Did The Mad Hatter originally get his start as a masked character at Disneyland?

I adore learning Disneyland facts and one fact I would like to know is when Alice In Wonderland debuted was The Mad Hatter originally a masked character at Disneyland when the Alice In Wonderland characters debuted in Disneyland in the 60's? Because I know that The Mad Hatter is a face character and I never knew that there was a masked Mad Hatter in the 60's at Disneyland. Why did they decide to do away with the masked Mad Hatter and made a face character of The Mad Hatter? Also who played the first Mad Hatter face character?
