Digital Camera - Need advice...

Hi,

I have seen many beautiful photos on DIS, so I think you could help me decide :

I intend to buy a digital camera and I'm having some difficulty to choose.

I'm thinking about buying a Canon A70 or a Sony DSC-P72.
Which one is the best considering photo quality, portability and special features?

Unfortunately, I know nothing about the Sony, but have the Canon A70 and love, love, love it! Great quality and very easy to use.

I'm interested, too, but I was thinking of going with one of the Kodak digital cameras - I kind of like the idea of the Kodak photo dock - seems like an easy way to print/e-mail/download your pix.

I can't help you with either of those, but I can tell you DO NOT BUY A FUJI!! I have had nothing but problems with 2 different camera's. Their customer service is horrible as I am now awaiting getting this camera fixed for the 3rd time with no response from them yet.

Hopefully Gail Hayden will chime in here soon, she was SO VERY helpful to many people over on the budget board who were looking for Digitial Cameras for Christmas.

But in the meantime.... I looked at the Canon A80, and a Sony, and a Nikon CoolPix 3100. We went with the Nikon and have been thrilled with it so far. Pics are awesome, easy to use, takes AA batteries (so in a pinch we could buy them easily).

I also liked Kodak for the dock, but almost everyone said, don't get a dock, it is a waste of money. We got a memory card reader instead, and it also allows you to transfer all the pics from camera to computer at one time. Our reader was free with a memory card purchase, but card readers are in the $20-$40 range, much much cheaper than a dock.

There may be other features to a dock that I'm missing, but for us, things are going great with just the card reader. Good luck!

Our whole family owns Sony. They are awsome. Easy to use and the pictures are great. Small enough to carry anywhere. I vote any of the Sony models.

What you need may be different from what others need so try to define your likes and dislikes and find a camera that works for you.

I've read that with a good brand 3.2 Mpixels camera I'll have printed photos with the same quality of a traditional camera.
I have a non-digital Canon that is great, so I think that is a good brand.
In addition, I want an easy-to-carry camera and I need some optical zoom (I think that the digital zoom doesn't mean much to the quality, but the optical is OK, am I right ?).
Do you think that a Canon A70 will meet my requirements ?

Pokie : A friend of mine likes his Sony a lot, but I've read some bad comments about the quality of Sony photos, especially with low light. Do you think it's true ?

I've had a Fuji digital camara for a couple years now and never had any problems with it. It is only a 1 megapixal so I am looking to upgrade to a 3. I would consider buying a Fuji again but want to check out other brands too.

I voted for a different one because I am in love with my Christmas present.

It's a Kodak EasyShare DX4530 (5 Megapixels) It has the capabilities of taking sports pictures, shooting video, going panoramic, and very close up (for very tiny things), all with a quick flip of the switch. There are about a million other features I won't bore you with, but I'm in love!

I also have the Easy Share camera dock II, so I can explain that, too. The dock plugs into your computer and is the place where you can recharge you camera and transfer all the pictures you've taken with a push of a button. It comes with some very cool software for editing your pictures, too.

The camera uses 30 meg of internal memory, and I also got a 256 memory card. On the highest, best quality setting I can store about 200 pictures before transfering them to the computer. On the regular picture setting, I can get about 500 pictures in before needed to transfer. (This will come in very handy for WDW!)

Anyway, Circuit City had an online special so the camera cost $289, and the dock was $70. I peeked at mom's receipt when we were visiting, because I couldn't believe she'd bought me such a fantastic camera

We bought our daughter the Canon Ixus 400 for her 18th the week before Christmas. She was chief photographer on our WDW holiday over Christmas and New Year and the photographs are fantastic. It's so easy to use and it also has a 3 minute video recording with sound - she recorded the fireworks at Magic Kingdom (and it still makes me cry, the quality is superb.

We just bought the Minolta DiMage Z1 and the Sony Mavica CD350. We couldn't make up our minds, so we thought we'd try them both out and return one! I know it sounds terrible, but they are expensive cameras and I just need to know which one is better! If you have either of the two, I would love to hear your opinions!

We gave my DS a Canon A80 for xmas and wow, it is so very nice.

We debated on the 70, but decided to go with the 4 mp.

We have two other Canons , too.

Excellent picture quality.

I got a Sony P52 for Christmas and so far I love it. My Mom has a Sony P72 and her pictures are SHARP- she took all her photos on our two trips to WDW this year on it and they are GREAT photos! Plus it is so portable, easy to use...mine is very similar to hers except mine is 3.2 MP and hers is 4.0 and hers is a bit smaller.
