King Cake is kind of like a big pastry with different colored sugar on top (mostly green, gold and purple sugar). There is a little plastic baby hidden in it, and whoever gets the baby...um, something. Maybe that person has good luck? :rotfl2:

Linda - It is on the right, but I think since her cancer is in the milk gland instead of the milk duct that it is probably almost flush against the chest wall. They are trying to avoid lung damage, from what I understand.
Ah, ok. Mine was on the right too, also close to the chest wall. There is more of the lung caught on the right. I can feel it. Sometimes I get a spasm when I laugh or breathe. I have a lot of residual discomfort in the whole area that was irradiated, actually (very common, I guess). It makes it hard to sleep sometimes.

Most king cakes oval shapped braided dough affairs with a glaze and colored glazed sugar in the Mardi Gras colors. . . green, purple, and gold. It is more bread than cake and always seems full of cinnamon to me. They come plain (no filiing) or with many filling combinations, cream cheese, cream cheese with strawberry, lemon, apple, blueberry, pecan, even chocolate cream.

The true french one is more of a flaky pastry and is round.

It is really good.

If you get the pice with the plastic baby in it, mon chere, of course you buy the next king cake.

Everyone eats them after Epiphany right up through Mardi Gras day.

You go on your diet during Lent.

A snowblower, is it a leaf blower on steriods?

I can't picture it.

Just back in from New ORleans. What a long day. We had to thoroughly clean DS20's apartment which was a PITA. We did get to meet his roommate and he was awesome. It took DS20, his roommate, DH and I a full 2 hours to clean the joint, and that did not include the roommate's bedroom or bathroom as those were clean from last semester. Apparently the prior inhabitant to DS20's bedroom and bathroom was raised by pigs or some other farm animals.

OK now I don't think college students should be allowed to be responsible for major appliances.

As the roommate put it, he found the mother lode at the bottom of the fridge. I was too much of a chicken to look at it, I got real busy cleaning something else. I did not want to throw up.

I am too old for this. ARRGGHH!!!!pirate:

DD13 is just going to have to go to LSU and live at home.

Note to self: replenish the bleach and other diminished cleaning supplies.

I know one day I will look back on this day and laugh but it may be a few years.

GAGWTA!!

You're a trouper, Ann. :cold:

It goes something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWaAYUQGttk&feature=related

DH does this in shorts sometimes. He's nuts. :rotfl2:

PS the King Cake sounds really good. :goodvibes:

:goodvibes GAGWTA!!! :goodvibes

Disney was wonderful! :thumbsup2 The crowds over Christmas week were insane :crowded: but we still managed to do everything we wanted to by arriving before opening and using FPs. Never waited more than 15 minutes for anything, so it more than made up for the early morning requirement! The last time we were there was when I was right in the middle of chemo and had to use a scooter, so this trip was my do-over for that one. I sure did appreciate being there, and being on my own two feet! :yay:

Came home and promptly had the flu. DH & I were both sick, but on the mend now. At least it waited until we got home. I'm not surprised we caught it, I couldn't believe how many sick people we heard/saw all week long.

I still have Christmas decoration up in my house  , and a mountain of dirty laundry to catch up on :laundy: , so I'll be tackling that now that I'm feeling better. Haven't even managed to transfer trip pictures to my computer yet.

Some highlights.....the Osborne Lights were awesome - first time I'd seen them. Toy Story Mania is soooo much fun! The chocolate banana creme brulee at Kona - that was OMG good! And the weather was beyond perfect. :wizard:

I have to get caught up here with everybody, just wanted to pop in and say hello, and I hope everybody had a good Christmas & New Years!

GTAGWTA ladies!!

