I just called to try to get the AAA discount. Apparently that is only for NEW customers.....although I was never told about it, but according to the woman I spoke to, tough luck!

I then asked about any discounts available and was told they could discount my account $5 for a total of 3 months.....whoopie!

Then she tried to lower my package. I don't want that either. She got kind of snotty so I hung up.

Several of you have commented that you have received discounts by calling. At this time I can't cancel because I have 11 months left on my contract.

What else can I say to get a discount?

Thanks,

Dawn

Are you currently locked into a contract (i.e. - you have a 2-year agreement for service)? If not, call and ask for their customer retention department. Tell them you're considering a switch to Dish Network or cable TV. Retention should be able to come up with a few deals to keep you at DTV.

When you're in a contract it's much harder to get a discount because they know they've got you. Since you'll have to pay a big cancellation fee, they know that you're not likely to leave. Deals usually go to those with the power to say, "Stick it," and leave. However, if you were really willing to cancel (paying the fee and all), you might still be able to get a deal but it's much harder to play the bluffing game when they know you'll have to come up with that big payment. Even if a competitor offered lower rates, Dtv knows that the lower rate isn't likely enough to offset that big cancellation fee. Unfortunately, I think you're kind of stuck until your contract runs out. But then you'll have the power on your side.

you're probably outta luck, being only 1/2 way through your contract.

The AAA is only for a new customer and can't be added on after the fact (and is also only good for the 1st 2 years).

If you know anyone signing up, you can do the refer-a-friend, which I believes gets both of you $100. Other than that, you're probably at the mercy of waiting until next year and asking if you can get anything to stay with them once you are out of contract.

when Fios came to my area they offered to pay all of my cancelation fees. Maybe you cuold call and mention that? it is a risk as then you may have to cancel after all.

I wish we had Fios. My options are Directv and cable.

I did get to someone who has offered to give me a $10/off per month for 12 months deal (basically free HD I think is what she said.)

It took 3 phone calls.

At that point, our contract will be up and we will make more threats to leave and see what we get. ;)

Thanks,

Dawn
