Dentist Accused of Killing Orthodontist Hubby

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas dentist has been charged with killing her orthodontist husband by repeatedly running over him with her Mercedes Benz, police say.

The couple had been arguing in a Houston hotel before the alleged attack on Wednesday night in which David Harris, 44, was struck three times as he tried to get into his own car, they said.

Clara Harris, 44, told reporters after she was arrested: "It was an accident."

Police said Thursday she told investigators she suspected her husband had been cheating and hired a private investigator who called her to the hotel to confirm it.

"She has admitted hiring a private investigation firm to follow her husband around. So there is some type of history," Nassau Bay Police Department spokesman Joe Cashiola told reporters.

The husband's 16-year-old daughter from a previous marriage was in the Mercedes with her step mother as the incident unfolded, police said.

The couple had separate dental practices and lived in a large home in an affluent Houston suburb, according to news reports.

A photo of the pair taken in happier times and posted on the Internet showed both had perfect smiles.

A dentist accused of running over her husband several times and parking her Mercedes-Benz on his body was ordered today to have no contact with the woman she thought was having an affair with her husband.

State District Judge Carol Davies said Clara Harris' $30,000 bond would be revoked if she tried to contact the woman or went within 200 feet of the woman's home or business.

Harris is charged with murder in the death of her husband David Lynn Harris. Davies found there was probable cause to hold Harris on the charge.

Clara Harris appeared in court Friday dressed in a stylish black pants suit with her hair neatly swept back at the nape of her neck.

It was quite a different appearance from the angry woman witnesses said confronted David Harris and Gail Bridges, a woman who used to work for the orthodontist, at the Nassau Bay Hilton Wednesday night.

Prosecutor Mia Magness told Davies that Clara Harris went to the hotel and confronted her husband and Bridges in the lobby. An altercation ensued and the three were escorted outside by hotel employees.

In the parking lot David Harris walked the woman to her vehicle as Clara Harris got into her silver Mercedes-Benz then plowed the car into David Harris, propelling his body 25 feet, Magness said.

Magness said Clara Harris then crossed over two grassy medians and ran over her husband three more times before putting the car into reverse and backing over his body and leaving the car parked on him.

Magness said David Harris' teen-age daughter was in the car with Clara Harris.

Heard this news story on the radio today, too. Hell hath no fury....

"Accidentally" ran him over THREE times.

It is disgusting that she brought her 16 year-old daughter into this as well. I heard them say this was her daughter from a previous marriage and they had young twin sons together.

No, it was the husband's daughter! How sick can people be?!

This case has been discussed on the news and radio shows extensively here in Houston. The fact that the wife had his daughter in the car tends to negate this being a premediated murder in that most people do not drag their kids (or step kids) to a planned homocide. I definitetly feel very sorry for the poor girl. What a horrible thing to have to watch.

TLK, yes Houston justice is very strange. Andrea Yates was clearly nuts and was denied bail and wife in this case was given a fairly light bail.

I heard this on the radio coming home from work today.

Her defense is, um, pretty strange. It was an ACCIDENT that she ran over him 3 times, then PARKED THE CAR ON TOP OF HIM?????



And that $30,000 would be about what that Mercedes cost, right?