Well today is the day so say a prayer that this is just not more bad news. Of course, much to my dh discontent I have done my online research so I am prepared. I printed out a 2 page thing about the possible tumor I have. I looked up about 3 doctors in the urology department who might be able to take it out and who take our ins. Most of these doctors do "male" stuff. Gheesh, bad enough its a specialist and then they have sub specialties. One guy who I think is the most intresting was at the NIH in Bethesda and his specialty is kidney cancer, He is one of the 3 who take my ins.I told dh I have a strange feeling the endo dr. will say my kidneys or liver are not working right due to these tests etc. I always see the cup half empty unfortunately. I am the kind of person who hopes for the best but gets prepared for the worst. I have always been like that, I dont think it will ever change. I am just hoping this dr. has a good personality and is someone who I will like etc. I think that is half of it.

I might go watch oldest ds coach a basketball game tonight. Depends on what happens.

Lots of prayers or you!!

I am hoping for good news today too, luvmarypoppins. When is the appointment today? I'll be praying.

It sounds like you are as prepared as you can be for today.

Hi Sha!

Linda, that snowblower is serious machinery. I cannot imagine how Ann can control it. Does not look like something a woman should use after breast surgery or especially lymph node removal.

For some reason it was not on the list of banned activities the hospital gave to ME!!

Anyway, any machine that involves a choke mechanism is over my head. I do use the riding lawnmower but that is sissy stuff compared to snow blowers.

Welcome home, Cheryl! I am sorry you ended up getting sick. I have read a bunch of threads about that virus at WDW. Sounds yucky! :scared:

Laurie - Hmm. I would rather have good luck that have to buy the next cake! :rotfl2:

Linda - Wow. I didn't realize the "damage" to the lungs would be reduction of lung capacity in a way that you can actually feel. Hopefully this IMRT will be able to reduce that risk.

LMP - Thinking of you today! :wizard:

:bday:~~~***GAGWTA sistas***~~~:bday:
Popping in for a minute...my oldest Dd is 15 today, wow! You all know how thrilled I am to be here for it!!! :goodvibes Trying to fit in a few things today, it's been a busy weekend!

luvmarypoppins- I am absolutely praying for you today! I consider myself cautiously optimistic, certainly realistic. I agree with you, preparing for the worst, hoping for the best. I had a friend who came to NIH for experimental treatment for BC some years back. I think watching your DS in action would be a good distraction...gotta keep living in the moment.

Elizabeth- I'm so glad to hear your mom's ins. will cover the rads!:thumbsup2

Thinking of you all...:grouphug:

Laura - Happy Birthday to your DD! :cheer2:

DH actually has the Fri & Sat of Super Bowl weekend off! :scared1: I couldn't believe it! I called my boss to ask for that afternoon off, and I booked our room at Great Wolf. I called my cake lady to warn her that we will need DS's cake by the evening of 1/29. I e-mailed the moms of 3 of DS's friends, but there are 2 others I don't have e-mail addresses for. I need to print out some info sheets to go with the invitations (the e-mails were just a heads up). I also need to make a list of the stuff we need to bring, like drinks, snacks, etc.

Laura, happy birthday to your DD!

The birthday party weekend sounds like fun. Happy planning.

My thoughts and prayers are with LMP today. I'm a positive thinker, so I'm counting on good news.

We don't see King's Cakes in the stores here, but I have had them. We always had one at my old church on Epiphany and at my new church at our Mardi Gras celebration dinner. Sadly, never one with yummy fillings. Guess I'll have to make a trip to New Orleans to get that.

I've heard that looking for the "baby" is symbolic of the kings going in search of baby Jesus. I've heard reasons for the oval or ring shape of the cake and the reasons for the symbolic green, purple and gold sugars, but I forget. Yes, finding the baby does make you responsible for hosting the next cake, but it also makes you "king" for a day.

At my old church, they also baked dimes (boiled to sanitize them) into the cake. If you found a dime, you had to find a way to use it in the coming year to the benefit of someone else. You were allowed to add some other seed money to your dime for the project if you wished. Then dime holders had to come back next year and report what they did and how it went. It was always fun to see how people were creative and put the money to good use. I've seen everything from chocolate kisses sold at Valentine's Day to earn money for an animal shelter, to yarn purchased to make baby hats for the poor. It was a fun tradition.

