Thanks for the ideas about the pool party. There will be lots of adults at the party. There are 3 lifeguards at the center and then dh and sil were both lifeguards, plus we'll have at least 5 other adults. There will be 10 kids total. I'm leaning towards cupcakes and goodie bags after swimming. I'm hoping it's not too tacky. I'm always confused when "ettiquette" is involved.

Still no pettiskirt today. I'm such a slacker. I'm feeling better thankfully. DH is going in to get the big sniperoo today though. So I'm sure tending to his every need I won't have much time to sew.

HELP!!Ok, now that I've got your attention I need your help! My 8 year old has her birthday next month. The original plan was to have it at the local college activity center. They've got an indoor pool and you can rent a classroom to have your party in. Well I just found out today that they no longer rent out classrooms and you can't have cake or presents by the pool. My daughter really wants to have a pool party. So the only other thing that I've come up with is to have a quick party at our house with cake and ice cream, open presents and then everyone will meet up at the activity center and go swimming. The only thing is that it's 20 miles from my house to the activity center. I don't know what to do. It would have been so much easier to just have it all at one place. Do you think people will still come if they have to go to two seperate places? Or should we just nix the whole cake/presents and hand out goodie bags when it's time to leave the pool? I need ideas ladies!!!! (and Tom )

I've got to 2nd what my sister said about the pool party. I don't know if she mentioned that the 11 year old that drowned was at a school function with adults around. But, the adults were talking and not giving their full attention to the kids in the pool (which is what HAS to be done if you've got kids in a pool). My cousin's little boy drowned in their pool, my friend's brother drowned in a pond, a little boy Teresa was close to drowned in his pool- it happens ALL the time! Of course, it's up to you what you want to do and I'm sure if you have the pool party, you will make sure there are plenty of adults around to devote their full attention to the kids in the pool! Off my soapbox now!

For all of you trying to lose weight! Great job! Even though I can't lose weight right now, I'm trying to be very disciplined in my gain. I read an article about babies having a greater chance of becoming obese if their mother's gain more than 25 pounds during pregnancy so I'm trying to stay under that. Also, since I carry some extra "cushioning" around anyway I don't need to have to take off a ton of weight after the pregnancy anyways. Right now I've gained 4 pounds (since I was sick for about 14-16 weeks that was easy to do, it will be the rest of the pregnancy that will be the problem!) and I'm pretty happy with that. Hopefully that will keep me at 25 pounds or under for the whole thing. I only gained 3 pounds with DD4 (sick the entire 41 weeks!) and she was 9 lb 1 oz and gained 28 pounds with DD2 (induced early since DD4 was so big) and she was 7 lb 14 oz.

If you just worry about eating healthy, I'm sure you'll be fine! I did not worry about what I ate at all when I was pregnant. It was a free-for-all. I gained 25lbs with Tessa and 40lbs with Sawyer!! I got the weight off quickly with Tessa, and then an extra 30lbs. But, it was much harder with Sawyer!!

Okay, me again. This board is addicting. My question is: how do you all manage to post so much, sew all those beautiful customs and still have time for life???

I am LOVING your photo TR!!! I don't think I mentioned it before, but those are 4 gorgeous kids!!!!!

My answer to your question is that I don't sew very much! But, if I do, I sew during Sawyer's nap time, or after the kids go to bed. Also, speed reading is essential in keeping up with this thread!

ITomorrow, though, is my big day as newest niece is scheduled to join us at noon!! I'm so excited I can't wait to meet her. My SIL found out she was pregnant the third day into our WDW trip last year, so I've been in on this ride from the very beginning. I feel like it's been an even longer 9 mos than my own pregnancies

Back to the help...I am DYING to try to applique a character face but I have NO IDEA how to start. I have read instructions posted, but I am still unclear. Does anyone have a site/link to show a step by step with pictures. Something like "this yellow is the hair. this is what to do. next comes the pink bow in the hair. this is what to do. blah, blah, blah". I am just such a visual person, I can not read and apply. DUH!!!

I looked for something like that before I started applique-ing and I couldn't find anything like that for free! The YCMT applique tutorial is faily good, but even that one didn't give me all the good tips that I have learned on this thread. I have considered doing a little picture tutorial. I might do that next time I applique, although my applique work is far from perfect!

