Does anyone know if you can purchase the comfort= seats once you have booked flights using a "free companion voucher"? My understanding is there are no "free" upgrades. But if I'm paying extra, is it allowed?

Yes you should be able to you will just have to pay for the comfort seats. I use my free companion voucher and have comfort seats but usually book it all to start with.

Actually "Comfort Plus" is now a new booking category, it's no longer just an upgraded seat.

So you would probably need to book in that category from the beginning.

The companion voucher is only able to be used to purchase "main" cabin seating, not Comfort Plus.

At the time of my ticket purchase, comfort+ was not a separate booking category and at that time there wasn't any option to buy the comfort+ or I would have, or last least tried to. Not a big deal.

I just checked a few bookings I have and noticed that the trip booked with my Amex companion certificate does not offer me the option to purchase up to Comfort Plus, but another trip booked in the main cabin with cash (no certificates or vouchers) gives me the option to purchase up to Comfort Plus or First Class for a price. The price fluctuates daily.
