I always read such great dining reviews on the WDW board, that I thought I would post some from our recent trip to DL here.
For some background information, our family consists of myself (somewhat picky), DH (better than me), DSs, Cameron 9, and Colton 6. Cam is somewhat picky too, but he is getting adventurous and well let's just say Colton gives a new meaning to the word picky.
None of us are into fancy/funky food, just the basics. And for the record, we dont usually eat and drink like this at home. But on vacation, the diet and rules go out the window (and the scale is showing it now).
BREAKFASTS
PCH GRILL ALOHA BREAKFAST- After doing Goofys Kitchen a couple times, I wanted to try a new character breakfast this trip, and since we were staying at Paradise Pier Hotel, we decided on PCH Grill. We were very impressed with this meal.
We arrived about 5-10 minutes early for our 9:10 PS and were seated with about a 10 minute wait. They had a huge variety of food at the buffet and everything was delicious. I loved the coconut/pineapple scones, they were very different. One of the offerings (Im not sure why) was boiled white rice. That is 1 of the few food Colton eats, so that worked well for him he had a bagel, rice and cereal. The rest of us tried a little of just about everything. Some that stand out are the above mentioned scones, Cam really enjoyed the chocolate croissants, scrambled eggs (they also had an omlette station), bacon, sausage, potatoes, and pancakes. They had some specialty eggs too, some with ricotta cheese and spinach in them. I tried them, but they were a bit too funky for me.
The character interaction was great here. Not only did Lilo, Stitch, and Minnie (and Pluto, for some) make the rounds, but Stitchs handler, also ran some games for the kids. She got them up dancing with Stitch and playing an Island hopping game (similar to musical chairs). The music and theming gave it a fun atmosphere.
By the end I almost had to be rolled out of the restaurant I ate so much. I would definitely go back here, if for nothing else, the scones.
CLUB BUZZ- We stopped here for breakfast on one of our Early Entry mornings, after doing most of Fantasyland. For counter service in a park, this breakfast was delicious. We were very impressed by everything. I had the bacon egg and cheese sandwich on a croissant. The eggs were well cooked and there was a lot of bacon with it. The croissant itself seemed very fresh and soft. It also came with home fries which were very flavorful. I didnt even need ketchup on them.
DH had the sunrise breakfast with eggs, sausage, home fries and a muffin. Again, everything he had he enjoyed very much. Cam had the French Toast Sticks and liked them. I tried a bite of one and again, thought these were very good.(Colt had a Pop Tart from home, he didnt like anything on the menu.) Everything seemed almost higher quality than usual counter service, and it was all good sized. Hungry as we were, we filled up on this breakfast. I would make it a point to go back there again.
JAZZ KITCHEN EXPRESS- We stopped here (in Downtown Disney)on our way to the park one morning. They open at 8:00 and we made it there right about 5 of. Even up until about 8:40 when we left it wasnt very crowded at all.
Here DH got the breakfast sandwich which was good (he even got it a second time). Cam and I got beignets which were a new thing for us. They seemed to be a cross between fried dough and a doughnut, put in a bag with a LOT of powdered sugar. By the time breakfast was over we were covered in it but it was worth it. Colt got cereal. On their second visit there the boys got beignets too (I didnt go this time)
COMPASS BOOKS & CAFÉ- On our departure morning, while the boys went off to the Jazz Kitchen, I just got a muffin and donuts at the Compass Books & Café, right at the beginning of Downtown Disney. I brought these back to the room and ate while packing up. The donuts were Krispy Kremes which of course are very good and came 2 to a box (I saved 1 for the boys when they returned). I also got a banana nut muffin. This was, not great, but good enough
. It could have used more banana flavor and almost had that in the case too long taste. This was about 9:00am, so I wouldnt think it was sitting there too long, but it could have been tastier. While in line I did notice some very delicious looking desserts in the case and if you are a coffee drinker (Im not), they seemed to have different flavors for the coffee. The line was pretty long so I would guess the coffee is pretty good. This would be a nice place to grab a snack and coffee, maybe a late night dessert or when you are looking to relax and avoid the craziness of the parks.
BLUE RIBBON BAKERY- Located on Main Street, this is one we like to visit on Early Entry mornings and we did on our second EE day, after experiencing Fantasyland. Between us we had a chocolate muffin, blueberry muffin, a very large sticky bun/pecan roll thing, and 2 very large cinnamon rolls. While we enjoy everything here very much, we do wish there was a bit more of a selection. Bagels would be a nice addition to help reduce the sugar high. We did like everything though.
