Dining Reviews May 14-22-A mix of DXDP and OOP picked by a six year old-Complete6/7

Great reviews! I love your DD's picture with Belle - so adorable!

Too bad about the service at Mama Melrose and the not so spectatular food. That canoli cake looks delicious though! I just have to say that your meal at Captain’s Grill looks amazing! I would love to try the grilled rib-eye along with the cheesecake. Yummm!

Today was our last character breakfast.
We had an adr at Cape May at 7:40.

Everything was very good. I loved having the asparagus on the buffet.
The characters were Minnie, Donald and Goofy. They were dressed in their beach wear.

Before we headed to CMC DH had whined “another character breakfast???” He ended up really liking this one. The food is good and Cape May is much more relaxed than some of the others. The characters all made it to our table twice while we were eating.

Wow...that was an impressive string of reviews. You made me feel better about not being able to get an ADR at MM next month. Captain's Grille was great...noted. We have a breakfast ADR there, and I'm thinking this could be a good backup for dinner, too. And I can't even really comment on Cape May...glad you liked it. I will say that it felt more relaxed than the character meals we did in the parks. I was too busy meeting Nicki and Karin to notice much about what I ate! :lmao:

After some time in SAB, DD and I were hungry. We were planning on going to Tony’s at 7:25 so we picked up some flat breads OOP.

I had a bbq chicken one and DD had cheese.

They were okay. I didn’t love the options at BC marketplace and probably should have walked over to Hurricane Hannah’s but I always forgot about that place when we were hungry. I think it was $13 or so.

We had an adr at Tony’s but we were all hot and tired. We decided to just walk over to Captain’s Grill and try our luck walking in. I had noticed a few 6:50 adr times earlier when I checked and it was about 7pm when we decided to head over. We walked past Beaches and Cream and decided to ask how long the wait was. No wait, come on in.

Okay then.

DH had a burger and fries.
DisneyoncanonMay2011359.jpg

I had the roast beef sub.

DisneyoncanonMay2011360.jpg

DD had a burger.

DisneyoncanonMay2011358.jpg

The food wasn’t as great as I expected. The fries were a bit overcooked .My sandwich was good but hard to eat.

I was wishing we had just kept walking to Captain’s Grill.

DisneyoncanonMay2011372.jpg

My dessert. No way Jose- Awesome! You can’t beat ice cream with pb and choc. You can see the lemonade I had in the picture. I was very happy that they had regular lemonade instead of that light lemonade stuff they have everywhere else.

DisneyoncanonMay2011356.jpg

DH saw someone ordered this and had to have it, He love orange sherbet but wasn’t a big fan of this. He didn't drink much.

DisneyoncanonMay2011371.jpg

DD had vanilla ice cream that she decided to drink with a straw.

I don’t have a picture of the reciept but it was more than I expected since I always hear how cheap it is to eat here.

We paid for DD OOP since she had used a CS credit for her hot dog the day before. It was about $7 which was cheaper than paying for her meal yesterday.

It was somewhere around $40 b/c I remember than the waitress had an issue getting our dxdp to work. I was ready to hand over $40 in cash.
So about $40 or 2 dxdp credits.

Overall I don’t get the hype over this place. It was nice while at BC but I wouldn’t make a special trip over there when staying elsewhere. The best part was the desserts and I think the gold rush at Ghiradelli was pretty much the same as the No Way Jose. It is a very cute place and Caitlin seemed to like it.

I still wish we had gone to Tony’s for our last meal or at least Captain’s Grill. If we ever return it will just be for the ice cream. I have heard the burgers are the same at Hurricane Hannah’s so we would just eat there first.

Our yummy dxdp days are over. We had 12 snack credits that we used somewhere. DD liked to waste them on bags of Doritos and I remember some iced beverages along the way.

We woke up on our last morning and had time for one more Disney breakfast. I had thought about making an ADR for Captain’s Grill or Kouzinna but I figured we would have no problem getting there. DH wanted some eggs. I told him either Captain’s Grill or walking over to the Dolphin were his best choices since he didn’t want to go across to Boardwalk. He decided he would check out BC marketplace and if they didn’t have anything we could go to Captain’s Grill. He didn’t love the options but DD found a lovely box of Entenmanns’s powered donuts that were calling her name.

We walked out. We were on our way to Captain’s Grill. Then I asked DH if he knew it was his turn to pay for breakfast since we weren’t on the dxdp anymore. He turned right back around and headed to the marketplace. Caitlin got her donuts and DH got the omelet in a croissant. I didn’t like any of the options there so I got the same as DH. It was under $20.

