So my DD went to the dentist on wed and had a filling done. they did the numbing stuff to her. today is fri - 2 days later and when she smiles, her smile is still not back to normal on one side. Is this normal? I've had plenty of fillings in my life but don't remember it ever taking this long to get back to normal.

I'm not a dentist but I could imagine that the novocaine was injected in a place where it was particularly effective. Personally, I wouldn't worry until a week or more after the procedure and it still hadn't worn off completely.

Does it still feel numb to her or is it just in her smile that you notice?

She doesn't really notice much...her talking, eating, etc are ok. She said its a little sore still (probably from the needle) but its really just her smile that I notice.

It's possible that she is not smiling right because it is sore, not because it is still numb. Give her some Tylenol and check her smile in a couple hours and see if it is better.

Call them and let them now. Is she eating ok? They may have you wait a day or two longer but at least they know there is a concern.

I had a filling done, my first as an adult, had many as a kid, and I developed a hematoma (sp) and could not open my mouth all the way and it felt weird to chew. They put me on strong anitinflammatories and kept an eye on it. About a week later I was fine. Dentist said it was rare but it does happen.

I agree. It could be because it is sore rather than from the novocaine.

I would let the dentist know either way.

I am apparently sensitive to Novocaine, because it takes that stuff FOREVER to wear off for me (although not until the next day), and also I am terribly sore from the shot for several days. I find I can't eat anything for 3-4 days after Novocaine. So, I've started getting only Nitrous Oxide for fillings, and wow what a difference. As soon as the procedure is over, I have no pain at all! I'm DONE! The small amount of pain I feel durng the procedure is very preferable to being unable to even drink water for 6-8 hours afterwards and then being on basically a liquid diet for 3 days.

If I do have something done where it's not really possible to go without Novocaine, I ask them to use a smaller dose, and that helps too.