TABLE SERVICE LUNCH & DINNERS
NAPLES- We had a 1:30 PS here on our arrival day. Things went smoothly, our plane was on time and check in was quick. We were ready for lunch much earlier, closer to 12:00. We arrived early and told them we had a later PS. The restaurants only had a few tables full so seating us right away was not a problem.
We were offered inside or out and chose to eat outside. This was just what we needed, to be in the California sun after arriving from cold Boston. DH & I got a pizza to share. This was good, it was tasty, but I would have liked a bit more cheese on it. They sort of put the cheese on in clumps, so wherever it melts to is where it is. Some places had no cheese, just dough and sauce. It wasnt bad, but I prefer more cheese. Cam had the kids pizza, which he said was the best pizza. On a previous trip we had gotten a pizza to go at the adjacent Napolini and that was excellent. I think Cam still thought it was the same pizza, because he really liked that one. Unfortunately, it wasnt the same . Colton got the kids pasta with butter and grated cheese. He was impressed with the waitress grating the cheese for him.
BLUE BAYOU- We had a 6:30 Priority Seating here. Again, we arrived early here, probably about 6:00. This time we requested a waterside table and told them we didnt mind waiting for one. Usually I wouldnt be picky but when we ate here over the summer I had played up to the kids how the restaurant is in the Pirates of the Caribbean, you see the boats, etc and we ended up in the very last table in the restaurant, no where near the water, almost in the lobby, LOL! So,this time we waited about 15-20 minutes and lucked out with a seat right along the water. It really does add to the atmosphere.
Here we were started off with some rolls and butter and we all agreed these are the best rolls! Im ashamed to say it, but we went through 2 baskets of them. I could have made a meal out of them. DH and I had salads. He had a creamy Italian and I had the house dressing. The dressings were good, but neither of us liked the actual salad. They serve the lettuce that is like weeds, and we dont care for that, but I know many people do. I had the Chicken Florentine which is a chicken with spinach, served over pasta with a slightly spicy cream sauce. I had gotten this dish the last time and liked it very much. It did not disappoint. DH had the special of the day, I think it was a short rib. Basically it was a piece of beef and that was delicious. It also came with mashed potatoes which DH liked. Cam had corndogs and Colt had pasta with butter and grated cheese. Everyone was happy and full when we left here.
ARIELS GROTTO- I had the chance to dine here on a business trip (without my family) a few months ago. When I did I saw the kids hot dogs were cut like an Octopus, which I thought was cute and started doing this for DSs. Since then, Colt was convinced we had to go here for the Octodog. Neither of the boys are big Princess fans, but knowing he wanted the hot dog, and what a fun experience it was before we decided to go back. Plus I couldnt wait to have the delicious Rocky Road dessert that I had been raving about again.
We had a PS booked for 2:30. We arrived about 2:00 and requested a table outside. It was a nice day and I feel eating outside adds to the experience here. They told us we could wait and it wouldnt be too long. So we went to the lounge which is adjoining to the check in area upstairs (the restaurant is downstairs). Here DH and I each got a specialty drink, Riptide Tea (warning this is very strong) and California Calypso, while we waited. This was a really nice place to sit and relax. They serve appetizers and drinks, and there is a great view of the park. It was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the parks.
Before we had finished our drinks we were called downstairs to our table outside. We were explained the set up, you pick 1 appetizer, 1 entrée and 1 dessert. Again here we got some pretty good rolls, but we had to ask for them. I remembered getting them before and saw them on other tables, but we werent given them.
The kids both got carrots and celery with ranch dressing (Cam ate Colts). Cam got the special of the day, mini burgers with fries and Colt got his Octodog, served on macaroni and cheese. Cam liked his food, Colton said the hotdog tasted weird (all this for a hot dog that tastes weird). I tried it and it was fine, just different than what hes used to. He did eat some of the macaroni though. DH started out with the salad and I had the onion soup. The salad was that same kind of leafy lettuce that we dont care for, but the soup was very good. We both got the burgers and steak fries which were very good too. I was filling up but saved room for the awesome dessert I knew I had coming I could taste it. Then the waitress came out to us and said the kitchen just had to close down because it was flooding and they cannot bring out any more food. Not even dessert? Nope! Can we wait? Nope, we are closing down.
I do understand things happen and they have no choice but to close down, but like I said, I had been raving about this dessert and couldn't wait to have it again...and we were so close!
