DHHIR Family Reunion 7/31-8/7/09- a great time had by MOST! Final Updates 10/16 p.8

Hey! How do you like OC? We've never been , but have heard it's got a fantastic boardwalk.:thumbsup2

We have a place in north Ocean City-practically in Delaware. We have a beautiful beach and love our neighborhood, but I would stay in Rehobeth or Bethany Beach in De rather than OC. Much more family oriented and Rehobeth has a great little boardwalk. Great restaurants. Downtown OC has become a little sleazy over the years-IMO, anyway!

Wow Ellen what a fantastic report!! I know we discussed some of it at lunch but with the pictures it just all comes together.

Now I really want to go!

Yea-I told you! It's a great and beautiful place! :thumbsup2

I've been to Rehoboth twice now for baseball with the kids- lots of fun! Lucky you, to have a beach house! It was our dream for a long time- but if we had one, I don't know when we would even use it at this point because of all the kid sports. But, there's always that nice place to dream about called SOMEDAY......:)

Great Update Ellen !! Ho Ho Ho!!!!! Loved the Maze story !!!:lmao:

Merry Christmas, Rosie!! HOE HOE HOE!!!:rotfl:

Ellen! Your update was worth waiting for as usual.:thumbsup2 Your family really knows how to have fun, will you adopt me! :lmao: I loved your pool party. The beach maze was aMAZEing! The pics were so fun to see all those people joining in the fun. I'm sure it was very rewarding for the couple who created it, too!:cool1:

I just happened to stumble upon your trip report ( which is great by the way:thumbsup2). My family went to DHHI in 2007 and had a blast!! We will definately go again. Thanks for sharing your trip, it brings great memories from ours!!:goodvibes

While we were gone, the rest of the family had bbq'd right outside of the villa, and a bunch of them had gone over to Magic in the Den with B'Lou Crabbe (which one of my nephews really liked because he learned a new magic trick).

By the time we got back, they were all hanging out-

At 8pm we went over to hear Ghosts and Legends of the Low Country which was being told by B'Lou Crabbe. It wasn't really very scary, although the activity sheet says it may not be suitable for kids under 10. :confused3

Soon after it was time to call it a night...DH & I and boys were golfing at Golden Bear in the morning, and to be honest, I was looking forward to the break from hearing my SIL whisper behind my back when I walked out of the room. :sad2: It was exhausting.

Next- the four of us have a GREAT time on the golf course!!! Our first time as a foursome!!!:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:

Sure we'll adopt you!! :goodvibes That pool party is sooooooooo much fun. But my BIL STILL thinks he could have done a better job. :sad2: It makes me crazy STILL!!!! :headache: He actually spent 20 minutes complaining about it to his brothers a few weeks ago. Who does that?

The man of the maze was SPECTACULAR!! And it was really cool to see all the people running around doing it- people were at it all day.

Thank-you! :goodvibes And we will definitely go again, too! I am really going to miss being there next summer. :sad1: I think I would love to go for Thanksgiving or New Years someday. It sounds like a great way to spend those holidays, doesn't it?

the photos make feel warm and toasty on a cold snowy day. I can't believe they are still commenting on the pool party. Some people are never satisfied.

Ellen -

I have NO idea how I missed this TR, but it is really amazing. Not only am I reading it without pictures, but I am learning so much about all the things to do at HHI. I wanted to go before, but now I REALLY want to go. I think you planned an amazing trip and I can't wait to look at all the pictures. It is so cool that your MIL had such a great time. Way to go.

I can't believe your SIL was so...uhm....how do I put it......oh, well never-mind! :rotfl: I think she's just jealous because she can't pull together a trip of this magnitude. :rolleyes1

REally looking forward to the pictures and the rest of the story.

It's SNOWING?????? Oh NO!!!!! It was cold here today, but it was in the upper 40's. UGH... well, Joan just told me we're supposed to have a mild winter, so maybe this will be most of what you get!

Yes, my MIL really loved it there. She thought it was beautiful and perfect. I was so glad!! And actually, my SIL could most definitely put a big trip together- probably MUCH better than I could. She is very, very organized and she has extraordinarily creative ideas- but I think she's in a big funk right now and also that they have some preferences (like not wanting anyone else around) that are the opposite of what all of us wanted or thought was necessary. And I think they want everything their way. No compromising. And THAT does not work on a group vacation. It's EVERYONE'S vacation- everyone is entitled to do whatever it is that makes them happy, right?

Ok, enough of that- tomorrow, I'm posting about Tyler & Timmy's EXCELLENT golf adventure! :yay:

Thanks Ellen! My long lost sista! :lmao: I can't believe your BIL - give it a rest already. :headache: Actually I do know who does that. We tried to have some family reunion type things in our family for a couple of years - it was a heart felt wish of our cousin who died unexpectedly. We tried for awhile, but someone was always complaining about the location, the price, etc. etc. I was one of the planners, and it just got to be too much heartache for me. We also tried it just in our immediate family with my sibs and rents. Same story. First year at a cabin on the lake, my DSIS went home early cuz there were spiders.:scared1: Second year, Cabin in the woods, she went home early cuz there were ANTS IN THE BATHROOM! :scared1: Third year, camping - my DSIL was *****ing all weekend cuz she didn't like camping and my mom wouldn't let muddy kids in her trailer (my parents worry too much about their "stuff") 4th year, beautiful resort - my other DIS complain cuz it's too nice :confused3 I'm done. So we haven't had another reunion again. Everyone got a clue when Dad had a stroke last December, but I don't see anyone planning another trip.