I didn’t like it but I don’t really like plain crossaints. I should have just paid for Captain’s Grill, but I always make DH pay for anything over the dxdp since I pay for the dxdp for our trips. I do this b/c I love to eat out and DH doesn’t. If he had it his way we would eat offsite at Sonics or head to Pop each meal.
I remembered the lemon poppy muffin things from Captain’s Grill and ate those with my coffee.

I was several reviews behind somehow.

I'm sorry Boma was a disappointment for you this trip; it is one of our favorites and we'll eat there our second morning at AKL. Mark has no interest in T-Rex (we don't like RFC and he thinks they are too similar, but your food looks pretty darn good. We ate lunch at Akershus three years ago and did not care for it; I would be willing to try breakfast but I really don't need to eat with the Princesses. We LOVE Cape May Cafe. You hit it right on the head...it is much more subuded than the other character breakfasts. I am so happy with your Captain's Grille review as you know we've added this for our dinner before MNSSHP...and now I can't wait.

Whew… all done.

How did the dxdp work out this time?
Our grand total for our meals was about $520. That includes all meals, snacks and mugs. We spent about $40 OOP which was much cheaper than adding any dining plan to our last night. We paid 360 for the 2 nights of dxdp.

Overall I enjoyed our days on the dxdp, but I loved the OOP too. The dxdp was great for those expensive meals and since DH is cheap he loves not having to worry about the bill at TS. We are probably going to try OOP next trip and see how that goes. DD will be over her need to do character meals so we aren’t going to do many TS meals next time. It was fun doing all the character meals one last time. We didn’t save a lot but did manage to save a bit. I would have probably swapped Boma out for a lunch somewhere and just used snack credits for breakfast to avoid any OOP costs.

I really enjoy character meals. They are a great start to your Disney day. We usually do them early so they don’t interfere with park time.
My favorites are Tuskerhouse and Crystal Palace. Followed closely by Akershus and Cape May. ‘Ohana isn’t too far behind but Chef Mickey is a distant last.

DH likes 'Ohana and Cape May the best for breakfast. I am guessing b/c they are the most relaxed.

DD likes anyplace that has pancakes or Mickey waffles.

We have only done CRT, CM and CP for dinner. I would rank them CP, CRT, CM

Our favorite dinner this trip was Captain’s Grill but we didn’t have many good dinner choices picked so it isn’t fair to compare CG and Sci-fi.
I worry a little about how DH will handle paying OOP next trip b/c you can see how much he loves to fork over his money on food. I will probably get some Disney gift cards to use so I don’t have to see his veins pop out of his forehead at each meal where DD ate a mickey waffle for $90.

The nice part of paying OOP is that is a bit more flexible. Also in case you haven't noticed DH tends to order the cheapest thing on the menu. He is not a good person to get value out of the dxdp.

DH did a great job not canceling many adr's but he really dislikes eating out and can't wait to have a trip of relaxation. Our next trip will be no scheduled park days and maybe 1 o 2 adrs. Should be interesting

I'm glad I could help direct to TH's delicious bread pudding. An amazing treat at breakfast. And I'm so looking forward to not worrying about credits and being able to, as you put, do whatever whenever! :thumbsup2

I am not sure if I ever mentioned this or not, but you are the whole reason we got to eat at Tuskerhouse this year. We had RFC scheduled for breakfast but when I read your Tuskerhouse review in your TR I had to go back. I headed over to the Disney dining website as soon as I read your update and right there was that hard to get 8:05 adr like 2 weeks out on a day we could do AK. There had been no openings for weeks. I had given up but it just so happened one opened at the right time. Thank you:worship:

OMG I so wish I knew you could request pancakes in Akershus! We were just there and my DS ate maybe 4 grapes. I told him we won't go back and eat with the princesses because I'm not paying that much money for grapes!

Also, I feel you on the tator tots. My DH fave thing at Tusker house is the tator tots which is the ONLY way I can get him to return. When we were there in May the character interaction was terrible so we're going to skip it next trip!

Loving your reviews!

I would have never known if I didn't read it here. I think it's a bit unfair that they don't let you know. DD would have only had grapes too.

Sorry to hear the character interaction wasn't good. We just like getting the picture so as long as the character stops at the table we are happy.

Great reviews! I love your DD's picture with Belle - so adorable!

Thank you. I loved her pictures with Cinderella and Belle. It is so nice having them included in the meal.

MM was a disappointment. I really want to love that place too, b/c love the interior. Maybe we'll give it another shot in a few years.

Captain's Grill was awesome, but I think it was the great service that really sent it over the top. The best part is that it is usually easy to get into.

:laughing:Weight Watchers is calling my name and there is no way I'll ever finish these reviews while eating my salad.

