I'm usually one of the ones who loves Ohana! We go every year and it is usually one of our favorite meals! This year....not so much! Something has changed. The meat was very dry and either overcooked (or in one case, very undercooked). The potatoes are gone (replaced by lo mein type noodles...which sounded like a good idea, but were very greasy). The dumplings were good...but also a bit greasy. The sauces were still great as was the salad and the dessert. We liked the broccoli/pea pods. However, the service was very slow, the waitress was a bit rude, and the chef was clueless. My mother is diabetic, so we asked for a sugar-free dessert at the beginning of the meal (which we had been told to do). The waitress insisted on sending the chef over before she would serve us anything. My mother said that she didn't need to see the chef, but the the waitress told her she had to for her own safety. My mom said "I don't need to see the chef, I am really able to determine what is safe for me to eat.". The waitress insisted and kept making a big deal about it, to the point that I finally got up and went and found her and told her to cool it. The chef finally arrived 15 minutes later and just stood there. We looked at him, he looked at us and said nothing. Finally I said, "Can we help you?" and he said "You requested to talk to the chef?" "No", we said. We really don't need to talk to you..we just wanted a sugar-free dessert. "Ok, then just tell your server" he said, and turned around and left.

...and with the DDP and 6 people, we had the pleasure of leaving an 18% tip for this nonsense!

I know that they have to be careful with special diets and allergies, but that was over the top. She offered to send over the chef, not needed, move on. But for the server to keep pressing the issue, :sad2:

Sorry it impacted your experience (I know it would have mine)

So, did you get the sugar free dessert? :lmao:

Sorry your server was like that. She really should have listened to what you were saying instead of what she did.

Everyone has made so nervous about our ADRs at O'Hana. We went last year for the first time and loved it. Of course the things we liked the best were the shrimp, salad, potatoes, and dessert. It turned out to be one of our guests favorite place. Now we are ready mostly neg reports and I'm not sure we should chance it again. That happened to us once at Spoodles where we had the best meal and couldn't wait to try it again the next year and they had changed the menu so much we just did not enjoy it like before. We have added it this year so we hope we like it again. We always have a good time whenever we go regardless if we don't like the changes but with O'hana you don't have a menu that you can choose different items if your not sure.

We did get the sugar free dessert....a strawberry mousse of some sort which she enjoyed. Also, the grilled shrimp were very good....they were peel and eat, but so were the old ones and these weren't so messy to eat without the sauce (you could add a sauce after peeling).

Also, the wings are gone (I think this has been posted many times). We had ordered the sticky wings at Kona a few days before, so we did get our fill of wings.

Will we never go back? No...we'll go back some day, but I think we'll skip it next year. Too bad....it really was one of our favorites!

We are going for the first time in 9 days...we cannot wait, the menu sounds awesome. The only thing that I am hoping for is to order the noodles without the pineapple and sweet flavoring but if not I will try it anyways and add a lot of soy sauce!

Oh and PLEASE have the bread pudding when I go...I am dying to try it and see what the hype is about.

OK, not only the waitress was rude, but couldn't the chef have handled that a little better? Maybe he was a little upset at the waitress too, but don't take your rudeness out on the customer.

well, I have O'hanas down if we go in August, but I'm going to be a little nervous, that's for sure.

I was thinking about trying it again this trip (we took a two year hiatus because the meat seemed dry and tastless on our last couple of times), but my absolute favorite part of this meal was the wings. Oh well. Dilemma solved- I don't have to try to squeeze it in. We'll eat at Kona's instead.

Your server sounded awful. I hope I don't have her when I eat there.

I don't think the server was awful from what I read. I don't see anything wrong with her trying to get the chef to come over to a table to talk to a customer. What is so rude about that? :confused3 We had the same thing happen to us at Mama Melrose last year when we told our server that our son was allergic to nuts. I actually thought it was very nice.

When did the wings get taken off the menu? I had not read this one. Did they replace it with anything else. Why do they do this so many times. Reading the posts it seems that they have changed O'hana's menu many times. I have only been there once and we really enjoyed it. We are still going to try again this year and we hope we won't be disappointed.

Maybe the wings are not gone, maybe it was just that thew waitress didnt bring them out?:confused3

Loved 'Ohana the first time we went. The last time (last fall) - not so much. Dry meat and the new menu stuff didn't thrill me, but our server was good.

DisFlan

Did you talk to a manager and request that the tip be reduced or removed due to poor service? I'm just curious because that's what I would have done and I'd like to know how those requests are being received.

Thanks
Shelly

I'm sorry you had such an unpleasant experience. I've said it again and again, why should you be forced to pay an 18% tip, when the service doesn't warrant it? We also have a large party.

Maybe i'm just a little too laid back, but doesn't it seem like you're making a mountain out of a molehill? I mean seriously, you're complaining about having to leave an 18% tip for a girl who sent the chef out to clarify your specifications. And that is the justification you give for her service being "nonsense". Even if she insisted on doing it after you said it wasn't necessary, wasn't it more of a hassle to argue with her about it than to just say "ok, thanks for your concern"? You could have saved yourself the hassle, stress and high blood pressure by just saying "ok". Choice would be easy for me...lol

As for the food being subpar, I would take that up with the management and the restaraunt. The waitress has no say in how quick the food comes out or whether the potatoes and meat are dry. Most times if they mention something to the cooks, their heads are bit off.

I am not only a waitress who has to deal with food allergies, but also a medical assistant who knows plenty about health liability, so no, i'm not just spouting off...lol I know I cringe when I have to bring out food knowing it doesn't look how it should.

Not to mention, like she said to you, that's not only in your best interests, but also covers you and them in case the chef makes a mistake after being informed OR if you do not clarify and end up in a medical emergency.

And 18 % is a minimum that they charge for standard service, any service that excells in that aspect should be tipped additionally. You base service on the waitresses behavior, NOT the quality of food and how quickly the cooks make it.

And 18 % is a minimum that they charge for standard service, any service that excells in that aspect should be tipped additionally. .

You had me until this sentence. I absolutely and completely disagree. 18% is a number that Disney has come up with; it is NOT a baseline for standard service. That make it sound like as long as my waitress tries to serve well they should receive 18% and any efforts above baseline should be tipped more. That's my whole problem with this auto gratuity. I tip well. I usually tip over 20%. But I tip because I WANT to. To have Disney or a waitress like yourself suggest that I should pay 18% and THEN start tipping "because I want to" is insulting and makes me think that waitresses are selfish and don't appreciate the tips I leave. It makes me not want to tip AT ALL. A tip is given for good service (and I'll happily conceed that the service should be judged on only what the wait person has control over) and should be earned not expected.