Good luck with your family! :goodvibes

Scary stories and golf. See if I had been there I could have made a scarier story out of me trying to golf. :rotfl: I would have had them all not able to sleep for fear of the rogue golf ball!

And good luck with yours! That's funny about the SIS who complained about it being too nice. :rotfl: So maybe you need to have a luxury condo for the one and a pup tent for the other one! How exhausting!!

Not to worry- I provide that fear for people as well! :thumbsup2 :lmao:

On Thursday morning, we were out the door, just the four of us, for 9 holes of golf at Golden Bear. The concierge at the resort had booked this for us, and during our stay this was one of the only courses that would allow 9 holes of play (last year we had played 9 holes across the street at Palmetto Dunes, but that wasn't available this time). What was REALLY exciting (and a little nerve-racking, to be sure!) was that this would be Timmy's (DS10) first time on a real golf course. So it was also the first of what I hope will be many times we golfed together as a family. Now, I had planned to put myself and the DSs into the $30 golf lessons offered this year at the resort. But I did NOT because of the b******* that was going on about the activities taking away from family time (FWIW, I have learned my lesson- I will do whatever I want on the next year, they can stick it!):rotfl: So what that meant was that I was stinkin' it up BIG TIME out there!! :rotfl2: Because I hadn't golfed since the year before, and I couldn't remember how to even hold a club! Still, we had a great time, the course was in a lovely area and the boys did very, very well. Poor Pods was a little exhausted though by the end of 9 holes- it's hard to caddy for 3 golf-idiots...I mean people! :rotfl: And not to worry- the course was very empty, we did not hold up any other golfers ( we would have let them play through if we had). Some pics-

It was a LOT of fun, and the best part was that DS10 did so well his first time (he gets a little cranky when he doesn't golf well), it was just a wonerful morning.

Next up- back to the beach!!

Ellen, your golf game looks so fun! It's great that you have a family activity that you can all do together. We've watched Happy Gilmore probably a 100 times! All the guys in my family love it:thumbsup2

I so want to learn how to golf. Everyone in my family has joked for years that I shouldn't because I have a mean slap shot and I might not hit the ball in the right direction. They say i could be happy gilmore--without the improvement.

Anyway looks great!

Yea- HG is a funny, funny movie. And I just actually said that to the kids on Saturday- about being able to always golf together. We did a pitch & putt on Saturday (inbetween a football run-through and a baseball game!!) and we had so much fun! Then yesterday I took them to the driving range- Tim didn't do as well so that was NOT as pleasant. But we are all improving- well, especially me, and i needed it the most!:goodvibes

A couple of years ago I took some semi-private lessons with a friend- and then after HHI, I took a private lesson with the same guy before I went away to golf at WDW with DH (which cost $120 as opposed to the $30 the HHI lesson would have cost...:headache:) and it helped a LOT. It is a great sport to learn, because EVERYONE can play, and I like it alot. You should give it a (slap) shot! Happy Gilmore or not!:)

Back at the villa, we got ready for our last full day of fun in the sun of HHI. We stopped over at the Big Dipper Pool for some lunch at Tide me Over (I love that tuna sandwich!!) before heading over on our bikes to the beach. Today's activities-

2009_080706summer0487.jpg

Then a bunch of us rode over to the beach house one last time. The bike ride over to the beach is actually very pleasant, primarily because of several factors- well marked bike paths, flat ground (except for going under the road or that big hill on the way back!) and most important of all- ABUNDANT GORGEOUS COOL SHADE!!!!! :thumbsup2 (I really missed that shae on the bike ride I just took in Vero Beach, but that's another TR for another day. :goodvibes)

The DVC's best maze creator had been at it again, and the beach was very grateful! Captain Amazing is the guy in the orange swim suit witht the hoe-

The kids were feeling their creativity, too, and once again made a minigolf course. Today they were running up to other kids on the beach and asking them if they wanted to try it out- very cool!

A fisherman was hauling in a large stingray that was putting up quite a fight, and everyone ran down to be a part of it-

And a para-surfer went by- that impressed everyone, too!

My SILs had decided to finish up the refrig food for dinner, but we needed just a few more things to have another BBQ. So they told me what they needed, and I left the beach to hit the Piggly Wiggly for some odds & ends. Sadly, the one thing not on the list was MORE CHARCOAL, so I didn't know they needed it. (Actually, neither did they until we tried grilling later!) Oh well. While I was gone, the kids made another game in the sand, something like skee ball-

See you soon for our last night!

I looked at half your pictures last night and they were so fun. The resort looks so beautiful and the Grand Villa is amazing! My fav picture so far is you and the giant black boots. :rotfl: Wow - there is so much to do there. What a great place to vacation. I can't wait to go someday!!!!

p.s. I hear ya about the no shade in Vero. I thought I was going to drop dead the first morning I went out running. I didn't know I could sweat so much!

I just found your trip report recently and I am loving it. We were at HH in late July. Your pictures bring back great memories of really fun times. I love seeing the cast members who are so familiar. I am hoping to try the bikes out soon. Our youngest just turned 3 so we were thinking we weren't quite ready for that yet. We love the pool party and all the activities though. A really wonderful, relaxing vacation.

Looking forward to the rest of your report.