Captain's Grill is a great back up.

I wish we were able to make it there for breakfast. I can't wait to see how you like it.

I was surprised that Boma wasn't as great as I remembered. Probably just an off day. We will most likely try it again at some point since we will definitely be staying at AKL again.

Akershus was very good, but as good as the food was I wouldn't eat there without a kid who wanted to. The whole princess procession would annoy me after awhile.

I loved Cape May. I don't know how I am going to chose between my favorites next trip since I want to keep adrs to a minimum.

Awww, so sad the reviews are over...

I definitely want to try Cape May Cafe for breakfast sometime - it looks real good. And the characters are in the beach outfits - how cute! My family went to Beaches and Cream a few years ago and got the Kitchen Sink. What a creation! There were four of us and we couldn't finish it... I'm pretty sure we are going to try and tackle it again this year. :woohoo:

Thanks for all the wonderful reviews! I really enjoyed your report!!! :goodvibes

again, my DH is like yours. i think if the dining plan would cost me $10 more than out of pocket, i'd still do it just so i wouldn't hear dh say he's not hungry once he sees the prices.

What was in the potatoes at Akershus? they looked good!

The tator tots were my favorite thing at Tusker house. I'd definitely eat there again for breakfast.

Cape May looks like a good option. i've always been curious about it but not willing to give up that much park time.

sort of related, because i saw them in your picture... how did you like those antibacterial wipes? i picked up a box and most of them were too dry to use. did you have that issue?

Thanks for taking the time to do all these reviews. I really enjoyed reading them all. Your pictures were great!

Thanks for reading! Cape May was fantastic. It was a very relaxed breakfast which was very different than most of the others. I admit I booked it purely for the characters in beach wear(and asparagus)

I would love to try the kitchen sink, but need to wait until we have a few more people with us.

Right now I think OOP sounds better but I might be better off with a dining plan. DH tends to worry about prices too much.

Cape May is great. I don't know if I would make it there without a rental car or staying in the area though. We had a 7:40 adr so we could make it to a park by 9am if needed.

I love that Tuskerhouse has tater tots. They are so good. They should teach CM how to make them, b/c CM are gross and dry:confused3

 I noticed the wipes were a bit drier. We were still able to use them, but I will be back to reguar wet wipes next time. That's what you get for trying to save money on hand wipes:rotfl:

GREAT REVIEW!!!! :thumbsup2
Thank you:flower3:

Thanks for taking the time to do all these reviews. I really enjoyed reading them all. Your pictures were great!

Thanks for reading. I am glad I got as many pictures as I did. There were times DH and DD refused and times when they adjusted their plate for the perfect shot. I think they are starting to get used to it, so hopefully next trip I can get everything they eat.

Wow! How did I miss all those updates? :confused3

Well, at least, I am all caught up now and let me tell you that I REALLY enjoyed ALL your reviews!

You should go back sooner than you say in your signature! ;) You do great work! Thank you!

Thanks for reading:flower3: I know we don't eat at very interesting places since I let Caitlin pick them, but it's still Disney food.

I wish we could go back sooner. I thinking the soonest we will be back will be Oct. 2013, but DH likes to say Oct. 2014. We'll see who wins that one.

Caitlin loves Pluto. She got into Disney characters when she used to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Pluto was always her favorite. She was always carrying around her stuffed Pluto. She used to play with our dog and say "I'm Mickey Mouse and you're Pluto. Good boy, Pluto" It was so adorable. Can you tell I miss those days? These days she won't say he is her favorite but she always got pretty excited when he was around.:goodvibes

I just saw the link to your dining report. great write up for Sci Fi.

I had to quote here because Pluto is Katie's favorite character as well. She bought a baby Pluto on our first day there and she has been sleeping with it and playing with it ever since. Its really too bad we didn't connect! I was mad at myself when I realized I had your cell stored in a note on my phone, but not until Saturday the 21st. :headache:

Besides you don't go to Discovery Cove for the food. You go to kiss a dolphin!

M051811_00_0072.jpg

I love this! to cute!!
I just read through all of your reviews. good feedback!!! I wish I had read more Cape May breakfast reviews - we would have done that over Chef Mickey.

I think like you our next trip will not include so many character meals. I see that CMs are always buffets, and really aside from the breakfast buffet at Akershus we prefer to be waited on :rotfl: more than "help yourself".

I wish we could go back sooner. I thinking the soonest we will be back will be Oct. 2013, but DH likes to say Oct. 2014. We'll see who wins that one.

I am hoping, praying, wishing for you to win! :goodvibes Maybe I should have a word with Caitlin, so she can "work on" Daddy! :rotfl2:
