Did Disney create the bee mascot for the Fresno and Modesto Bee newspapers in the 60's?

I read that when the Modesto and Fresno Bee newspapers were designing a bee mascot as a way to attract readers Disney created the bee mascot in the 60's and I would like to know more on this story? I never knew that Walt Disney could design characters for other things besides cartoons and movies and when I learned this fact I never knew Disney liked to create ideas for other things