LMP, can you tell us again exactly what type of cancer you have? I think I'm somehow confused. (I thought it was thyroid.) Are you saying you might have a urologic tumor as well? Was anything seen on a scan or are you concerned because of the 24hr urine? Sorry if I missed something.

:surfweb: ~~~***GAGWTA sistas***~~~:surfweb:

Linda- luvmarypoppins didn't say specifically, but I thought the same thing.

luvmarypoppins- Still holding you up in prayer...

Elizabeth- That's awesome how things worked out! Sounds like a fun weekend! We had an (indoor!!!:cold: ) pool party for dd when she was in 5th grade. The kids had taken lessons there. It was such a novelty to swim in Jan. and the pool did a great job, so the party was a real hit. I just brought the cake, there is a pizza place in the same shopping center and they were totally supervised in the pool so an easy party for mom! Great Wolf Lodge looks like such a cool place, I'm sure the boys will have a blast!:thumbsup2

Cheryl- Your trip sounds magical! I loved Toy Story too, it's my new favorite, so fun! Sorry you got sick when you came home. Disney should have antibacterial hand wash stations around the parks, like at hospitals.

Melissa- Congrats to your hubby! Neat to read the Epiphany traditions. The dime one especially, reminds me of the parable of the talents.

Ann- Thinking of you as you go for your mamm. today. Looking forward to good news to carry you through 2009!

Laurie- What an awful thing to happen at your son's work! How is his coworker doing? I think you are right to be concerned for his safety there. Hopefully there will be some investigating. My dd came home from school yesterday and said that Friday after school one student accidentally hit another student (a senior) and he later died. Horrible situation all around.
The dorm fridge...ugh! :faint: I am seriously steering my oldest dd in the direction of staying home and commuting to college...we'll see. Her PSAT scores should be in, but they haven't passed them out yet, so I can't look it up. I noticed a thread on the CB about kids getting mail from colleges right after they took the PSATs. We must have opted out for mailings because she's gotten nothing.
So when do you leave for WDW???

I cancelled the DCL trip. As much as I would love to, and it was a terrific deal, we sat down and crunched the numbers and with doing the kitchen too, it would be too much once we added in all the additional costs involved. We are going to WDW (surprised?:lmao: ) for Forth of July. Anyone else wanna join me in the crowds:crowded: and the heat? :stir::woohoo:

:grouphug:

The injured worker did NOT make it sadly.

DS did not talk about it much Sunday, although I asked him if he was still thinking about it. I think he is mostly left with sadness, as he did not know the guy who worked for another contractor working on the same floor of a big job.

I think I do remember the mailings starting after the PSAT's, Laura.

Sorry you had to change your mind on the cruise. Maybe another year? July fourth woud be fun, but we are goin in May so I don't think it would work.

But never say never.

Good luck, Ann, and check in with us later.

Luvmarypoppins did not post last night. I hope we hear from her soon. Worrying about you, dear.

It is so very quiet at home with only one in the nest. We do have to go back down next weekend though as DS's car had a problem closing the driver side door which DH took all apart. It now closes but the side panel, etc needs to all be put together again.

DH and I are thinking of having some business cards printed. I wanted to put Accounting, mobile car repair and gas station (don't ask), and speedy apartment cleaning service.

DH wanted to put Accounting. . . only.

Short and sweet, eh?

How about Retired at Last? Or simply Tired at Last?

GAGWTA!

Hubby and I were on the phone this morning and he said he saw some strange charges on his credit card from Nov 8-11....6 of them for a total of $500! All in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area, which we have never traveled to! When we went to WDW in Nov. (14 & 15) he tried to use his credit card at the ATM in the lobby of the Beach Club and was denied. He called and they said they were being cautious of unusual charges (which are obvious to us now!) So I used my card instead. The charges started before we arrived at Disney, so I'm not sure where they got his numbers, as his card was not physically stolen. I think he was a victim of skimming. Typically it can happen at a restaurant, ATM or gas pump. Whoever got his number enjoyed some meals out at 3 restaurants and groceries from Publix on us...grrr.

