DIS FIT 2021 New Hopes, Dreams & Goals, Chit Chat Thread

Well, took kiddo to the pediatrician this afternoon. He was really good (the doctor, kiddo was good too of course). I was glad he had actually read the psych ed evaluation from 2 years ago, and really included Jackson in the conversation. We have our work cut out for us now though. He gave us lots of paperwork and requisitions. We have to get blood work done, and try 3 new supplements. There are reqs for massage and physio, and a prescription for medication which we can decide if we want to try. He gave us exercises for Jackson's feet and posture. Explained a lot of stuff about "monkey" and "human" brain. And said 1 hour of exercise a day, no more than 2 hours of screens outside of education and family time, and 10-15 minutes of meditation (which will be hard, we've tried that before and Jackson gets really upset by it). So there we are... I've ordered the supplements and will get the prescription filled on the weekend. I will call the massage place and physio places tomorrow and see what that's like. And I have a meeting with the psychologist tomorrow morning to set up what we want to work on, which is helpful now that I've talked to the doctor. Any way! Phew... it was good to get the info, and hopefully we are able to move forward with this now.

On the way home we stopped for Taco Bell... they have one out there and Jackson talks about it all the time. It wasn't as good as I remember. But he enjoyed it a lot. We also looked at all the houses, and talked about how I grew up in that area. He goes between being ok to move (when he engages his forebrain that can think rationally) and not wanting to because he thinks he won't make friends in a new area (when he is stuck in the other part of his brain that just reacts). We'll be here a few more months than I had planned, and perhaps over the summer. So we may plant a garden too. We talked about growing some vegetables, he wants to grow potatoes.

Now we wait for spring and hope for nice weather to get out walking/running/biking and see how everything goes.

wow, i am so glad you have such a supportive pediatrician for Jackson!

it sounds like you’ve got things really clearly planned, and i’m not at all an expert. would something like yoga work in place of meditation? like slow yoga, staying in one pose for a couple minutes, then the next, etc?

feel free to ignore if this isn’t helpful. just trying to brainstorm ways to make meditation a bit easier for a kid who wants to move around.

Yoga was an option too, anything "meditative" apparently. He needs to connect and calm his mind apparently. I wish there were in person classes for kids, I have many yoga videos, even one or two kid ones, but he has a hard time following them.

And of note, he broke his phone this evening. To be honest I'm surprised it had lasted as long as it did. It's not fixable. It was in a case and screen and another layer the screen is attached to snapped off. I hope the SIM card will work in a new phone. Any way.

Apparently my parents are sending my birthday money, and some to buy birthday dinner too... so I will be getting myself something totally for me. And dessert with dinner :)

good, you deserve a nice treat!!

as for yoga, i’ve seen some decks of cards where each one has a different pose. you could buy a deck or just print some from the internet? the phone situation sucks...i hope the sim card works too.

Hmmmm I like the Yoga cards idea ., also what if you have to sit and build a house or tower around yourself with a deck of cards.
Now that would calm me for a few minutes.

Mel, what about that link you once sent tthat you use with your students about Calming videos? I can't remember exactly where you posted it.

I can certainly use those somedays. I've hit a bit of a wall in the last two days. Getting outside and shovelling snow helped but I can't wait for this to be over and done. Winter, Covid. Get me in my garden working in the dirt.

I'll have to get kiddo to watch with me, he is the Youtube expert so I'll claim I need help lol.
Winter is blah, I'm over it. Normally by now I'd be looking forward to a trip, and deep in planning mode. Even last year this time I was hoping for some kind of summer trip... Ah well, time to go run around in the snow.

It is freezing outside here right now. I am doing ok with my diet but exercise has fallen by the wayside.
I made a bookmark called CALM and add all the Relax & Calm links under it.

My bank called me today....... it was about my brothers Estate account. One of my brother's beneficiaries is someone I have tried to be kind to but I just don't trust or like her ,,, very shady person.
So who in their right mind holds onto a bank draft for over $10,000.00 since Feb 2018??????
I had to contact her and say uhhhhh cash the damn thing or they will cancel it and then I'll be forced into trying to get a new bank draft (during Covid) and the Estate account is closed ,,,,some people drive me nuts! Stress I just don't need. Sorry I needed that vent.

Gardens.. I have better luck planting in containers as those forest critters dig everything up.
I also am looking forward to digging in the dirt.
Sheridan Nurseries has a outdoor walking area that is very peaceful and beautiful ,,I'm looking forward to walking there.

This is a good place to start for container gardens ,,plus the pictures relax me.

I have a collection of large-ish pots in the garage, my mom gave them to me when they moved. Maybe I will look at filling those with vegetables this year, tomatoes, cucumbers for sure.

