Hi-

I am planning to buy back into the DVC. I used to be an owner, sold out and would like to join again.

Can anyone tell me the downside to a December use year?
I used to have September and never had any issues.

Thanks!

If you travel in Sept. Oct. Nov. and you have to cancel you are past the banking window.

if you never cancel, there is no downside to any UY.

if you have to cancel a thanksgiving trip a couple of months out and you have a december UY, you will be past your banking window and the pts will expire at the end of november.

(if you had an oct UY and cancel a thanksgiving trip a couple of months out, you'd still have till then next may to decide what to do with the current year pts.)

it's preferable to get a UY where you never travel in the 3-4 months prior to the end...so a dec UY works best if you don't travel from september to the end of november.

:) We have a Dec UY and so far I like it. Because DH is a fireman and has to schedule vacation each year in Dec for the upcoming year, it helps me keep things straight. While UY has nothing to do with when you can make your reservations.....it kinda does in my case becasue I cannot insure my vacations until DH gives me the go ahead. We always go to WDW Oct-Dec, so Dec UY would not be good for us if we cancelled....but it does give me and my situation the best advantage for 11 month booking with DH's schedule.

Where will you be buying??

Thanks very much! I could only remember people discussing the cons of the December use year way back.
We used to own points at VWL and BCV. I want to own at the VWL again even though the time is shorter than BLT, etc.
I love the feeling of that resort! I know that if at 7 months out I can only stay there I would never be unhappy about it.
I am only starting back with 50 points right now and will add on if I can afford to at a later date probably at a different resort.

just remember that if you add at a different resort, you cannot mingle the pts until 7 months out. your new pts cannot be used to book VWL at 11 months and your VWL pts cannot be used at the new resort at 11 months.

UY should have no impact on 11 month booking.

So what is the best possible use year start month ?
John

As the foregoing makes clear, it depends on your intentions.

Our most likely visit times are summer and holidays, so June is the right UY for us. But for those that might like to go sometimes on spring break, that's not ideal.

Pick the 4 months block you're LEAST likely to go. That will answer your question. If it's the holidays, go with a UY in the early part of the year. If it's summer, go with a UY in the fall. If it's the spring, go with a UY in the late spring or early summer. Etc.

depends.

i prefer to travel in november and december. i hate to travel in the summer - too hot.

so an oct UY works great for me.

but your situation might be different.

(and if my situation changes, oct might not be the "best" UY for me any longer - it happens...)

I have a December use year. One downside I see is that the actual year, and your use year only match for one month. Like I'm now in my 2009 use year, but its 2010. It never stops confusing me. :)

That's also our only issue too. I understand it but when explaining things to other people, it's quite confusing.

The year difference gets me as well. Particularly since we have both December and February use years!

I think the end of the contract will be interesting. The December 2041 annual allotment of points will have two months of contract time remaining. Borrowing well in advance is the likely strategy. But I suspect that by then it will not be our problem to deal with.

UY should have no impact on 11 month booking.

UY doesn't have an impact but unlike most everyone, DH plans his vacations for an entire year in Dec. So I have to decide on several weeks now, then hope he gets them, then make the reservation. So while I will have 11 months to book our Oct-Dec 2011, because the end of Dec 2010, DH will say "yeah honey I have that week scheduled go ahead. So Jan 2, I can book the 11 month reservation, because I have a gaurantee on the date. I want to make a trip the first week of March or May 2011---but I will not have a booking advantage on those dates and will have to take what I can get at that point, becasue DH won't tell me until January. I know it is stupid and confusing....

I will never know what dates my vacations will be until January--hence being able to use the home resort advantage---as soon as the dates are a sure thing. It doesn't have to do with UY...I am blonde and a Dec UY just makes it easier to follow, and Dec is the month I learn when my vacations will be for the following year. :confused3 OK I am done now...moving on....

Thanks so much for all the info. December will work fine for me for sure.

I have the Dec use year as well, but for some reason I was thinking we get our last points Dec 1, 2040 and get none Dec 1, 2041. Not sure if I made that up in my head, or if I heard it from somewhere.

We've been members since 2005 and never had any issues with December use year. I think once you get used to any use year you can make it work for you. Plus we think of it as a Christmas gift each year. :)
