I'm vaguely familiar with the dining plan.. but am mostly clueless

What are ADRs?!

I see lots of people mentioning free dining! What is that? How do you get it? How does it work?

Thanks!

Actually, FWIR, ADR is also no longer being used -- they're just "reservations" now. The circle is complete.

Free dining is over, you had to book a few months ago, for trips ending pretty soon. They had it last fall also, so if you are travelling next fall you might be able to get it. ADR advanced dining reservations--reservations but not really--just supposedly that they seat you before walk ins around the time you "reserve". From what Ive been reading people with ADRs still are waiting about 15-20 minutes to be seated...Theres great DP info on allearsnet.com, and great menus too.

ADRs (well, as Bicker points out, "reservations") are like call-ahead seating at your local 99, Chilis, Fridays, etc - except instead of calling ahead before you leave the house to drive over, you can call up to 180 days ahead :)
You make your 'reservation', then arrive at the restaurant five or ten minutes early (you'll be told to, when you make the original call - as well as during all the subsequent calls when you change your mind, or second-guess yourself, or something conflicts with something else...) and check in with the Host/ess.
You will then be seated at the next available table for your size party, after the other parties of the same size who checked in before you did are seated.

Thanks for the info so far!

How does one hear about the Free dining? We go to WDW every September, so if it's available next fall, how and when can I find out about it?

And if I can keep bothering you all.. ha ha... how does "free dining" work?!

Thanks for the help

The best way to find out about free dining is on this site. You can also hear about it if you subscribe to Mousesavers.com and keep your eyes open and look for the promotion in the travel section of Sunday papers, travel agents are also made aware of the promotion. You must book your stay (usually a minimum of 3 nights) at one of the Disney resorts and also purchase (in that package) a minimum of a one day park ticket. Then you will get the free dining package for your length of stay. You will get 1 table service meal, 1 counter service meal and 1 snack for each person for each night of your stay. You can use the meals and snacks in any order at any time during the stay. It is a great deal. These are the "rules" for the 2006 offer. Things could change for next year if they offer it. I think it was about March or April when the offer was publicized this year. (It seems like we have been planning our trip forever at this point). Good Luck for next September!
