Dining reviews, while fresh in my head

Trip dates were 5/5 - 5/11

Had the dining plan. Most counter service credits were used towards breakfast.

Most breakfasts were at our hotel (Contemporary) in the Food 'n Fun Center. Not bad. I always got the Breakfast Platter (scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, hash browns, and muffin). Kids usually had pancakes or french toast sticks when they were available as a special that day. My wife had eggs or pancakes, except when they had hot oatmeal for the special.

One day we had counter service breakfast at Tusker House in AK, which was good.

When we had breakfast using the counter service credits, we also got a danish or muffin, and we were too stuffed to eat them at breakfast, so we saved them for snacks in the afternoon or at night.

Sit downs:

5/6 - Lunch at 2:30 at Cinderella's Royal Table. I had the Apricot Barbeque Chicken. I am not a big fan of barbeque chicken, but this was very good. It came with veggie cole slaw and a piece of apple walnut cake and these were good too. Recommended. Intead of a main course, my wife had two appetizers (spring roll and a salad) and both were good.

5/7 - Dinner at Mama Melrose's in MGM. This was a last minute choice - I realized I made PS's for Jiko and California Grill, two signature restaurants and would run out of credits. Reluctantly canceled Jiko because of dress code - not enough time to change and get there. Mama's was decent. I had the Veal Osso Buco, which I would rate as mediocre. (I am from an Italian family, and I am not easily impressed by Italian restaurants...)

5/8 - Brunch at Chef Mickey's for Mother's Day at 12 PM (couldn't get an earlier PS). We arrived at 11:55 to check in. They took a family photo (which they sold to you for $27 if you wanted it), then we had to wait about 15 - 20 minutes to get seated. There was a BIG line of people waiting to be seated. Either they overbooked that time, or people seated earlier were taking too long. After we got seated, the brunch buffet was very good and the kids liked the characters at the meal.

Dinner at Sci-Fi in MGM. The atmosphere was nice, and the kids liked sitting in the cars, but we weren't impressed by the food. I had the catfish, and it was very dry. No one else in our party had much good to say about their meal, but it could have been that we were still stuffed from brunch.

5/9 - Dinner at Le Cellier. Easily the best meal we had. I had the Le Cellier Filet Mignon. The filet was good and the risotto it came with was awesome. My wife had the 7 oz. filet, and she loved the mashed potatoes. There was a surf & turf special that night (lobster & steak) and when someone at the table next to us got it, I was immediately very envious even though my choice was very good. The lobster was bigger than I thought it would be....

5/10 - Dinner at California Grill. This was good and the atmosphere was nice, but probably not worth two dining credits. The wine list was fairly extensive. I had a foie gras appetizer (which I never had before) and my wife had a goat cheese ravioli appetizer. I had a seafood dish (mussels, scallops, calamari in a light tomato stew - I can't recall the name of the dish) and my wife had a filet (she is not adventurous when it comes to food). For desert, we both had crepes stuffed with apples and cinamon ice cream on the side.

All in all, it was good. I liked the unusual choices available on the menu. I was tempted to get some sushi or sashimi for my appetizer.

One note about the California Grill menu - I have seen a few different menus online and the main courses on the menu that night were nothing like any of the menus we saw online. The only choice I recognized was the "Free range chicken". This was somewhat disappointing because I saw something on one of the online menus that I was looking forward to ordering. Apparently the chef changes the menu often (it was a single sheet of paper), so don't count on anything being on the menu beforehand.

Another note about CG. You can watch the MK fireworks from their observation deck, and the music is piped in. We didn't do this because we were staying in the Contemporary and could watch the fireworks from our room. When we were being seated, the hostess told us that since we were eating there that night, even though we would be finished before the fireworks started we were welcome to come back later that night to watch them. That's good to know if you want or can only get an early PS, but want to hang around to watch the fireworks.

You can take the kids down to the arcade on the first floor, or hang out at the bar on the 4th floor (Outer Rim Cocktail Lounge) until the fireworks are ready to start.

Great reviews! :flower: I just made a PS at Jiko for 8/4, could you tell me what the dress code is. I hope it's nothing fancier than resort casual.

Actually--there is no dress code at JIko other than no tank tops on men and no swimsuits. Most unfortunate that you were made to feel you must dress "up". You missed a splendid evening due to some bad advice. The RECOMMENDED dress is resort casual--but it is not enforced and you'll see shorts and T's at Jiko all the time. I fear this sort of thing happening to others--.
And a good reason NOT to have strict dress codes. WDW is a place where folks are always on the move from one spot to another and often (as in Judicial's case) there is no time to get back to your room and then be forced to dress up just so they'll let you in for dinner.

Thanks for the reviews....
one main reason the CG menu is not the same as the ones posted on the net is because they use the freshest meat/seafood/food possible. We have been many times and while I love their tuna dish - I have only seen it on there twice.

Totally agree with LeCellier...one of our favorites. And also Sci-Fi...I always tell people it's fun to experience, but go for lunch and stick with burgers, fries and shakes!

When I made the PS for Jiko, they specifically told me that dress was "business casual", the same thing they told me for California Grill.

That is too bad, because I think I would have liked Jiko more.

I had the catfish at Sci Fi last week, too, and was completely underwhelmed, though DH's pasta dish was yummy. Nice to see someone else thought it could have been better!

Nice reviews, thanks!

Judicial:
Therin lies the problem. Folks aren't told that "business casual" is not an enforced dress code, but merely a way they'd prefer you to dress. But it's by no means a requirement--at least not yet!!
We've been to JIko and CG any # of times in theme park casual and never ever been any sort of a problem.

I had a feeling dress wasn't that important. I saw a lot of people in business casual at CG when we were there. There was a guy checking in at the desk in shorts (but certainly not "sloppy" shorts) and I heard him saying that he felt a little out of place, but the staff didn't seem to care.

(There were also members of a wedding party checking in, and I could tell one of the women was a bridesmaid - she was barefoot, carrying her shoes, and her dress was practically see-through. But that's another story. Let's just say she was wearing a green string thong, and everyone knew it.... ;) ... not that I am complaining - the view wasn't bad.)

We'll definitely hit Jiko the next time we are there - but that won't be for a few years, since child #4 is due in Sept.
