I got up at 3:00am and left Bruce in bed until I had finished getting ready, as Bruce had to drive us to Heathrow with only 4 hours sleep. Bruce got up at 3:35am. We packed our last few bits which we could not pack due to using our smellies in the morning.

We left our house at 04:05. We arrived at our off site parking at 05:10 and was quite surprised how quick our journey was. By the time we checked our car in and boarded the bus the roads around heathrow was getting busy. We were quite relieved that we left when we did. We finally arrived at terminal 4 around 6:00am and we went straight to the BA bag drop off. We were shocked at how quick and easy it was. This is the first we have checked in online and this is the way to go in the future, especially having kids with us in our future holidays. I was pleased no delays and our seats we had chosen were a 2 and not a 3. So I did not need to worry about bothering the other person, when I wanted to use the loo. So I thought..................

We lined up in departures and I was trying to see who had been in the Airport show, Bruce thought I was sad, because they are not famous. Yet I was still trying to pick them out. I did not care, as I had not flown from Heathrow before and I was getting rather excited. We waited for around 15 minutes until we got through customs. As per usual I was searched. I had a metal piece on my top, which holds it together. I must remember to think about what to wear i.e no metal bits on any of my clothes

We had a look around a few shops before we had breakfast, but they did not really appeal to us. We tried to find a McDonalds, but we could not find McDonalds, so we settled for an overpriced croissant and toast. I had a black coffee and Bruce had hot chocolate it came to around £7.00  After our light breakfast we looked around a few shops and bought a toothbrush, rennies and some calming tablets, as Bruce hates flying. We had a sit down, but I went through to the smoking area, while Bruce sat and dozed. I was feeling anxious about leaving the kids, so I needed something to calm my nerves. After I had my calming therapy BA announced the gate 1B. When we arrived at the gate BA announced that thier computer systems were down so they can not board the plane. Finally at 09:20 they announced that the plane was ready for boarding. BA did not call by seat numbers, but instead everyone scrambled throught the gate to find we had to board a bus, as the plane had been changed. So I thought ohh!! will it be our two configuration. By this point it looked like we would be taking off at 10:00 supposed to 09:10. Okay we can handle that. When we boarded the plane I found out we had a three configuration. I was not to pleased, because if I had known that I would of asked for an isle seat. Never mind cant be helped. Duley noted for next time. We all sat down and the plane started to approach the runway at 10:00, but the plane in front of us had broken down and we had to wait for the plane to be collected, because it cant reverse :headache: by this point we were so eager to get going that this did not go down too well. 10:30 we finally took off YAY we are on our way :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:

Take off was pretty smooth, until we had hit an air pocket and the plane dropped :scared: We loved the seats in BA so comfortable and it was only economy. The food was dissapointing. It was a choice of fish :yuk: or mixed grill, which was a small steak, cheesy scrambled egg, mushrooms and hash browns. It was all soggy and tasted vile. After the dinner I felt a little queasy  for a while. I prefer VA food so far, but prefered the seats in BA. The passengers in front of us, was getting on mine and the crews nerves. She was rather rude to the cabin crew before we took off. Then they kept fully reclining thier chair for take off and landing. We had to tell them to put thier chair back and again when we were eating. The lady in front was bashing around in her chair. I wanted to say cant you sit still for 5 minutes.

We finally arrived and we waited in line at immigration. When we were called they had complete blank straight serious faces. They made you scared and felt guilty even though you were innocent. They kept scanning my passport and asking me the same questions and then they called someone over. My tummy starts to do cartwheels thinking I have not done anything, whats going on when the lady said when we arrived at MCO in 2005 I got my finger prints the wrong way around my left was my right etc.... They called me in to the back office where people were waiting to be interviewed by immigration. They called me over and they let me through. Oh my god was that scary and I felt like a complete fool as well. I was so embarrased  Bruce thought it was hillarious, so he text people to let them know what had happened. The joke was on me. I could of buried myself in a big hole. :sad2:

We decided to use the trains to get us into Manhatten. We needed to get the airtrain to Newark Liberty Train station and then the amtrack to Penn Station New York. When we arrived we walked out of Penn station I said to Bruce lets look at the map and get our bearings. Bruce said look over there, as I turned my head I could see the Empire State Building and all the sky scrapers. All I kept saying was wow I was so impressed and loved the city already.

