How do you decorate your sugar cookies? What kind of frosting/icing do you use if any? Just looking for different ideas to make them interesting and fun:)

Royal icing! So much fun! Bake at 350 blog has a good tutorial, as do seveal other bloggers.

I use regular white icing in a can. Sometimes I color some of it red and green. Then I use lots of different sprinkles to make them fun. I always make sure to buy my sprinkles early in the season since the good ones seem to sell out fast.

I made some cookies for a cookie exchange yesterday.

I bought mini-sugar cookies pillsbury dough (had it on hand anyway). Each mini cookie went into a mini cookie tin.

The finish cookie was then decorated with a squirt of Betty Crocker decorator icing in the center. Then I added sprinkles and then on top of that used a different color betty crocker icing to make a zig zag design.

Someone just e-mailed for the recipe, so I guess it was fun. I forgot we had to include a recipe and I felt bad when I had to say "buy cookie dough and frosting and then describe what to do above.

My kids loved them as well.

Here's a funny idea: My husband makes a Santa or two anatomically correct. I threaten him every year that I'm giving his mother that cookie. Our angels sometimes get bikinis. LOL! I use white canned frosting and sandwich bags to pipe it or butter knives to spread it. We use all kinds of decorations too-chocolate sprinkles, red hots, silver balls, colored sprinkles, etc. We spend a whole night decorating with music blasting. It's one of the traditions we've set.

we mix powdered sugar with either lime juice or lemon juice. YUM. Add food coloring.

(if you want to try it, use a decent amount of powdered sugar, but not much juice. doesn't take much.)

Great ideas, thanks everyone. I was kind of hoping for a snow day tomorrow because late last week they were predicting one but the storm is too far out to see. Now we will just have to wait until we all have the day off on Wednesday to do it...more time to collect everyone's awesome ideas!!!

Do something that is personal to you. They don't have to look like something that came out of a magazine. The year we had the most fun decorating cookies and gingerbread house was the year of Hurricane Katrina. We lost most of our belongings to the storm and had a blue tarp on our roof for a long time, so we thought our ginger bread house should look the same. :rotfl2: We were all living away for Christmas but we had a blast decorating!