I had my husband buy me a sewing machine about three years ago. I tried to teach myself, but I confess it was just too complicated for me. Especially when my machine was constantly messing up with the thread. So of course I gave up. But really, ever since I was a kid I've wanted to know how to sew, and I confess, I still really really do! I just don't know how I'll ever "get it", lol! By chance do any of you live in Corona, CA or nearby?? I'd love some lessons!

I just wanted to encourage you to try sewing again! Get out your owner's manual for your machine and make sure you have everything threaded right, and your tension set right. Then, start out by sewing a simple elastic waist skirt or something! It's so rewarding to look at something your child is wearing and think "I made that!"

A friend of mine was in a very serious accident yesterday (for you locals, it was the big one that shut down Bangerter during rush hour)...her baby girl passed away early this morning. She was 4. They were hit by a 16 yr old. My heart is breaking for all of them. I keep thinking of little Ashton and her sweet little smile. GO HUG THOSE BABIES!

Oh my gosh, I'm crying. That is so terrible! I can't imagine what I'd do without my Tessie. I'll be praying for your friend, and for you, too. What a tragedy.

Actually, there were two. We have had lots of drowning tragedies that touched close to home.

I want to re-re-emphasize what Heather said. There has to be several adults solely devoted to watching the children, not just adults standing around. I'm sorry if you think I'm being a pain about this, but it's something people think will never happen to them, and it happens way more than people would like to think.

Hi all. I started my free classes (I received how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin and such with the purchase of my new machine) last Tuesday. I have a silly question. What is a fat quarter? I just saw a post about this a lot of pages ago. I know they are fabric but how much fabric do you actually get in them and what can they be used for? The store that I am taking classes have a special going on now, buy 2 get one free. Also another question. I am a beginner sewer so I don't have any supplies. Besides scissors what else is a must for my sewing basket? Thanks for all your help. Soon I will be sewing some stuff to post.

That is cute. I have to ask though, Did you take the t-shirt apart to do the applique? I am working on a t-shirt for DD and am having trouble with turning the shirt. I'm thinking about taking it apart at the side seams, but I'm not sure how it will look after it has been put back together.

I've never had to open the side seams on a shirt. I have always just bunched up the underside of the shirt so I could work on the front. I've never tried opening the side seams on a t-shirt, but I'm sure it could be done.

I am working on a few more things right now, and will post them when I am done. What else do you make for boys other than button down shirts, shorts and applique t-shirts? I don't really enjoy making those button down shirts...

I really appreciate that button down shirt now that I've made one! It turned out great! I love the other outfits, too! I would add rick-rack to the bottom of the pants to tie it all together. It looks great without it, too.

I would be doing the same thing if you were talking about carbon monoxide poisioning. (been there, done that, got the er bill to prove it! ) I'm sorry you've had such tragedies in your family. That's got to be so hard. Perhaps I should rethink the party. Maybe insist that one parent come with to supervise their child. I dunno. I've got a little bit of time to rethink it I guess.

I don't take out the seams. I usually take part of my sewing machine off so I can use the free arm. It takes some practice to keep the extra knit out of the way but after awhile, it's not too bad. However, it is harder on smaller sizes, like anything smaller than a 2T for girls.

A fat quarter is a piece cut 18" by 22". These are preferred by quilters (and others) because it's still only 1/4 yd but the dimensions allow for longer strips cut parallel to the selvedge.

When we had our house and pool (before moving to Atlanta) we were going to have DS a 1st b'day pool party and on the invites I was going to put that each child had to have an adult stay to supervise for safety reasons. We didn't get to have the pool party but I don't think we would have had any problems with a parent wanting to stay to supervise. I know that if my children are ever invited to go swimming with someone else, I hope that person knows that I will be for sure tagging along.

Good morning everyone! Just wanted to share a few things that I have been working on.

This is for my 2 yo ds...I still have to do the buttons/buttonholes.... dh says this is for when he goes meet McQueen and Mater at Hollywood Studios.

The next two are for my dd -
For character lunch at Hollywood & Vine. I made ds a pair of shorts with the same material and am thinking about doing an applique t-shirt for him.

