Hi all!

Some quick reviews from our recent WDW trip. This was our first trip in many years without the DDP, Summertime and heat usually means we don‘t eat as much. (A breakdown of that thought can be found here http://disboards.com/showthread.php?p=32283298#post32283298 )

This trip was a much needed rest for us, and our theme was THE LAZY RIVER! We managed to be at the water parks every day, and this time (gasp!) the food was secondary. Having said that, you all may remember we love to eat, so in spite of the heat, or maybe because of it, here is what we did!

Sanaa-

We will be staying at AKL in Sept for free dining, so wanted to preview this. We had POFQ call for ADR’s at checkin at 2 pm, and were being seated in the dining room before 5:15. This is a BEAUTIFUL restaurant. I loved it on sight, and the staff was helpful and friendly. Since no DDP this time, we started with the App. Bread Service. We Selected the Naan, Roti, and Paneer Paratha, and chose the Mint and Onion Raita, Mango Chutney, and Garlic-Ginger Pickle (although I think it had more peppers in it) The Mango Chutney was far and away my favorite, with the mint and onion raita providing a cooling break for the garlic ginger pepper stuff, which was hot, but delicious. The breads are all flat breads, and very tasty. I was a little disappointed to learn that the Mango Chutney was not prepared on site, so no recipe.

We also shared the Mustard Crusted Scallops with Coconut cream sauce. The sauce was VERY good, used some of the flatbreads to wipe the plate after the scallops were gone.

DH had the Tandoori Lamb Chops with 5 grain pilaf, and some sort of sauce, We were surprised that the meat was in small pieces, but it was so tender and so well cooked, that even a dipping person like me found them wonderful even without the sauce.

I chose the Slow cooked Chicken with Red Curry, and the Shrimp with green curry, and the basmati rice. Everything was excellent, but people, the real star here was the rice. Perfectly, wait…PERFECTLY cooked! Could have just eaten the bowl of plain rice and been very happy! It was excellent with the currys, and we each had enough left to take back to our room. To full for dessert, and knew there would be a Mickey Bar calling my name later that evening.

We walked out to the viewing area after eating, this is really COOL!!!

Foulton’s Crab Shack-

Again, tried to do something that we don’t do on DDP. We had eaten here at Christmas time in 2005, so thought to give it another go. We were seated upstairs, not a lot of people in the dining room (2 pm). The Waitress brought the bread, and also a flatbread cracker with a crab cream cheese boursin, and we were provided the recipe for this. We also ordered the Lobster Bisque. (I had hoped for Coral Reef’s, but was unable to get in this trip) The lobster bisque at Foulton’s is heavier, darker and has a stronger “rouge” flavor. It was good, but not quite what I was hoping for.

DH ordered the Fried Seafood Combination - scallops, shrimp and cod served with tartar and cocktail sauces, and a fried onion loaf. Really good, and plenty to take back to the room.

I had once again intended to get the Mahi fish tacos, but the special was the Wahoo with Mango salsa. You guessed it, no fish tacos once again. The Wahoo was well cooked, this is a firm fish, the salsa was good, not too sweet, and it was served with green beans cooked with red peppers, which was excellent. I never seem to get enough veggies on vacation, so this was a welcome addition. We also got a 20% discount with the AP, so lunch is definitely the time to go!

We chose to forego dessert with the promise of a dole whip swirl in the offing later in the evening. Love the View from this Restaurant!

Brown Derby-
Our last TS was Brown Derby. This was a great surprise, as I had intended to go to Starring Rolls to see if they had the Cobb salad that day. We were hot, just coming from the 1:30 show of LMA, and headed that way, and there was no one standing outside of HBD. DH said, “lets check” I laughed and said go ahead. The girl at the desk said “Of Course we can seat you now!” Yay!
So we went in, ordered the Coconut shrimp appetizer (2 shrimp, $10, and the sauce was worth every penny!) and then we split the FABULOUS Cobb salad. Our waiter tossed it for us, served us in individual plates, there was enough for 2nd’s and we were full. Could definitely have done without the appetizer, but the restaurant is so pleasant, love the old Hollywood characatures on the wall, the embiance, etc. Cool, air conditioned, What’s not to like? Only $25, would have been $15 with out app. Cheap as CS!

Our CS were all good,

Typhoon Tilly’s -No longer has the Ribs, even as a special, Cast member confirmed this on our last day of daily checking. We did however split the terrific pork sandwich. Wanted to get another of these but ran out of time.

Starring Rolls-A traditional Breakfast favorite for us. I had a Chocolate Croissant, and DH had a Cinnamon Roll the size of Texas.

Sunshine Seasons- We split the Asian Combo Platter, Mongolian Beef, Hot and Spicy Chicken, Noodles, and vegetables. A great value! We got a piece of Butterfinger Cheesecake, not too sweet, very yummy!

Main Street Bakery- Breakfast on the fly, a huge blueberry muffin, breakfast croissant, and milk.

El Pirata y el Perico-My Absolute favorite for Taco Salad. We always split this, plenty on the fixin ‘s bar to make it a super summertime meal. Even open seasonally, this place has short hours, but if you miss it, the Taco salad inside at Peco’s Bills is the same.

Campfire at Campgrounds- Worth a mention. Everyone does the s’mores. Of course we had to be different. Got a pan of Jiffypop, and DH attached a stick to the handle and shook it over the fire til it was done. Know there were lots of kids that had never seen jiffy pop, and lots of adults that were watching to see if it worked!

POFQ- Late nite after the campfire, we got a jambalya. It was really REALLY good! We chose this nite to polish off the leftovers from Sanaa, which we heated in the food court microwave; rice went really well with the Jambalya.

Cap’n Cook’s Snack Company (Poly)- Breakfast- Found out a couple of trips ago that you can get the Tonga Toast here. We ordered it with bacon, got another side of bacon (sorry, I like bacon) and split it. Great as usual!

Mini Donuts @ Typhoon Lagoon- This was our last meal on the way out. We managed one last dip in the Lazy River Saturaday morning, and I had always wanted to try the mini donuts. We got a dozen, fresh and hot and put in a paper bag. Also got the dipping sauces. These were really worth the wait. Ever since I was a kid and read Homer Price, I wanted mini fried donuts. These were soooo good. Great hot and warm, but even the next day on the drive back the flavor was good and tasted fresh!

Just FYI, the trip also included 3 mickey bars, and 3 dole whip swirls!!!:goodvibes

Had a great time, will add a few pics later if you want! September free dining, here we come!!!

Don't you just love Hollywood Brown Derby? Whenever we've been there it's been such a nice break from the park chaos. Great reviews! Thanks for sharing :woohoo:

Hollywood Brown Derby Cobb is awesome!!! Had been told you could get a CS version at Starring rolls, but splitting the full one at HBD, couldn't have hardly been cheaper, and the Restaurant is beautiful! Air conditioning was a super huge plus as well!

Tonga Toast at the Poly as a CS, good suggestion.
May have to give the Brown Derby a try OOP.
