Did you get charged taxes/duty and/or brokerage fees on your photpass cd ?

Got my photopass cd this morning delivered by UPS (ughhh) and the guy just dropped off the cd at the door. I didn't have to pay any charges to get my cd. I did receive an "Invoice" with the cd that says the unit value is $10 US. It doesn't talk about paying it and kind of looks like Disney marked the value as $10.

Can anyone tell me if they had to pay fees after the fact ? I know I ordered something awhile ago and weeks after I got a letter from UPS saying how much I owed. I wasn't charged tax on this order so I'm thinking I must owe for that at least.

I went splits on the photo cd and would like to know for sure so I can split the costs evenly.

Any help would be appreciated.

We ordered the photo book and we were charged GST when they delivered it to us no other charges just that.

With UPS, if the item was shipped by air, you don't have to pay any fees. I'm pretty sure that since your item was marked as $10, you won't have to pay any additional money. UPS only charges when the sender ships by ground and the item is valued at more than $20 (there's a chart somewhere on the UPS site that outlines the fees for). It's also been my experience that they generally won't release the item if money is owed on it.

Items valued at under $20 you generally don't get whacked with customs fees for. Brokerage fees are another matter though - UPS seems to charge those or not at their own whim.

I bought an item from ebay a few weeks back that was delivered by UPS. The item was $24.00 and I paid $10.00 shipping & handling to the seller.

The UPS guys shows up at my door and wants something like $58.00 in customs and brokerage fees!! I nearly dropped dead on the spot...after I stopped laughing at how ridiculous it was.

I just told him to take it back. I wasn't paying it.

Luckily when I contacted the seller, I was able to get my money back for the item.

I'll know better next time if anything says it is shipped by UPS

I hadn't even thought about all that when I ordered by cd. Everytime something gets shipped through UPS I get charged something extra

UPS normally charges absurdly high brokerage fees. If you are buying goods on ebay, never have the seller ship via UPS. Always use USPS -- Canada Post only charges $5 in brokerage fee.

Any duty (or GST, PST) payable will be the same, regardless of who delivers the product.

However, when I ordered the photopass CD, it was shipped via UPS, but I was only charged a $10 brokerage fee (I haven't paid it yet......)

As a Canadian Customs Broker, I would like to give you the following tips:
-Almost anything valued at $20.00 cad and under can enter canada without duties and taxes. (Food and plants are another story) Athough the courier company may charge you a brokerage fee which could be around $5.00
- Never have something shipped to the company you work at. If a package is addressed to a company it then becomes a commercial shipment and has to be cleared through a Customs Broker. There are high brokerage fees and more than likely duty will also be applied. For personal shipments the regulatations on Nafta are more relaxed, therefore less chance of duty. Expect GST and PST to be applied on personal shipments were as commerical shipments PST is not charged.
- Anything shipped via a courier company valued at $1600.00 cad or less gets delievered directly to you (unless it is COD). The courier company then has till the 19th of the following month to make a declaration to Customs. This is why you may not see a bill for a few months.

I hope this information helps. I hate to see people get shipments and have to pay extra duty because someone was unclear about Customs regulation.