We walked upto the hotel, whilst looking at all the sky scrapers. They looked like they were drawings, by the way they stood. We checked into our hotel and was really pleased with the hotel so far. Location was excellent. 5 mins to Empire State, At the end of your street was Macys and 15 mins to Times Square. We headed out to Empire State Building so we could see the city at dusk

After Empire State Building we got a taxi to Times Square. We were feeling quite tired by now, but really wanted to see Times Square. We got out of the taxi and walked to end of 44th street between 6th and 7th Avenue. Oh my god were we amazed. It looked fantastic. It beats Picadilly circus hands down. Even looking at the Times Square web cam it does not not look exactly the same. Its so pretty and amazing. We were having a fantastic time already. We were so shocked how warm it was.

We had dinner at Planet Hollywood. It was a really nice meal. I had chicken fajitas, Bruce had pizza, 2 cocktails, 1 coke, 1 beer and cheesecake to share came to $78.51. I told Bruce that I had booked a surprise helicoptor tour and it was booked for tomorrow at 10:00am he was so pleased. We decided to head back to the hotel to get some sleep for an early start in the morning. A great day so far.

fab start Michelle, you certainly did a lot on your first day - I'm impressed! which hotel did you stay in? and what did you think of it?
Those piccies really took me back -I really must go again soon, I keep promising Callum I'll take him so I'm going to get a move on and do some research!

A great day, Michelle, apart from having to sit in a three on the plane. I hate that too, feel like I shouldn't get up even though you can't help it. I would like to know which hotel you stayed in as well, please, I have been struggling to see where would be best for us to stay in NY as the layout seems so confusing when you haven't been before. Thanks :goodvibes

What a good start to your trip. We went to Planet Hollywood in New York just to pick up a glass and did not eat. It looks like you had a great first day. Looking forward to hearing more.

Hi

We stayed in Hotel Metro 35th Street. The reason we liked this hotel, because we had a tube station if you were too tired to walk at the end of your street to Times Square and other places. Macys was at the end of our street and when the roof top bar is open you can see Empire State Buiilding. Lit up at night. It looks beautiful. Times square is 7-8 streets away, but it isnt far. Streets are easy enough to walk its blocks i.e avenues that can take a while if you were on fifth avenue and wanted to get to 7th or 8th it may take a while. If your getting a cab make sure the traffice is pointing in the right direction you want to go otherwise it will cost more having to go down the avenue and turn off one of the streets to come back on yourself. We saw Hotel Novotel I think it is called they are close to Times Square, but in my opinion I prefered where we stayed. Your not too far to walk to the hussle and bussle and it can get quite noisy and considering Times Square does not sleep you might not get any either. I would recommend asking for a room at the back of your hotel away from any streets. Hotel Metro you wont get any views from your room, because of the heights of the buildings around it, but you can in spring and summer sit at the top of the resturant seeing empire state and other views. The breakfast was a bonus to us. We were able to get an early bfast and get started straight away and pretty much not eat until the evening or have a small snack.

If you want any more info ask away. I will try and write up next days later on or Sat. I was tired when I got in last night from work.

Michelle, you are a star! Thanks for all the really helpful information. If I think of any more questions, I will send you a PM. :goodvibes

Great start Michelle - I've always wanted to visit NY - just add it to the list :rotfl:

thank you for sharing
great start

Great start, love the photos. :goodvibes

I stayed at the Novotel when I went and it is right on Times Sq but they have the most brilliant double glazing and black out curtains and you can't hear the traffic or noise at all. I would def recommend staying there, we had an amazing view of Times Sq and you are right in the middle of everything. After reading your reports I really want to go back again!

I was gobsmacked when I walked into Times Square, I hadnt expected it to be so close to my hotel so was shocked when I turned two corners and it was right there!

:)
