DH had his back surgery!

He had a microlumbar discectomy yesterday. When the surgeon got in there he found what he suspected and also found a "fresh herniation". Surgery was at 10:00 and we were HOME by 2:30. He got immediate relief from the pain that has been going down his leg all the way into his foot! He is sore from the incision, so he still has some pain- but that should subside.

It really is amazing what they can do now!

That was my first spinal surgery too. Just tell him that even though he will feel great, he needs to take it slow and do everything he is told for as long as the doctor tells him. You feel really good and do stuff you were told not to do and then you find out the hard way that you've screwed things up!

Can you tell me more about his injury? DH has 2 bulging and torn discs and has the pain/numbness/tingling feeling down both legs.
the discs effects L3-L4 and L4-L5

He is out for 6 weeks- this was last resort, he has tried EVERYTHING! We are hoping this does it.

He's being good Linda- so far anyway!

DH has done just about everything too and nothing works anymore. the shots were the worst, it made the pain even worse.

6 weeks isn't to bad. Does he have to wear a brace? MIL did when she had her surgery.

Nope no braces! He has staples, but the incision is very small. It is covered with one of those 3x4 bandaids.

This is a relatively minor procedure.......and does not require a cast or brace. It's done on an outpatient basis. Once a person is given the "ok" by their doctor, they REALLY need to start stregthening their core muscles. This may prevent a reoccurence (which happens alot) in the same spot.

If they do too much too soon, or are 10% of the population (that's me!) the disc will re-herniate. Much more invasive surgery this time. Spinal fusion. THAT "recovery" time can be 8+ months and some doctors do use braces (mine did not).

Again, I urge caution! You immediately feel SO much better, it is so easy to do things you are not supposed to cause you don't feel any pain. I wish your hubby a CAREFUL and sucessful recovery!
