DIS VMK Board - A Victim of its Own Success?

I have noticed the same thing. We were giving out FREE space suits? So many people came over. Lots of great additions but with it came a lot of people asking for free stuff.

I guess that since we are a nice group of people it was bound to catch on and I am proud to be an active member of this generous forum!

alot of people join Dis everyday! Almost everytime I refresh the the main page, there is a new name under the newest member section!

While that may be true, several people are just coming here to ask for suits.

While it may be,people think that if they are dis, that they will get free items. Then they leave.

On a side note:Someybody,I have noticed that you post in almost every single thread.Have you been to the CB?I think you will enjoy it there because there is a lot to post about there.Just a friendly reminder from your local disboards.:)

yes i post in every thread. I still have no answer to why though. Its really a stumper. I have been to the community boards and uh, pretty much forgot about it.

just came back from the place. I dont really like it. thats why i forgot about it!

Mal, I do not think anyone here would say that starting those diver and space suits threads were a bad thing. Many of us who couldn't play those games, or weren't good enough to win the prizes benefited from those threads. Keeping track of those threads was no easy task, and I think everyone appreciates you for keeping up with them (even when people weren't being all that nice).

I think this thread is more in reference to those people who come here, and post for item but don't contribute to the community. The people who have like five posts, and they are all like, "Can someone give me inferno? Can someone gift me a Herbie suit? Can someone gift me a chicken hat?" etc.

Having threads like the space and diver suits threads was a very good thing, but maybe in the future if this type of thing comes up again, we should take a slightly different approach. Number one, adding a disclaimer that basically says, "Requesting this item does not guarantee that you will receive the item." Number two, if people post on the thread, and then disappear, then they should also disappear from the list.

Thanks for all you do, Mal, and folks who spend their free time winning these games for others.

I know that this is what Blizzard and the others posters meant. But those threads had just become more of a headache than anything....for the reasons you stated and the fact I really felt wrong adding people with only a few posts(if that many) to their names to the list...but did not feel it was my place to judge. I know the gifters can make their own minds up who to gift and who not to. For the most part I try to stay away from confrontation. After the previous one with one of the threads and then this controversy I just as soon walk away.

Mal, i hope you didnt think my comments were directed at you specifically. I know that you started a few of those threads with the best intentions and, knowing you, i know what you were trying to do with them.

When i would see people post their first post on the dis in one of those threads i would just cringe. I stink at the blast game. I never posted in the thread that i wanted a suit, but was kindly gifted (and so were both kids) by kind people here on the dis.

Ok, not saying people shouldnt post in those threads, i just chose not to. Some people dont have as many friends in vmk as the rest of us, and yes i have been very lucky in that repect. But i think what everyone is getting at is if ALL someone does is post in those threads, or even worse, START one of those threads (mal there were quite a few more started by other people) and that is the only thing you have done here, then i for one had a problem with that.

Hope you didnt think i was directing all of that at you mal, or those 2 threads. ;)

No Mike I didn't and I also know that most who have posted to this thread did not mean them at me either. Most all of the posters to this thread I consider friends as I hope they do me. :goodvibes

And as I stated befor in this post I felt the same way as all of you. I had been thinking of closing the threads for the last week and this just sealed it so to speak.

I started the posts so I feel somewhat responsible for the bad seeds it has produced. I also feel bad that any of the ones who gifted codes and suits felt taken advantage of or used by anyone who posted to those threads.

They seemed to have caused as much anguish as did they did joy so it is just better to let them go and my decision not to start another one stems from this also.

I agree with everything that has been posted before me.
Wehhen I first joined the boards, there was no VMK board. Instead, I hung out on the community board, college board, and the theme park board. I was very excited to when the VMK board was created and now I spend most of my time on it. I've seen how much the begging has gotten worse and it sickens me. I see people's first posts be on "can you give me this or that?" or "I need, I need, I need." It's very sad. The DIS is a wonderful and happy place and I hate to see it take advantage of by the new people who join just to get free things.

i think when they went into the server, they also took out people that have not been on for more than 50 years or so

The begging has only followed over into the VMK Site too! People are horrible NO ONE wants to trade they just want everything that we have. It's crazy.

Anyway.. I would like a pirate couch and a fire wall please..
(lol)

IMHO, this all began during the summer when so many people flocked over from the VMK Fan Site boards. Now, do not get me wrong, I am not against this particular site, but that seemed to be when things started getting out of hand. It has only escalated from there.

That's partially why I 'left'.It was full of I NEED.People were just expecting people to come out of nowhere and say "who wants a free inferno?!"
