During our last trip (6/15 - 23) we were at the MK one day in Tomorrowland. The kids (DD4 & DS8) were having fun interacting with the talking trash can. When i went to stand next to DH he informed me where the guy was who was operating the trash can. At the same time the two of us looked over and the guy noticed it. Then out of the trash can came - "ok Mr. smarty pants with the tall socks!" (DH is one of those geeks who still wears the chuck converse high-top sneakers AND argyle socks up to his knees...he's an engineer, what can I say? :) ) The kids thought it was the funniest thing because they knew the trash can was talking about their Dad. Unfortuanately, the guy left not too long after that - probably afraid that we would spill his secret. (we wouldn't have)

The kids don't know how or why the trash can was talking to their Dad and we won't tell them. It's bad enough that already they tell us that the characters aren't real and they are only people dressed up in costume.. :( (but they still get their pictures taken)

so funny...

That's too funny. Those trash cans really confuse people. We love standing real far back and watching the operator (discreetly, of course). It's amazing how much fun he has and how he remains so unobtrusive.

What a funny memory you made :teeth: I'll bet the kids never forget this.

where does the operator usually stand?

Unless you are looking for them they are hard to find. I remember a few years back in the AK we saw the operator. He was easier to notice because he had to carry a bag with the equipment around. Now they have less to carry. DH noticed him because it looked like he was talking into his armpit.....where the microphone distorted his voice.

I still laugh when i think of that moment....ok mr. smarty pants! :)

That is hilarious. I hope you got a pic of your dh that day then you can put "Mr. Smarty pants with tall socks" under it in the photo album. It would make a cute way to remember that day.

OMG I've never done this....They talk TO you? I always thought it was automated. John-Cole would freak!!

Okay tell me where to go! I have to do this in September!

Hang out in Tomorrow land around Mickey Star Traders, You may even ask someone in there if they know when they will be out.

Sometimes the kids around will kick it and the trash can will reprimand them. So funny to see the look on their faces when the trash can "yells" at them and then describes what they are wearing.

One time when I saw the trash can, there were these two adorable little blond girls wearing matching Minnie Mouse dresses following it around, looking inside it. The trash can said, "Oh, you two must come from the same factory." I still laugh when I think about that one.

oh no, no, no! I didn't mean operator! It's all magic! :)

The "controllers" of the trash cans and the tree (Wes Palm -- he tried to get me to "leaf" my husband and go with him to AK) are very good at what they do. Sure they carry equipment, but so do plenty of other people (backpacks, shoulder bags, camcorders, etc). And they certainly blend in with the rest of the crowd. A very talented bunch.

HEY, HEY, watch the engineer jokes there!! I wouldn't be caught wearing that outfit.:)

We were at AK and here comes this trash can who asks us to open the door so that he could go outside. Neither Pete or I had ever heard of the talking trash can so we were stunned. He then proceeded to a line up with some regular trash cans (he hummed all the way over) and parked himself. Whenever someone would come up and throw something away he would BURP real loud and say thank you! :teeth: He would say things like "Mmmm...juice box". Too funny! You should have seen the look on Pete's face (and mine too!). We always try to look for him when we go to WDW. Pete got his autograph last time (he had us trace one of his "feet" in Pete's book!) :teeth:

THAT'S IT!!! You guys have decided for me. When I retire, I am going to be the trash can/tree operator at Disney. MY NEW DREAM JOB!! I am so excited. Let's see...only 39 years, 9 months, 5 days until my "projected" retirement day...

... or so he says! ;)

And for anyone who wants to keep an eye out for Wes over at AK, here's some pictures:

She was only 4 at the time (April 2002; Bonnie was 6) but she still remembers the experience of talking (and flirting!) with him and especially dancing with him! She was really taken with him! :teeth:

The trash can says he is my DD's boy friend - she talks about it a lot.

Who the guy with the camera bad, in the red shirt, talking to his thumb in the background? :)
