I just put my DH and DD8 on Delta out of MCO. We had to go to the counter to check in because they needed a seat change on second leg. DH had one of the big suitcases that max's the size restrictions. He didn't have much in it as we were only away for 5 days. The bag came in at 52 pounds. After the woman at the counter finished freaking my DD8 out because she said there was nothing she could do about getting DD8 seat changed so she could sit next to her father, she proceeded to scold us for being 2 pounds overweight. My first thought was, ok, when's the last time the scale has been calebrated. My second thought and the one I voiced to my DH was, Ok, take the bible out of the suitcase and carry it. In the end, it was only a scolding, but she lead us to believe they keep track of your overweight bags and if you have to many, they'll nab you in the future. I'm seriously considering downsizing though. Less opportunity to pack a lot.
