I am now the proud owner of a digital camera. It uses Compact Flash. My dilemma is how much flash memory to take. I have no intent of taking my laptop with me on my fall cruise to download the contents of my memory cards for re-use.

My question, for anyone that knows, is whether DCL has the facilities on board to read compact flash cards and burn them to CDs? It is really a simple process, and requires very little hardware. All they need is a PC with a CD burner and a flash memory reader. I'm sure there are photography services available on board. Do they offer this type of service?

Put another way, what photographic services are offered, aside from their photographer running around taking pictures?

Thanks.... Paul

I'm not sure what kind of services are offered for you for digital cameras on board but I would think you may come out as well buying an extra flash card or two. That way you would always have it. I have a Sony and it uses memory sticks. A 128 meg stick will hold about 850+ pictures if shot on a fine jpg setting. I assume a flash card would be about the same.

I don't know the answer to your question about hardware to burn cd's, but I am planning on bringing two 256 CF cards. This will give me the equivalent of 13 rolls of 24 exp film. Plenty of picture taking ability!

I already have a 128Mb Flash card. I was going to buy another. I would feel even better were I to be able to burn the pictures and reuse the flash cards. Besides, even if I didn't reuse them, at least I get a backup of my photos that way.

Also, I am shooting in the 4Mpixel mode, using jpg compression, yielding around 70 pictures on a 128Mb Flash card. I figure memory is cheap, and when the detail is gone, it's gone. I can always dumb down the pictures later.

Where is the best place to buy Flash cards? Do you know how much they cost? Ive got a Kodak 3900

I bought a 128Mb San Disk Compact Flash this past weekend at Best Buy for $79 - $10 Instant discount - $20 Rebate = $49 final cost.

Keep watching the weekend sales fliers or go to www.saleshound.com, enter your zipcode, enter what you are looking for, and see what is on sale around you.

Hope that helps...

I used a digital camera on a recent cruise and took over 1 gig of pictures. I took my lap top with me to down load the pictures.

My camera took 3 mB pictures and I took a lot.

There were no CD burners on the cruise that belonged to the DCL.

I suggest to buy more memory then you think you'll need and sell on EBAY when you get home.

another option is to purchase a mindstor or similar device which is basically just a portable hard drive. Download the cf card when it gets full, reformat your card in your camera and you are good to go. Look at digital photo site Go to the forum sections and check for the info that you need. Mike
