Ok, here's what I've figured. It's roughly 1200 miles one-way for us to drive. If I estimate 20 miles to the gallon (I drive a Ford Edge), that's 60 gallons of gas, right? I think I'm looking at 3-4 fill-ups. Am I right? Trying to budget and this $4/gallon price is killing me.

Yep, that's about right. Hope for some good tail winds!

However, when you look at airfare, the savings are huge, even more with each extra person you bring. DW and I are driving down in a few weeks. 2500 miles round trip and budgeting $500 for travel (gas and 2 hotels nights). Airfare would have been ~$900. To help save $$, we are bringing a small cooler for lunches and snacks. Healthier and cheaper than road side eateries.

In the end, if we plan well and have a wonderful relaxing time, we will remember the trip and not the extra $120 we had to pay in gas because Wall Street speculators are allowed to artificially manipulate fair market price. (The following was a paid opinion).

I like to use www.costtodrive.com. You can put in the make of your vehicle and everything. I think it calcuated about $190 for us to drive our Edge from Lansing it WDW (one-way).

We used this website last time we drove and it was right on.

Thanks! I hate flying so, driving was the only option for us. We've budgeted $1000 for the transportation back and forth. This jump in gas prices had me a bit worried.

I'm going to check out that link! Thanks for sharing.

If if helps any I had four fill ups coming and going with a full size Chevy Silverado pick up truck. I would drive from the Detroit area to Orlando.

There are discount coupons for lodging at the welcome centers in TN and GA too. Or most places take a AAA card.

But flying can be a lot cheaper than the above pp stated. I'm paying $250.00 rt on AirTran.

I also compared gasbuddy.com and costtodrive.com.
I rather fly but we are also looking into driving since flight tix are so high right now.

What a cool website! I just tried it and it was pretty accurate for a trip that I just made from Detroit to Indianapolis.

Remember that you may end up getting better millage since all of your driving will be on interstate highways and at fairly constant speeds. So if you normally get 20mpg driving around at home, you may end up getting 28-30mpg for straight highway driving.
