I saw this movie when it first came out. I really enjoyed it and actually found myself feeling a little sorry for the main character, (who was a serial killer - I know, I know, I am way too sympathetic of people). By the way, CHARLIZE THERON did an excellent job playing the part and deserves to win the
Academy Award for best actress.
Anyway, from this article that I read in the Det. Free Press (written by a woman who has authored a book about the murderer and has studied the murderer for 13 years), apparently, the scene where the main character is brutally beaten and raped did NOT even happen! It is in THAT scene that we develop sort of a pity for the main character and we are actually glad when she blows the guy away! We are led to believe in the movie, that it was that brutal rape that set off the killing spree by the main character (who was eventually convicted and put to death).
I was just very surprised to read this since I assumed that at least the details of the murders were portrayed correctly, even if Hollywood may have "doctored up" other little details.
Oh well, it just goes to show you, you can't believe anything that Hollywood dishes out, even if it is supposedly "based on a true story". I guess "based on a true story" can have a wide range of meaning.
