delta; carry ons and 'personal items'

DBF and I are staying at the Poly May 21st-26th. Our flights down and back are late (7pm) and arriving late (after 10) and ive heard im allowed a carry on and a 'personal item'

I want to travel carry on only, and use my carry on and personal item as all i need. how big can my personal item be? does a backpack count?

DBF has a military back pack that his 4 yr old neice can hide in do it can fit all of his stuff for the whole time were there. My carry on is a smaller so the personal item is going to be the rest i hope.

will a big tote bag work? i want to take my laptop, a carry on and personal item, can i stick my laptop in my carry on or does it have to be separate and counts as my personal item?

It's ONE carry on and a personal item. The personal item should fit under the seat in front of you. My laptop bag will fit under there. My "rolling" laptop bag won't.

Here's the offical line
Size and Weight Restrictions
If your carry-on bag doesn't meet these size and weight restrictions it must be checked, and all checked baggage rules will apply. Your bag must:

Weigh less than 40 pounds (18 kg).
Not exceed 45 inches (length + width + height).
Fit easily in our SizeCheck® unit (approximately 22"x14"x9").
Fit in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.

Personal Items
You're allowed one personal item from this sample list:

Purses, briefcases, camera cases, and diaper bags
Laptop computers (can’t be checked and must be carried on)
Items of a similar or smaller size to those above

If your laptop fits in your totebag then you have your personal item.

Now remember the PURSE is not a "free third item" (Women seem to think it is LOL!)

so if i can fit the rest of my clothes in my tote with my laptop, im all set?

DBF used the same back pack last year when we went and it was fine, it fit in the bucket and through the scanner the TSA people even said that was a smart bag to bring

To clarify what CarolA posted, you can put 1 thing in the overhead compartment and 1 thing completely underneath the seat in front of you.

Last year, fewer airlines were charging for the first piece of checked luggage, so passengers for the most part were not trying to carry on everything but the kitchen sink, so airlines were not as strictly enforcing the size/wieght restrictions. Also, while the TSA might consider the backpack a smart bag to bring in general, each airline has different rules/size limits and the TSA is not responsible for enforcing them - the airline is.

If he packs it and measures it and its length + height + width is 45 inches or less, it will likely be accepted by the airline (but note some airlines are reducing even the carry-on size). If it exceeds those measurements, he may well NOT be allowed to use it as a carry-on.

You might also look at what size airplane Delta is flying that day. We flew from Austin to JFK last August and the plane was SMALL (A CRJ that only sat 45 people). The overhead compartments were smaller than usual. So, many people with standard rolling carryons had to gate check them (no charge for this). I only mention it in case you take something in your large carryon that you might need during the flight.

I have a similar question about this Size Check unit--does my bag have to completely fit in this unit? What if its total size doesn't exceed the 45 inches, will it fit in this unit no matter what? I'd appreciate any advice from Delta travelers who have carried on! Thanks

We flew Delta last week. DH and I each brought with us a rolling carry-on sized suitcase and a stuffed backpack. Suitcases went in the overhead compartments and the backpacks when under our seats. No worries!

Your bag has to be less than 45 inches total AND follow (at least close to) the dimensions given of 22"x14"x9". These dimensions (and the sizer) are designed so that bags can be put in the overhead compartment while maximizing the number of bags that can fit in there. A bag that is 43"X1"X1" will not fit easily into the overhead compartment (and will definitely not fit under the seat in front of you) and will not be permitted as carry-on, for example.

Specifically - and because I'm a stickler about some things, and because some people interpret statements literally, and because some people reading this thread have never flown before (did I cover all the disclaimers?), the personal item must fit entirely under the seat in front of you, not under your seat. The space under your seat 'belongs' to the passenger in the seat behind you.

And, at least on JetBlue, entirely means entirely - no straps hanging out in the aisle if you're in the aisle seat, no part of the item protruding into the open space where your feet go. It's a safety issue.

Actually, it might - providing the overhead compartment is at least 43 inches from left to right, and that the item (say, a fishing rod or cue stick) be placed in last, lengthwise, and thank you for reminding me I STILL need to write to JetBlue about my cane getting buried overhead...

Well, usually my cane - granted, MUCH less than 43 inches long - fits perfectly at the front of the compartment after all other items are in. THIS time, I handed it to a Flight Attendant before the flight was fully boarded. NEVER again. Not just because it was buried, but because they were so reluctant to dig through the compartment for it (despite assurances to the contrary), that I had to grab onto various parts of the plane to support myself to and from the restroom.

NOT happy.

I know on some planes the overhead bins are separate bins (i.e. they don't run the full length), so it wouldn't fit in those types of planes (though your cane might), which was what I was thinking of (plus I really wanted to use the snooty smiley).

You are correct. The backpacks were stored under the seat in front of us. Although our Delta flight was pretty relaxed and the bags were just sitting at our feet.

Having only carry-on is definitely the way to go. Especially with the new baggage fees.