I would. I actually use the same pattern for everybody but since I am only making them for 3 people and 1 only wears it sparingly as she doesn't go anywhere I would like to see patterns that people like. I found a pattern for reversible ones so I make different seasons/patterns on each side and yup I wash it before I flip them over. I plan on making some for my nephew to see what ones he likes the best. He has been using a gator at work since he usually works by himself but his company said nope no more and have given the staff masks now so I was going to make him some more. I ordered material from Lens online store and am still waiting and it has been a week already. If I could have found the material at Fabricland or The Quilt Store I would have ordered it from there as they are much quicker. I also found some new Nascar material for me there and I really hope it comes before next week since the racing season starts on Feb 14th.
That would be great! The son likes the masks he received from the school board and province. So I have found that pattern for him. DH has a small head so I have tweaked one pattern to a fit he likes. Myself and other DS like the fit of the disposable ones, so I have found patterns for those, and I put in some floral wire in the nose for a better fit for mine with glasses, so they don't fog up so much.
I feel i need to offer an apology here because it's been several days since i put the offer out to share my patterns and I've yet to follow thru. I haven't forgotten, I've just been misjudging and mishandling the number of spoons I have in my cutlery drawer on any given day. If that's causing anyone's brow to wrinkle in confusion it's an analogy used by people with invisible disabilities that was started by a woman, Christine Miserandino, with lupus. Basically it means I start my day with 15 (set had 16, we lost one so I'm ALWAYS starting the day with one less than I should have!) and everything i do has a cost assigned to it depending on the difficulty (changes depending on my illness as well to be even more complicated!), getting out of bed, making bed, deciding what to wear and actually getting dressed - at 2 spoons, having a shower = 3, I haven't even made it out of my room and I've potentially already used 5 spoons. things like baking bread can take up to 5 or more spoons on their own, if the kitchen isn't clean to begin with (because i ran out of spoons the day before) more like 10 and POOF before I've had my lunch i could possibly be out of spoons for the entire day! NOW let's complicate things, if i don't sleep well I'll start the day with 2 less spoons than normal, depending on the level of depression each activity's need rises exponentially meaning that there are days I need to ask help to pick out socks because I'm done before i leave the room!

WOAH, wordy much Jacqueline?!?! Anywho, here's a few pictures to explain a couple of things regarding how I'm using the polypropylene. I have altered all of my patterns to avoid needing to make pockets for the filters and so i don't need to sew channels for the ties, have extra seams to sew (see above for WHY!). That means I sew the liner in as i make the masks! They are washable, I just use a mesh bag (find the bra container things work better with the fitted masks the 2 of us wear) and chuck in into the washing machine and then hang them to dry because i think the heat from the dryer might be problematic! Pictures are available because I tend to sew in fits & starts right now whenever i have the energy, currently have several liners and outer masks ready to go and several just cut out. This means we both have LOTS which allows for me to not stress about getting laundry done in time.

I PROMISE that I will share the pattern links and hints/tweaks I've developed, just might not happen till Monday at this point :(

I make a sandwich with the liner material & the poly, right sides together, the poly as the bread like this: (who cares what the liner looks like, right? Len's had all Christmas material on for 80% off for about 3 weeks)
554608

I trim the poly close to the seam line since it's rather bulky

Hubby doesn't wear his as often so I sew the nose wire right into his masks before I turn them right-side out

I wear mine more often so they get a channel sewn in so I can replace the wire if it snaps. this picture also lets you see what i use for ties -- tshirt "yarn" soft & stretchy!

Beautiful looking masks. Whenever you share the pattern is okay with me. The pattern that I use has the liner sewn into it as well but up until now I haven't made any with a liner so I will be starting with the new material that is being shipped and should arrive soon. I actually handwash my masks in my bathroom sink with my lovely smelling Bath and Body Works peach bellini soap. Then I hang them to dry like I do my lingeries. Yup I make up my own words.

I am in awe of people that can sew so nicely ! The extent of my talents would be sewing a button back on something when absolutely necessary :rolleyes1.

So I booked some flights to MCO for December 2021 today ! I can change or cancel them one time and I used credit and companion fare for the majority so I’m not out much cash. I can’t tell you how amazingly normal it felt to book those flights, even if just for a few minutes. I will do my best to not get too invested in expecting the trip to happen, it’s just nice to have the potential there for now.

It was so cold and snowy and blowy here today. We took the dogs out for a walk though and they appreciated it. We had homemade pizzas for dinner and now I’m just settling in with my tea. The CBC Gem app has the first two seasons of “Call the Midwife“ and I’ve been really enjoying it !

What are you guys watching these days?

Thanks! Those are just the linings BTW -- those 2 masks actually look like this!
Hubby's with the wire sewn inside the mask - he's a coffee addict

Just need to natter a bit.....
My friend and co worker just lost her mom & dad within 48 of each other. I am at a loss as to how to be there for her.
I notified all staff members and asked them to drop her an email.
The funeral is tomorrow but I can't go as only family is allowed.
I ordered flowers to be delivered to her home for Tuesday ,,,I just feel like I need to physically be there to give her a hug and an ear.
Dang this is hard.
To make matters worse she was transferred to a new school during Covid and really hasn't made any co worker friends yet.. plus everyone is online. AND her principal is about as compassionate as a wet noodle.
Jesus Louise this is so hard.

thanks for letting me natter
