My dh cousins daughter is planning a destination wedding this coming september in vermont. There has been some family tension/separation but the young cousin bride...chose to ask my dd17 to be in the wedding.....we said yes...because we have nothing against this young girl and we do value family despite the rift.......

well i was just checking hotel rates....OMG why did I not think about that first.....peak fall foliage time in Vermont!!!!

It will cost us about 700.00 to stay at a best western for 2 nights.....more if we stay at wedding hotel....and that does not include gas/food money!!!!

And then a wedding gift on top of it all!!!

aggghhhhh

Where in Vermont? That seems high, even for foliage season. Maybe there are cheaper rooms in area towns.

Rutland VT

I have only checked 2 of the hotels that the bridal couple listed.....and I guess that this was not a good week to check...with christmas expenses ..i am having sticker shock......

If you pay so much to attend a destination wedding... are you still as generous with the wedding gift? This is the first destination wedding i have been invited to......

No it doesn't. We spent a lot more than that a few years ago for a wedding the first weekend of October in the Stowe area.

OP--the problem with Rutland is that there aren't a ton of hotels in the town to begin with--try Killington about ten miles away, that time of the year you should be able to find something in the $100-150 range at a hampton or COmfort or something along those lines. You can also look into private ski condo rentals for the weekend at Killington.

As far as a gift, I have never based the amount of the gift on where I have to travel to or how much the reception cost. It was a gift. Sometimes brides having destination weddings will request no gift, but if they don't then a "regular" gift is in order IMHO.

Where are the bride and groom from that they are considering it a destination wedding?

Check out www.hotels.com for some hotels in that area. You can also see if priceline is getting any good deals in that area.

You've forgotten about your DD's dress for the wedding, the shower expenses, etc. This is going to be an expensive weekend for you no matter how you slice it. You may as well start stashing away so much per week now so it doesn't hit you all at once.

Godspeed!

You should really check out travelocity for some rates. I just did and there's a wide range. Also, that really isn't quite peak leaf season (though it should be somewhat colorful)yet. You would have to go a little further north for that.

Thanks all!
I am calling it a destination wedding.....the families are all from NJ including both bride /groom.......Trust me if we could not drive we would not be going.

We are a family of five..

according to the actual Inn that the wedding is at ...it is a peak rate......

i will have to investigate more after the holidays....I will check both of the suggested web pages.

Ducklite , you are right....I have of course attended family weddings in Pa and never gave less because of added expenses..... but i only had to stay one night at a hotel....this is a bit more involved....but you are correct....like I said I just had a moment of panic!!! ( I must confess...the family history is affecting my emotions right now also......)

Hi! my DH used to live in VT and I am here to tell you that those rates are outrageous even during foilage. Keep looking!!! Good luck!

Another thought OP--it it's a day time wedding, after the reception, leave town and drive south to the Albany area for the night--it's only about 75 minutes and hotels will be a lot less expensive.

$350 a night at a Best Western all because the leaves are changing colors? :confused3 I have trees in my backyard that change colors. What gives? Is there something else?

Its a totally different experience than fall in st. louis. trust me, I used to live in st. louis, and live in new england now. autumn is incredible here.

to the op, I agree with the other posters who said to look outside of the town the wedding is in. I really like the ski condo idea, but there are a ton of inns and hotels that should be much more reasonable. good luck!

thanks for all of the great suggestions! i will keep looking......

Peak foliage in my area of VT is Columbus Day weekend, but the leaves change a little earlier in the Killington/Rutland region.

The White River Junction area of Vermont is about 45 minutes East of Rutland, and you might be able to find something cheaper here. You are right, there are not many places to stay in Rutland, but keep looking. And stay away from the Red Roof Inn, it is disgusting.

This is one of the reasons I don't like destination weddings. They add greatly to the cost for guests to attend. Others might not be able to travel etc.
