I have to go with the masses on this one. I am sure this boy is a great kid. If you want him to be involved with your DD, invite him to go to bowling with your family, invite him to go to dinner with you, invite him to her dance recitals.
There is absolutely no reason for this man to be alone with your DD - you're asking for trouble.
As for having a confidante, that is what cousins, aunts, grandparents, teachers, friends in her own age group and parents are for.
I am sorry you thought this thread got nasty, but really you are just not hearing what you wanted to hear. I do think you should take careful consideration of the overwhelming opinions you are hearing here.