For dd..and I am thinking to wear to Tusker House for breakfast. I had some trouble with the pants for this outfit..took me a while to figure out the front waistband - it has elastic on the back, but not on the front. I still have to do the buttons on this one as well. Do you think I should add anything to this outfit, or just leave it as is?

I am working on a few more things right now, and will post them when I am done. What else do you make for boys other than button down shirts, shorts and applique t-shirts? I don't really enjoy making those button down shirts...

Wow! very cute! I haven't made my boys much. Those button down shirts are a bit of a pain. I love the contrasting fabric strip at the bottom of your Little Einsteins outfit!

Okay, you're all probably pretty sick of the ariel top right now (by the way, I just realized I lost the quote or something, but I just used Carla's portrait peasant tops and dresses pattern from YCMT. I just lengthened and widened the bodice. I love this pattern. It is soooo versatile!) anyhow, last night I made Lily's longish capris to match her peasant top. She was in a modeling mood this morning! The Flounder applique my not have the best placement but it is covering a minor serging accident.

And she keeps insisting I take photos of the back now

Oh and BTW I forgot who asked, but the pink daisy dress is just the stripwork jumper without the strips and I used 2 buttons in the back (on the straps). I made it pretty twirly

I use PaintShop Pro v9. It's definitely able to do a lot more than I need plus it's affordable when compared to PhotoShop.

Yes... keep the house clean, find a man, sing, get Zoe to keep her room clean, etc..............

Okay, here's the recipe! It's a core recipe for Weight Watchers. I served it with some fancy brown rice. The original recipe called for root beer. But, you could use cherry PEPSI, or try something else all together.

DIET CHERRY VANILLA DR. PEPPER CROCK POT CHICKEN

4-8 Chicken breasts
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 cup Diet Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper
1 cup kethup
1/4 cup lemon juice
3 tbs worcestershire sauce
3 tbs brown sugar twin
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder

Mix everything but the chicken together and add it to the crock pot. Brown the chicken in a little bit of oil first and then put it in the crock pot. Cook it in the crock pot until it's done. I took the chicken out and put it on a plate, then transferred the sauce into a saucepan and boiled it until it thickened up. Then, I spooned a little on top of the chicken. It was REALLY good! My husband even really liked it and he doesn't like "weird stuff".

hee hee, I spy the capitalized Pepsi! It's my secret ingredient for my crock pot chili too!!!!! I'm making this for dinner, thanks!

All you LOSERS out there, help meeeee! I gained back all my weight I had lost since after Christmas! I'm so out of control! I'm just feeling too lazy to diet So far today, I've had one packet of Weight Control Oatmeal (as seen on Biggest Loser ) and one Lean Pocket. And about a trough-full of water...slosh slosh. I just need to have my jaws wired

Those are all great -- super cute! I don't have the nerve to try a button down shirt yet. With the Minnie Dot outfit, I would add some black ric-rac to the bottom of the pants and something else that might be cute is putting a flower or something wear the top comes together.

Good luck with the classes -- I always enjoyed the ones that I took. As far as what I "need" in my sewing stuff is scissors, pins, ruler, SEAM RIPPER, extra sewing machine needles. Can't think of anything else right now.

I always go to b'day parties too. My DD3 got invited to a b'day party 2 weeks ago and the mom asked me before hand if Parker was planning to come and after I said "yes", the mom (who I have only met once) said "you can just drop her off at our condo about 5 and pick her up at 9 (it was a pretend sleepover). I told her that I would be staying with her and she looked at me a little puzzled. Did she actually think that I was going to drop off my 3 year old at someone's house that I had only talked to for maybe 30 minutes beforehand! There is no way that Parker would have stayed by herself anyway (separation anxiety) but HECK NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a quick question, for those of you who use sheets to make dresses, how many can you get out of a sheet? Is it worth buying a sheet?

I bought a twin sheets set and made all four of the black and white (with the red, yellow, black dots on the back) customs and only use about 1/2 of ONE sheet and a pillowcase. So, for me, yes, I wasw worth it.

Very twirly...it is sometimes hard to see all of your hard work getting soaked int he fountains in Epcot.

See the little "hidden Mickey" on the back of Chloe's dress??? I made a boo-boo and attached it as a patch. Well, the girls thought it was so cool, I had to make KAtie one, too!
