Unfortunately, DDP is one of those things Disney does haphazardly with no rhyme or reason as to when they raise prices. If you're traveling later this year, and you THINK you want it, go ahead and book it with your package. You can drop it later if you decide it's not for you. Just don't wait too late as there is a "change fee" when you get close to your check-in date.

There is a free dining offer out there at the moment. You may want to check into that.

As far as the book-then-drop strategy - that's completely valid until the final package payment date (30 days prior to arrival). After that, there will be a change fee if you're reducing the overall cost of your package (they usually waive the fee if you're increasing the overall price, though). And then there's a potential last-minute change fee, and I can never remember if that's for changes within 7 or 14 days of arrival.

Still, you did hit on the main point, which is that buying DDP does insulate you from any price increases that happen after you book it.
