Decorating Your Room For The Holidays

This week I have started to get into full planning mode for our upcoming trip to Disneyland November 15-22. Last year was my first holidays at WDW and this year will be my first holidays at Disneyland. Last year at our resort many people decorated their doors, porches, rooms and patios. At night is was fun to see the extra festive touches many added to their rooms. Does this happen at Disneyland?

We will be staying at the Grand Californian and I will be picking up some pine garland, lights, a wreath for the door and a tree. Last year we stopped at target and picked up these items. The best part was all the tree ornaments we picked up in the parks. I loved picking one out from each country at Epcot. We brought home the ornaments but I arranged with another family to pass on my decorations. They did the same and at the end of the holiday I got a note from each family saying thanks. I think this year's theme is rustic holiday. Lots of arts and crafts inspired decorations.

Decking out the room was a bit of work but it extended the magic. I loved it. Love to hear your feedback. Have a holiday picture of your room, post it. I will put mine up later. Have a great day.

So here is a picture of the tree we had in the room and a close up of the Epcot snowman ornament. I think I ended up buying 10 of these to give away. I am a huge holiday nut and since going to Disney is my birthday and Christmas gift I do it over the top. Take care and have a great day.

Steven, How exciting to see someone else has the "Christmas Decorator Bug". So, I am not the only one? I have not done Disney at the Holiday season, but just told Dbf that after our August trip I am planning our first Dec. trip. Enough is enough, I must combine my two fave things - Disney and Christmas! It does'nt get any better than that. I think decorating your room is a fab idea! that way you never have to miss the Christmas spirit floating throughout the parks. I am afraid I change my Christmas theme every year also. while it makes my friends and family cringe ( I do tend to go overboard) I enjoy it. Good for you , love the pics- just the encouragement I needed! bravo! Tina

Another idea I had for a theme is a Nightmare Before Christmas. This will be the first time my other half has seen the holiday overlay and I know he will love it. I would bring our black Halloween garland, and decorate it with white cotton snow on top, orange lights and our NBC ornaments. So many choices......

OMG!!!! How exciting I LOOOOVE Nightmare. Its so awesome to see people make the most out of the holidays; especially in their rooms! I've never heard of it before, although I've never stayed during the holidays. Do post more pictures up; they're great to see !!

This is not necessarily about decorating, but let me just say, you are in for a special treat! The GCH is the BEST hotel to stay in at DLR for the holidays - people on this board are probably sick of me saying so! It has a gorgeous, elegant, warm and spacious, dimly lit lobby with all kinds of dark wood, there is a hearth/fireplace area, a lounge, there is a huge Christmas tree in the middle of the lobby, and there are all kinds of comfy chairs and sofas on which to relax, sip hot drinks or alcoholic beverages and have quality time with your family and friends, or strike up conversations with brand new people from all over the world, by the tree. Christmas carolers come every night to the GCH lobby to sing in front of the tree, and take requests, and the lobby crowds come to a standstill to watch them. It truly envelops you in the holiday spirit. The only thing that would make it even more magical is if there were snow on the ground outside and a big gingerbread house in the lobby!

And the fact that you are staying at the GCH for a WEEK - I am jealous! That would be so great and relaxing! I had a plan to try to get back there this coming December for three nights - or even two, at this rate - but I had an unexpected financial setback, so I will be lucky to just be able to go sit in the lobby of the GCH, even if I don't stay there! I was there last year for Christmas, and I was bitten by the bug. I knew I would have to come back again this coming December!

I LOVE your idea about getting the different ornaments at Epcot. In fact, that is one of the main reasons I would like to go to Epcot during the holidays is to see the different decorations from the different countries. I appreciate that you are getting into the spirit of Christmas this way, and you will be at DL to see the two holiday overlays for HM and IASW - those are worth the trip alone! SO many people are disenchanted during the holidays, or maybe one person is excited and the other people they are with are being grouches, so it brings everyone down. But you are really making an effort to make your holidays special, and I am certain that the person/people you are traveling with really appreciate you for that! Not all men go out of their way to make a holiday memorable - a Disney holiday, at that!

I agree with Sherry--the Grand Californian knows how to make Christmas special! The decorations in the lobby were magical when we walked through last year in Dec. and that is why we decided to stay there this year for our Xmas trip.

In love the pictures and I love the idea of being festive and decorating for the holidays! If dressing up the resort rooms in Disneyland isn't a tradition as of yet, I say you should be the one to start it! My dream is to one day take my family to DL over the holidays, and you can bet I'll be dragging along garlands and lights and window clings.....that is just how I roll!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think we should make this a new tradition at Disneyland. Start the planning. How would you decorate you patio, door and room. If you flying into Anaheim, where are the local dollar stores, targets and wal-marts. After staring this thread, we are going for rustic holidays to match the hotel. Our tree will be saturated with matte finished red, gold, green glass ornaments, white random twinkle lights, babys breath greens, and some Disney ornaments that I pick up there. I will also look for 4-5 poinsettia plants for the porch area and a pine garland for the railing with white random twinkling lights. I think that should look stunning at night. Thoughts?

Okay Steven, If I make it to DLR this Christmas, ( I usually get my way,lol) My theme will be "Cali Christmas" I will be going for a nautical/surfer decor. I have never done this type of theme so it will be fun! I figured since I am in CAli, do like the Californians
So, I will be on the lookout for nautical themed ornaments for the Christmas tree. garland for the patio of course with multi-color lights to make it colorful. Strategically placed Sea shells on the tree and around the room. DO you do stockings? Must have stockings in my room. Hmmm. maybe have my friend that is good with crafts make me a Big sun with a Santa hat for the door decoration in place of the traditional wreath. Gonna be very non-traditional on this one. Maybe some topiarys for the patio as well with fruits (oranges or lemons) oh yeah, I can do this! LOve your ideas Steven. I did a similar theme one year (country Christmas) with big Ecru lace bows on the pine tree. Pretty!

We also have decorated at both WDW and DLR for xmas. California has some different fire code rules . If someone with experience could post suggestions before items are purchased. For example I don't think you can have lights in your room. We had window clings , stockings , small trees without lights, holiday napkins and plates.

Thank you for bringing that up. Never thought of fire codes that would prohibit some decorations. Anyone have details about these codes in anaheim.

Steven, they had some beautiful ornaments in the GH gift shop last year. I picked up some after Christmas last year.