But I definitely didnt need it by that point, so it was probably a good thing. Also they took off 15% of the bill since the price includes dessert.
I should also add the Princesses were very good. We didnt see any of them for quite a while into our meal, but then they finally came around. My kids dont really talk much to the characters, they pose for the picture (for me I guess) and then they are done, LOL! So, the Princesses tried their best to make conversation. Also, before they came out we had a man, dressed up (I forget what he said he was, a page or something like that maybe) come to our table. He was very friendly and stayed chatting for probably close to 5 minutes. He was a nice guy from Chicago.
ESPN-We hadnt planned on eating here this trip, however on this particular day we filled up at the PCH Grill in the morning, then went to a basketball game. All we had there was 1 pretzel, and 1 tub of popcorn between the 4 of us. So, by the time we returned to the Disneyland area it was about 8:30 PM and we were in the mood for something not a huge meal, but we could go for something. Being in sports mode from the game, we decided to go to ESPN for some appetizers.
We were able to walk right in and get a table in back of the lounge area. We had tried doing this for a snack the night before and the restaurant and bar area were mobbed. There was no chance of getting a seat then, so walking in tonight was nice.
Here we started off with a Caeser Salad. This was very large and we all shared it (well, except Colton). We liked it. It wasnt the best salad ever, but pretty good. Colton got a kids meal hot dog and fries. Again, he thought the hot dog tasted funny,
but he liked the fries
actually we all did. They have really good fries here. We also got an order of nachos to share. I had been hesitant to order these here because the menu says they come with a cheese sauce, (not real melted cheese) and to me that makes or breaks nachos. However I was in the mood for nachos, so I was willing to deal with sauce on them. Being with the kids, we order everything on the side. Come to find out they came with the sauce and some real shredded cheese too. Had we known we would have made sure to get that cheese melted on the nachos, but now we know for next time. And to my surprise, this was a very tasty sauce. It wasnt the typical cheese sauce you get on nachos as sports stadiums or places like that. This had something more to it. The other sides on the nachos were sour cream, pico de gallo, and olives. We enjoyed these very much and I would get them again
sauce and all.
The atmosphere here was fun too, especially with sports fans in the family. Here we were able to watch the closing ceremonies of the Olympics. which was nice entertainment while we ate.
COUNTER SERVICE
TASTE PILOTS GRILL- Cam is suddenly on a popcorn chicken kick, so after hearing they served that as a kids meal here, we knew we had to get it. This was served in a lunch box with smiley face potatoes (fries). There was a quite bit of chicken and Cam liked it. I tried some and thought it was pretty good too. DH got a burger with waffle fries here, which he liked. It was your typical burger. Since there was nothing here Colton would eat, we opted to go back to one of our previous favorites
PIZZA OOO MOW MOW- This is another one of those counter service places that surprised me. We had eaten here in the summer really enjoyed it. Here Colt got the kids pasta with butter and grated cheese. Since this comes with sauce and a meatball, we asked for those on the side. This way I was able to have a meatball with my meal since Colton wouldn't eat it.
I got the adults pasta dish which again, was very good. The sauce has a nice flavor and its thick, not runny. We also got a Caesar Salad to split between us all. Everything here was a good size and very filling. For counter service this meal is very good too.
HAAGEN DAZS- Throughout the trip we got a few ice creams here. They were your typical ice creams, very good. Colt liked the cones with the tops dipped in chocolate and jimmies.
MARCELINES CONFECTIONERY- One night while the kids were getting snacks at Haagen Dazs, I decided to pop into Marcelines to see what I could find. Besides being in the usual chocolate heaven, I found something I thought was unique. It was a white chocolate covered strawberry, covered in chocolate chips. I probably shouldnt admit this, but that was my dinner one night and it was delicious!
TIKI JUICE BAR This stand located right outside the Enchanted Tiki Room sells one of my kids favorites, Dole Whips. Basically they are a pineapple soft serve icecream. While I really like these in WDW, the ones in DL dont measure up. Here they only have pineapple, whereas in WDW they can do a pineapple/vanilla swirl. Personally, I think the straight pineapple is too much and it needs the creamy vanilla to even it out. But my kids like these ones just as much so this is a mandatory stop on all our Disney trips.
CHURROS- These sugar/cinnamon covered fried dough sticks always make a nice park snack. They are another requirement of our Disneyland trips. Yummy, but sticky.
Overall, we had a lot of great food and we were very happy with the dining experience we had here. Getting back on the diet has been tough .and I keep craving the elusive Rocky Road Dessert.