Laurie- I'm sorry to hear the man didn't make it. Even though your son didn't know him, the impact of it will surely stay with him.
Have you convinced your hubby to come along on your trip yet? I'm sure he needs it!

No luck with DH. Neither with mom but I can't seem to get her to be interested in a trip anywhere.

Maybe when it is warmer.

I am starting to wonder about this trip but airfare is booked (even got a ding fare on the ride over).

At least DD13 is enthused.

Trying to decide whether to rent a car at CB. I have one reserved because we want to go to Downtown Disney.

I have done WDW without a car before but I have a ? mark in my head because of the sheer size of CB.

Laurie- Are the rentals high right now? How long are you staying? Will you be hopping around a lot?
Maybe you don't need a car for the whole trip. If not, I would consider 2 options...not renting at all and taking a cab to DTD or renting on the last 24hrs from the Dolphin or CCC at MK and going to DTD then driving yourself to the airport.
I haven't stayed at CBR, but I have stayed at CSR a few times. I think it's set up the same way, different stops within the resort. We didn't have any trouble using the buses at CSR, in fact they were some of the better ones.

GTAGWTA Ladies, O.K. Can I just say that I am SHOUTING IT FROM THE MOUNTAINTOP, o.K. actually from my tiny 30 yo ranch with no basement:cheer2: :cheer2:  :cheer2: GOD ANSWERS PRAYERS!!!!!

Thank you all so much for your prayers, thoughts and concern. It is truly a blessings to me during this time. Finally, yest. we got some GOOD news from the endocronologist, can I just say, I Loved her, not compassionate as none of them are there, I think they are all trained to be like that, but very thorough and knowledgeable.

So since she was the once who told the surgeon to cancel the surgery she said:
The cat scan was 90% negative for the adrenal tumor. However, since they are assuming I have a certain thyroid cancer, which they think again is meduallary which occurs in only 4 in 100 patients. The surgeon only sees 1-3 a year if that. They assume that 10% the tumor could be hiding somewhere else in my body, so they have to pump me full of a certain rare, expensive, can you say $800 BP med before surgery. Due to some creative ordering I am only paying $25 co pay. We had to get it from a special pharmacy place that deals with hospitals etc, I guess we should thank them profusely.
2. She said the biopsy didnt have enough cells for a proper diagnosis, Hmm, the surgeon didnt say that, he only said it didnt show the cancer type etc.
3. She has ruled out 2 genetic presentations of the disease, which is a huge burden lifted off of us, worrying about the ds. I forgot what the other 2 were, 1 is spontaneous which I hope I have as it has a better survival rate. but questioning since it has spread to the lymph nodes
4. Had a blood test yest. and the lovely repeat of the 24 hour urine today. The blood test is the best indicator of this type of cancer. Hmm, she said I didnt have it and I thought my pcp said it was negative, maybe he meant the biopsy. They are looking for calcitonin in that one. The urine might have been abnormal due to me taking tylenol, so no tylenol today, Can I just say the pain is reallly, really bad today, running around my jaw etc. So after 8:10 tomm. I am loading up on the tylenol. They said this bp med has no side effects to we will see.
5. The lab tests are being done stat this time so I am sure she will get after quest if they are not. If the tests are normal she will tell the surgeon to put me back on the surgery schedule and she will see me in the hospital too.
6. Even if the tests are not normal, then its most likely that form of cancer and maybe a tumor too,
And so goes your cancer lesson of the day:)

Laura, I am glad you got to enjoy your dd's b day, bet she is a realprincess:
I watched my ds game, they lost by 3, and of course he whispered to me about how things went etc.

I do read all your posts, sorry I dont post about each one individually all the time, but you ladies are the BEST!! Thank you all for adopting me!!

I know I still have a long, long road ahead. I read some of you are going to disney and as much as we go twice a year, I just cant see that happening for a while, between the radiation, drs. visits, pet scan etc. I think I have a new life besides disney, I will put something in the back of my mind for Dec. like we always do, its nice to keep those thoughts around too!!

Again, thank you all for your prayers and keep on praying. Its a real blessing to me as all of you are.
