Dimes For Disney

Has anyone tried this before? I saw on Pinterest that a 2 liter bottle filled with dimes would equal about $500 and the kids and I are going to try this as we're saving for our next trip. The 5 year old is especially driven to help us save money after watching the Frozen ride-through on youtube! She wants on that ride ASAP!!!

Anyway, since I refuse to believe anything I see on Pinterest, I'm wondering if anyone has ever tried it and can tell me how much to expect? I also made a couple new coin collection cans from coffee containers and emptied my purse into them (except for the dimes). My purse is now 10 pounds lighter and there's a good handful of change in each can.

My kids went through their piggy banks and found a bunch of dimes to put in the bottle, and I went through some old change that I had put away for spending money for our last trip (which ended up being cancelled so we didn't use the money) and the little one helped me sort all the dimes into the bottle so we're off to a good start on our Dimes For Disney savings project : )

from what i have read - it is between 500-700 - i think it will depend on how the dimes settle in the bottle - every once in awhile you can try to shuffle them in the bottle

I save change, but I never thought about saving just dimes! Great idea! Especially if a 2 liter bottle can hold that much in dimes.

I'm fully committed to "rounding up". I prefer to pay cash for our extras, like going to the movies or buying craft supplies and other fun stuff, so I'm going to make an effort to pay for those things with $10s or $20s and then put any change aside for Disney. I've done that before and it added up, but then I got out of the habit.

My 5 year old seems to have taken this as her pet project. Grandma called earlier and I had to correct my daughter when she asked Grandma for dimes : ) Plus, she's learning to recognize and count money. We're going to have to have a talk because she seems convinced that once we fill the 2 liter bottle we can take it to the bank and they'll send us to Disney.

We've got the bottle filled about 1/6th and judging by how heavy it is already, I'm wondering whether I will be able to carry a 2 liter bottle full of dimes. I may have to roll it out the door.

$700 would be awesome!!! that would almost cover the airfare for the 3 of us!

I'm saving for Vegas for my 50th Birthday. My dh always gives the extra change/bills to the kids in their water jugs. I think I am going to ask him to
do this too and give me the dimes. He is a big Diet Coke drinker so getting the bottle will be at least easy LOL

Banks in my area don't except coins anymore unless you roll all of them yourself.
Also Coinstar takes 11 % off the total. So instead of using my coins to help to paying some on our trip,
I have been using them for buying one and two small items at store that I need during the week and using the pay yourself machines.
I may have to suck it up and go to coinstar for all the small coins.
Last year I was able to use coinstar for Southwest airlines but this year SW air is over priced and I had to book with Frontier.

I save my coins but also $1 bills. Like if I have $12 I will put the $2 in the jar. Unless it adds up to the next $5 or $10 the overage goes in the jar.

This was mostly quarters - and it ended up being $302.48. But that's a gallon jug, not a 2 liter bottle.

When I took over $300 to Coinstar I got it in a Amazon gift card to avoid the 11% charge.

I have saved coins before and I did roll them. I had been saving for a year or so and there was no way I was letting a penny go anywhere else LOL
I'll just go to the bank and get the paper to roll the coins.

Coinstar only has 6 choices Now in gift cards to choose from.
It looks like Coinstar is slowly eliminating Gift Cards as an option,
eventually you will have to either roll coins or take the % hit.

I would just roll coins while I sit in front of the TV. 11% is just too much. That is $11 for every $100 that you have saved. Insane!

The banks I have worked in didn't do rolled coins. We would have to unroll them to run through the machine. That's crazy!

That's a super high rate for constant!! I used it a couple of years ago when it was $.09/$1, and it made me sick when I turned in over $100 dollars and saw that I'd "spent" $9.45 to do it!

I think my bank let's me drop off my change and than after counting it tells me how much I have, so I might roll nickels, dimes, quarters and turn in pennies to have them count.

The first time DH went to Disney in Feb. 2014, right before we got engaged, he loved it so much that by the second day he asked me when we would come back. We decided that we would buy a piggy bank during that trip and put all of our loose change and extra bills into the bank. We used it and took the funds with us on our Feb. 2016 trip. It was about $200. We have since started saving again for our 2018 trip. I think it's fun to give your extra change a purpose.

At my Coinstar, a Best Buy egift card is an option. Some Best Buys will allow you to purchase a Disney gc with their GC. Ymmv

Yea! Or if you have kids or easily amused nieces/nephews make it a game. Have them roll them for you, maybe for cake or something. I thought rolling coins was great fun as a kid, myself .
