So, most of you who have seen my posts know that my youngest kiddo is ASD. We are constantly looking for new ways to help him, help our other son, and help us as a family work on it. So we found out today that there is this awesome weekend retreat for families of ASD kids coming up. Great right? Yeah, it falls on the exact same weekend as a big family get together and wedding. We have already RSVP'd in the positive for the wedding.

I don't think it's a case of "We'll have more fun at the camp." Because I really don't think that would be the case. But, we would be able to really get some good information and training to help our child progress.

So what to do... Any thoughts?

How close are you to the people getting married? If it was me I would go the camp for your son. You can always catch up with family anytime, I would image this camp doesn't come along often

If you choose to go to the camp (and only you can decide what to do), just ensure you contact the engaged couple and tell them that unfortunately, you will be unable to attend.

On a personal note, I believe (both from seeing it with my own eyes professionally and as a parent) that great things come from supportive parent/family environments such as the camp you're describing. My district runs an Autism Support Group. It's been amazing to watch the families relate and learn.

Have fun no matter what you decide.

If you aren't tight with the bride and groom, go to the camp. Those type of things are fountains of information and help. It helps so much to SEE for yourself you are not alone, Kwim?

I'd say give your regrets to the couple and choose the camp.

DS has ADHD and LD and this past October we moved him to a school that specializes in kids that need support in those areas. It is astounding the difference in our child and our home life from him getting what he needs not to mention the support his dad and I get from the other parents who "get it". You can't beat working with professionals who understand your child's needs and can meet them, AND then give you the tools to meet them too.
