Disappointed in Surial Bath

On the Oct 5 sailing of the Disney Magic, my DH and I signed up for the Surial Ritual Chamber. What a disappointment!! The steam did not work, kept shutting off. Many of the side faucets to wash off with did not work and the water on the center faucets were cold (would not have been so bad if the steam worked). Many products in the outer room were empty (shampoo, lotions, ect). We talked to girl running the spa and she would mention it to her supervisor, but nothing was done. This was the only disappointment we had our entire cruise. I would NOT recommend this treatment to anyone.

Oh, what a bummer! I wanted to book this for our upcoming cruise! I hope this isn't the norm! I can't believe that they didn't do anything to make it up for you! So sorry to hear it turned out the way it did!

We just did the Surial Bath on the 10/12 cruise! IT was awesome as usual. The steam did not work at all, but we were compensated because we asked for the manager and spoke to him.
Also, the showers only work one at a time and if you are using the one out in the main area, the steam showers do not have pressure. That is what we were told. We loved the products too!

Sorry your experience wasn't good. Always talk to the manager yourself.

The family just returned from our 3 day Wonder Cruise - it was our sixth time on DCL. My wife raves about the spa - and everyone here raves about the surial bath.

When my wife told me that she wanted me to get a facial. I peered at her over my book while on my favorite steamer chair on Deck 4, pulled my sunglasses down and said, you are out of your mind.

Then, I started to think back to the wonderful trip reports about the Surial Bath and The Goddess and everything that happened.

While I had thoughts other than a spa treatment bouncing in my head, I told DW that I would try that with her.

We were escorted into the chamber and I really did not know what to think. Goddess left and we looked around . We went into the steam room and the steam started burning my feet. Really badly. So, I jumped up on one of the seats and tried to get some water. To no avail.

So, we went back out to the main area and my wife started scraping some salt on my partially sunburned back. How relaxing.

So, we returned to the steam room and started working the mud. Interesting, but far from invigorating. Cleaning it off was another matter entirely.

I have to say, it was not as exciting or as invigorating as I expected. Maybe we did something wrong?

I wish Goddess had explained the water system and the treatments in more detail.

Then, at the end, when we saw mud tracked everywhere, we felt horribly guilty and started cleaning up.

Hmmmmm, maybe I'll stick to the little bars that make frozen drinks from scratch!

On the bright side, I won a few sheckles at Atlantis - very exciting.

We had a great time - looking forward to our 7th in 6/03.

Don't feel bad! We didn't like it either, and everything was full and working when we did it.

We did the bath also on the Oct 5-12 cruise, Thuursday and the same, the side showers did not work, and the steam was supposedly working, but never did. It made for a pretty cold inner room. There were lots of products in the tubes when we did it though. Still had fun, but then, we were making our OWN fun. It seemed a lot of things in the Rainforest were not working, too. Most of the showers were malfunctioning in some way. The only steam bath that was warm or steamy at all was the smallest, hottest one. Maybe DCL needs to ride herd on the operator? We would have returned to the spa more had these things been working. I also did the Alpha thing and would skip this, heck of a lot of money to be heated and jiggled and listen to mindless music. Just made my sinuses tickle.

Hey there gscott8075,

Which June cruise are you headed on? We're on 6/21 Western.

after reading this I may just sign us up for Palos and not the spa

Imgoingtodisney, There's no doubt Palo's is a definate. Just pick and choose your spa treatments carefully. There is a difference when you are left to your own accord and when you have a crewmember applying a treatment. I'm a huge fan of massage and the seaweed wrap on the Dec Magic was AWESOME!!!

Wow.....I have never tried a spa anything (or my shy husband), so I was pretty proud of myself when I talked him into the surial bath! I had him read Dave's great report (from the frozen north). This is our first cruise, and I really want to try and have my DH experience only "good things." If this surial bath is so "iffy," I think I will pass. After 18 years of marriage and two kids, it sounded kind of fun, but I don't know.......:(

Since their have been posters with problems with the surial bath - I would ask questions of the staff during a spa tour. Then they would know you were aware of problems and would hopefully make sure you had a positive experience!
Happy sailing!!!! :bounce:

I say you may as well give it a try! Don't discount the treatment because a few people didn't enjoy it. Life would be pretty boring if we all liked the same things! I am definitely going to try the surial mud bath with DH... heck, if nothing else, I get to rub mud on my naked man!

Erin ;)

I can speak mainly for the Wonder, but in 26 Disney cruises the only slight negative that we've ever had with the surial is that some of the product containers have been empty. And that doesn't happen every time...only other thing I've noticed is that sometimes you have to be VERY persistent with the steam button to get it going. After so many cruises, hubby and I have gotten the knack pretty good now. I think the only times we've ever missed this treatment is on the rare occasions when we couldn't get an appointment. It has become a tradition for us ;)

Please do not let my thoughts keep you from trying it - that was simply my experience and I know I am in the minority.

With a sunburned sea salt scratched back and burned feet from the steam, it just was not what I expected.

And, it took a long long time to get the mud off which took time away from other parts of the adventure.

We are going 6/21.

imgoingtodisney, there are PLENTY of other spa treatments available. I've never done the surial bath but have done just about every other treatment, and I love the spa. :)

We were on our first cruise Oct 6-10, and we did the Surial as well as the cabana massages. I also had my haircut. I would do all three again.

The Surial -- we loved the sea salt -- but didn't have sunburns. The mud -- we used every drop.

The steam was so thick that we had to keep the glass door open to breathe some cool air.

I thought it was a great value for $$ spent, and time spent, and the fun we had. She explained that cleaning up afterwards is no big deal, so to make as much mess as we wanted.

We tried every tube of product, too :O)

While we didn't have "fun" -- nudge, nudge, we had a lot of laughs, which were just as enjoyable.

Do try the Surial. Even though things were not all working it IS still fun. I just wonder if they have to throw the towels out or if they can wash that red mud out! I remember a hike on Hawai'i where I sliped in the mud and did an unintentional red-dirt-dye-job on the seat of my shorts and shirt tail. I know why the Hawaiians' use this stuff to dye things. Never did come out.

Yes, that red mud is WICKED! Be care where you get it on your body or you will stain your clothes if you don't manage to wash it all off.
When we first posted photos of the surial on my website, I received an email from someone who was concerned because they thought it looked dirty. On closer inspection, DH and I realized that what they were noticing was that the grout has been stained from constant exposure to the mud! The chamber itself is very clean...it's just that the grout has been permanently stained to another color in spots.
