Did I do the right thing?

I was walking thru Penn Station (in NYC) today. There was a guy walking next to me and he was talking to someone on his cellphone. He was telling this person his wallet had been stolen, everything was gone. He had filed a police report, etc. but he didn't have any money to get home. I got his attention and offered to give him the money. He was thrilled, took my address and I did see him go to get his ticket. After I did it, I started to have second thoughts. I guess I'll find out if it was legit if I get paid back. But if it was true, and I did nothing, I couldn't live with myself. I think I did the right thing. I'm home by myself so I have no one else to ask.

I'm going to be totally honest with you. I would have done the same as you. I would have offered money too. I say don't feel bad about helping someone in a time of need. If he was "just" saying that to get money from someone, he has to live with that on his consious. Don't worry about the money you gave him, you will get yours in return. Whether it's from him or in another shape or form.

How much are you talking? I think it was very kind of you but certainly could've been a fake as well. I seriously doubt I would give a stranger my address however, unless it was only a mailing address like a PO box. I would rather be out the money than worry that he might come knocking.

I think you were right to give the benefit of the doubt to a stranger in need.

Sounds legit but I don't know if I would have given him my address. I am just overly paranoid that way though.

I wouldn't worry about it either way if I were you. If the guy is legit then your faith in the "goodness" of humans will be reinforced. If he is a lying sleaze bag....oh well, a good lesson was learned!

That was very nice of you to do that for him. I am sure he is very grateful. Many people like me would not have given him the money. I am just not comfortable with lending money to people that I do not know. I had fifteen dollars stolen from my wallet at school the other day and I know how it is to have no money. It was very nice of you though and you should feel that you have done a good deed. Good for you!

Well, if it was just a little bit to get home, I'd have done the same thing, only NOT given out my address (unless I had a PO Box, which I don't). I'd tell him to do something nice for someone else next time.

BUT, anything over $10, I wouldn't have. We did it once before, and got taken for a ride (DH gave a guy $50 for car repairs. Money never came so he called the phone # the guy had given us...it was his ex-wife who informed us he was an addict who pulled this stunt several times a week, and she was sorry we got taken, and she was sick and tired of getting these calls!)

So if it's an amount I'd want paid back, I don't do it any more. Sad, but true. If I won't miss it, I help out. Otherwise, I can't afford to get taken.

I also think you did the right thing and you shouldn't second guess yourself. You did what you felt was right and I am sure alot of people wouldnt have bothered to help him

YES, you did the right thing and good for you for not being so jaded to allow suspicion to keep you from helping someone you felt was truly in need. There are never too many people who will help others.

If you never see a dime back, you can commend yourself for being a good person, if he was a fake...well, he has to live with that. You can lay your head down at night with a clear conscience.

I am not sure I would have given him my address, but I guess it depends on gut feeling at the time.

I think that was a really nice thing to do! Sadly, someone asked me to help one time and I honestly didn't have anything to spare at that moment.......I felt it was legitimate but still wasn't able to help.

I can't imagine having the need and finding people unwilling to help me......you did a GOOD THING.

I would have done the same thing, except I wouldn't have given him my address. just me being paranoid. let us know if you end up getting the money back! it was a very nice thing to do.

DONT worry about if he was not telling the truth , you did it because you wanted to . There is nothing wrong with helping others !
