shirt dresses!!! Since then I have gone back and bought a Tink valence, and a Spongebob valence that were on clearance.

Oh and I bought a tee to match for 1.50. So here is my 2.50, under 5 min outfit

So I went a tiny bit crazy at JoAnns.

I got Buzz to make a top (probably A Line) and denim to make shorts. DD says she loves the fit of her Cars shorts.

Great buys!!! Those are all going to be so cute!!!! I have a few of those panels, but the girls are using them for tiny little doll blankets! That was NOT my plan when I bought them!

Yipee! Finished another project! I made this Pooh dress for Olivia for our trip but I am thinking now it is to summerish even with a long sleeve shirt for December. What do you think? lol, I think the Lime and Hot pink make it summerish and then the white just makes it even more summery. Oh well, I can add it to her overflowing closet I guess unless you all think we can pull it off for our trip!

When I first signed on this morning, I had to back up a few pages (the "go to first unread" link just took me to the end of the thread) When I saw your pictures I thought, "Oh, someone found a really cute outfit in a catalog and posted it". I was suprised when I got to your thread and you had made it!!

Anyway here are some pics of the pettiskirt, its not perfect as like i said before i dont have a ruffler yet, so it is all done by hand. The purple strips for the bottom were 4 yards long each, and there were 8 of them! It doesn't look as full and puffy as the brought ones, i dont know what i'm doing wrong! maybe its the fabric that is wrong, i got chiffon, but maybe its not the right type.

Melissa, I think it's adorable!!!! Your kids are beautiful too!!!

I have one of the Sam's pettis, and they are really really full. (they weigh about 1 1/2 pounds each!) It's the fluff on the bottom that gives them most of their poof. They do a double ruffle on the bottom. I took a picture so you can sort of see what I'm talking about:

I have two for more everyday wear underneath things that have lace at the bottom instead of fluff, and difference in fullness is amazing!

It is 5am and I have been up for 2 hrs dealing with reflux. I made a BIG mistake today. I ate like 10 oreos, a couple nibbles of dark chocolate and the realy problem is the brownie with homemade hot fudge sauce I had no business eating so late. PMS made me do it.
Well I did take double strength of my Protonix before bed (11:40) but around 3 I shot out of bed like a cannonball, I tried to sit up in bed, but all I could do is feel the burn. And now its activated my asthma and I have a cough that Im trying NOT to cough. I took a bath and some mylanta and a Pepcid Complete, but really theres not alot I can do but wait-and not cough, it just stirs up the acid.

Where did you find that Martha Pullen pattern? I love that magazine. I probably need to subscribe though, I have a hard time finding it at Joann sometimes.

If you go to the www.marthapullen.com website you will see a link for kits- everything from her past issues- you can also order a past issue. I purchased a couple SewBeautiful and then DH bought a subscription for me for Christmas. He got it from some special magazine site super cheap- it did take 8-10 weeks to start coming- but I love it!

nope, her response was simply "Oh! i must have forgot! I just clip the threads with scissors." But I just cant give ebay ppl bad feedback-unless it's really really outrageous. Like once I ordered a mickey watch and the watch was about $15, they charged me $15 for shipping, then mailed in the cheapest way they could and it cost them like $2 to ship it. I wish I had paid more attention because their auction DID say "if you disagree with our shipping don't buy from us, blah, blah"
Ill post a pic of the outfit and embroidery and you girls can give me feedback on if I should try to cut the threads.

I am so excited, I just had to share my joy! I was at my usual JoAnns yesterday and thought I would check out this wooly nylon thread so many of you swear by... Well they don't carry it... that's not the exciting part! Then I called around and found a nearby store that does carry it (which is good because they weren't doing 50% off online.) and holy cow, it was the biggest JoAnns I've ever been to!!!! It is like 4 times the size of the one I usually shop at. It was like my usual store plus a Michaels all in one store! (they had a huge craft area too, they seem to carry nearly everything they have online!) And, one of my favorite parts.... you take a number for the cutting table!!! This is a brilliant idea, how come more fabric stores don't do this? I got to continue browsing while waiting my turn!!! Its at least 10 minutes further away and in a direction I never go, but I see many return trips in my future....

You lucky girl!!

I was home from work yesterday with Megan because she was sick. I decided to pull out a huge knit remnant that I picked up for $1 at a local discount store. I made DD a pair of capri PJ pants. Working with the knit wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I tried to shir the waistband, but that didn't really work. I'm not sure if I forgot something in my shirring technique or of it was just the knit. Megan was happy with her new pj's.

I got my Pokemon fabric from a fellow Diser (I believe it had been a curtain panel). I haven't seen any anywhere except for Voldemort. And believe me, I look -- my son is POKEMON CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!! Let me know if y'all find any!

I don't have a serger either. My MIL offered to put some money toward one for a Christmas present but I told her to wait until I got really good at sewing. Right now I just use my zig-zag stitch to finish my seams. Sometimes I go around everything twice to make it a cleaner.

WHAT is up with the wooly nylon thread? I've never heard of it. People keep posting about it. What is it? Why does everyone love it?

As someone mentioned, it's fluffier than most sewing thread and gives nice coverage to seams when used in the serger. I mostly use it for rolled edge finishing because the coverage is so much better. Sometimes when I use regular serger thread, I can still see some of the fabric showing through the stitching. Woolly Nylon fluffs out so the fabric is covered. Although most things I've read say to put it in the upper looper only, I use it on both loopers and use a matching serger thread for the needle. One thing to be careful about is when ironing because this thread can melt! There's a similar thread I've heard about but haven't tried called Polyarn that is fluffy but doesn't melt.

BTW - I don't think most of the regular JoAnns carry Woolly Nylon. I always have to go to a Super JA to get it. I just wish they had a bigger color selection.

That's how I finished my edges before I bought my serger. It's not quick but I really think it's worth doing because it definitely keeps fraying to a bare minimum. It also looked more finished to me which I liked even though few people saw the inside of my clothes. LOL I have to say, though, now that I've used a serger I don't think I could ever go back!

Oh yeah, I thought I'd mention another seam finish that doesn't require a serger. It also adds time to construction but makes the inside look wonderful. The seams are called French seams. It's often used when sewing sheer fabric where the seams show through but it can be used on just about any garment fabric. Here's a tutorial: http://sewing.about.com/od/techniques/ss/frenchseam.htm

FYI - I've used this method for some garments but found that it's hard to get a nice flat seam on curved seams so I went back to zigzagging the edge on things like armholes. They aren't as pretty but since I line the bodice area, it didn't show through.

How much would you charge for something like this -- the top and skirt?

I have several people asking me to make their kids an outfit like this but I just don't know what to charge. I don't want to give it away but I don't want to charge an arm/leg for it either. What do you think would be a reasonable price?

I havent sold anything yet. But I would say based on what I have looked at on and other places. Like some where between 50 dollars and 75 dollars.

I (me personally) would figure out how much the material cost. How much the shirt cost. Then determine on average how long it takes to make the outfit. Give yourself at least minimum wage rounding up to the nearest half hour. Determine gas to and from post office, and fabric store. How much for packing materials ( or are you selling locally?) and go from there.

I would buy one of those for between $35 (complete set - inital tshirt) and depending on how detailed the design on the shirt is up to $55. I'm sorry if I didn't help any. Also, you must know that im a bargain hunter,a nd a bit on the "cheap" side.

the thing about that is, a lot of the sellers on have been making these for YEARS and do awsome work. They have a following of people who will buy from just them. It takes a lot of work to establish a clientell like they have.

Not saying OP's work is not worth 50-75 dollars. Just that each set will be different circumstances.
