So my A530 decided that it didn't like its shutter button anymore and broke. Now its pretty pointless to try to get it serviced so I am suddenly looking for a new camera...

I have 3 choices and I cant decide which route to take..

1) Go with what I can easily afford and replace it was a camera under 100 (similar to a Samsung S760 or Canon Powershot A470) which would be functional but not have a lot of the features and ISOs I like using (I very rarely use Auto anymore)

2) Go "equal" to what I had and get one in the 175-200. Which would have the features, ISO and more advanced features with what Im used to (and for most would have more megapixel than the D40- but since I dont print larger than 8x10 doesnt really affect things)

3) Go with what I want- a DSLR most likely the Nikon D40 which while I can afford it it would be a stretch (was planning on purchasing closer to summer) but would last longer in use than 1 or 2 as I already planned to upgrade soon (but still would keep the point and shoot handy so eventually either way Ill have both). Im finding the d40 for about 380/400...

Save up and get the DSLR. I have the D40 and love it. Do not settle with a camera you really do not want just to get back taking pictures.

If you need to wait a few months to afford the camera you want that time will be worth it. I saved up for months before I could purchase the D40.

I purchased mine from B&H Photo. They are currently selling the D40 for $409. Shipping is under $20 and you will not have to pay sales tax unless you live in the state of New York. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/471716-REG/Nikon_25420_D40_SLR_Digital_Camera.html

If you really have the desire to learn to be a better photographer and a camera that is going to give you more control get the DSLR. If you can afford it now go for it and learn everything you can with the kit you purchase. And if you save until summer I am sure you will have the money you will need to get another lens or external flash that you will certainly be wanting till then. The D40 is a great choice for learning. I have one and I love it. I am saving right now to upgrade to the D300. Here is an excellent thread called the learning curve started by Pea-n-me. It has alot of very good information on many different subjects that new and experienced DSLR owners wish to learn. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1794070

If you decide to go with the dslr I dont think you will be disappointed ................ but beware............you will experience something much worse :rolleyes1 and the only cure is to spend countless hours in the online stores drooling over what you want to add to your arsenal next.

Thank you spintetnglr, glad it's been helpful. :thumbsup2

I don't want to throw you a curveball, d-emily, but I believe that Canon has some kind of "upgrade" program, so that if you send them your broken camera, you'll get a discount on a new Canon - whichever model you choose. I've never used it, but I've seen it mentioned here before. Something to consider.

True except for one thing. They are refurbs, not new. They probably are in near perfect condition, but will have a short warranty.
