We're planning DCL Alaska 2017 (maybe... if they ever release it). We're both teachers with a bit of time our hands in the summers. I'm wondering if anyone has driven to Vancouver from the east side of the US. If so, is it better to cross into Canada as soon as possible (North Dakota), or better to take the northern-most route across the US and cross over near Seattle? I've done the i-80 route to CA... would rather never do that again. Thanks for your tips in advance.

It is probably cheaper to drive as far as you can in the US because gas is usually more expensive in Canada. You can map out hotels on different routes along the way and compare prices. Food is pretty similarly priced. If you want to see something different, I say go through Canada and just absorb the extra gas price. Depending on your mileage, the gas cost may not be that much anyway.

We drove from chicago to Vancouver a few years ago. We ultimately ended up on Vancouver island. We drove up thru South Dakota and Uo to Wyoming through Yellowstone and then up through montana thru glacier into Canada. We went to Banff and Up to Jackson and then across BC. But instead of heading into Vancouver we went north and came down through whistler to get to Vancouver. It was a glorious trip. From Vancouver we drove south to annacortes to get the ferry into the San Juan islands and then to Vancouver island and Victoria, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We drove out to visit our grand daughter who was going to boarding school on Vancouver island. Coming back we were running out of time and once we got back into Washington state we just booked it home. But if you have lots of time consider heading south to the coast of Oregon which is incredible and then heading east through Reno or Vegas, Arizona with all its wonderful sites, etc. we could easily spend two or three months driving around the west.

Now I want to go on a road trip! Thanks for helping me start my day with beauty.

We are driving but not as far as you would. We are in Cody Wyoming. Love going thru the mountains and some outstanding place to visit. There is so much to see in the country I would drive thru it.
