Why does the space mountain at DL have a 40 inch requirement and the one at DW has a 44 inch requirement?

Probably because of the difference in seating. It could be an issue with the different lap bars and safety. Or it could be that the DLR height requirement is lower because you sit 2 by 2 in the rocket instead of single file line style.

The real question is why Dinosaur and Indy have significantly different height requirements because the vehicles on those two rides are EXACTLY the same. :confused3

I think DLR29 got it. Though I would probably add that they might have the same name and premise, but people who've ridden both say they are very different actual rides...comparing WDW's version to Matterhorn (of course, M'horn has a 35" height req, but then the seating at this time allows you to have arms around little ones).

As for Indy...it's likely just FL vs CA laws. Just like the swimming pool slide differences (can't say carseat law differences now b/c my aunt, who lives in FL, said they've just tightened those up in the last few months!) where it's far more lax in FL.

Kali vs GRR, though not the exact same ride, also have the same differences in height where Kali's height is lower...

It's interesting b/c I think SM at DL is far more intense than at WDW (from what I remember at least). DH rode SM at DL for the first time last weekend and felt it was much faster/more thrilling than the one at WDW. So it's interesting that the DL height requirement is shorter. BUT you must be right about the seating configuration factoring into it.
