Did you get a diploma when you graduated from HS/college?

HS provided our diplomas at the graduation ceremony.

I didn't go to my graduation for BS or MBA. For BS, the school said that I worked and lived in in town, so I could pick up my diploma. I worked longer hours than they were open. My brother picked it up for me and caused a scene by announcing to anyone who cared that the school was too cheap to pay for a stamp.

They mailed my MBA degree to me.

BS degree was conferred in an un-air conditioned gym and the MBA was outside under a tent. Both on very hot and humid days. I graduated both times from my parents' pool.

Nope. I graduated 3 times (high school, college and law school). In every case, I was handed an empty folder, and got the actual diploma in the mail. My law school diploma, I had to purchase, and had the option of a smaller one to fit in the little case or a VERY LARGE (probably 11x15?) suitable for framing. I opted for the large one, and it's still rolled up inside the case it came in. You can see what the value I had on it by the time it came. It's not that I wasn't proud of it...I am...but I've always disliked the "glamour wall" in lawyer's offices. I have similar large certificates from being admitted to various Bar associations. Never displayed a one of them. LOL

I've heard it referred to as the "ego wall."

A question for those with college diplomas: does your diploma show your major or is it more general? Mine shows that I have a Bachelor of Science from the College of Arts and Sciences but it doesn't show my actual major.

No major listed on my diploma. It's the same as yours, Bachelor of Science, The College of Arts and Sciences of xxx University.

The Commencement program listed majors.

It has been so long I barely remember. I remember for sure we didn't get the actual diploma at the ceremony. They were mailed later.

-- Junior high and high school- empty diploma holders
-- Community college- empty diploma holder
-- Bachelors degree- nothing. There was ONE graduation ceremony for the entire university held in the football stadium. No walking over the stage either. Just stand as the College of Environmental Studies was announced. Diploma was mailed to me. I had to purchase the holder separately.
-- Masters degree- didn't attend the ceremony. Diploma mailed to me. DH obtained his bachelors/masters/PhD from the same university and they received a blank holder.

As someone who has worked in higher education for the last ten years I can tell you that you won't clear for graduation until weeks after the actual ceremony. We had a date that all students needed to be cleared by and a lot of work was on on the back end by academic advisors (like myself) and the registrars office. All transfer work/study abroad credits had to often be entered manually to satisfy requirements. It was a tedious, time consuming job.

It depends on the structure of the college and the various schools and departments within the schools of the college.

My husband and I went to the same college.

My husband's says School of Engineering Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering
Mine says College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Bachelor of Arts Psychology

Engineering is in the School of Engineering and Psychology is a department within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

So in both of our cases not only is the specific school from the college listed, but also the degree and the field of study that the degree is in.

High school I got my diploma at commencement in 1990.

1993 I got my college diploma but I can't remember how. I didn't go to commencement because I wasn't finished in the 2 years. I had english type courses to finish.

I had no idea where either of them were. Then the ex wife sent them with the kids as she found them 25 years later.

I got a high school diploma. I didn't even apply for graduation in college so no diploma there! Lol

We were handed a diploma holder in high school. We got the actual diploma in the gym after turning in our rented caps gowns. My college graduation was held in the football stadium with thousands of graduates. There was no way for everyone's name to be announced. Instead, we stood up as a group while the university president waved his hand and conferred our degrees upon us. My diploma came in the mail a few weeks later. Technically, anyone could have participated in the ceremony. All you had to do was buy a cap and gown at the campus bookstore and walk down to the field. I don't recall anyone checking us in or otherwise ensuring we were eligible to be there. That was the mid-80s. I'm sure things have changed drastically since then.

I had a diploma handed to me at both my high school and college graduations. DD graduated 7 years ago in a class of 600 and she was also handed her diploma during graduation.

High school we were handed an empty holder on stage and picked up the diploma after the ceremony in a back room. College was only about 30 people so we got the actual diploma on stage.

Same as many others. For HS graduation we received an empty holder on stage and got the actual diploma after the ceremony.

College graduation was inside the basketball arena with about 2500 others. No walking on stage. College President announced each particular school and those graduates stood and waved. Diplomas were received in the mail about a month later.
