I am driving from Vermont to Portsmouth VA for an extended Labor Day weekend. MapQuest and Google Maps both direct me down the Delmarva Peninsula rather than I-95 through Baltimore/DC/Richmond.

Do you recommend this route? Any pros and cons? Thanks.

Take the route. There is no way you want to go through DC/Baltimore to get to Portsmouth. We travel from Chesapeake(next to Portsmouth) up to DE all the time and sometimes Philly. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel is your best bet distance and traffic wise. Nice easy ride and a straight shot all the way down the Eastern Shore. I seriously cannot think of 1 "con" to going this way. Less traffic both directions lots of places for gas/eats and a stretch on the road. Beautiful ride as well. :thumbsup2

Ok, I should say the toll on the Bridge/tunnel is $12.00. BUT the whole thing is almost 18 miles long. And there is a restaurant/gift shop/fishing pier along the way. We eat there on our way up and its good food. So if you consider that a con, then that would be the only 1. Still much better than the DC route which would automatically take longer and guaranteed to find you stuck in traffic somewhere.
