I have recently sold most of my DVC points. I am planning on purchasing BWV resale. I really need the 11 month advantage for getting that H/C 2 bedroom standard. We usually travel first 2 weeks in December. If we add on a week to our trip it is the last week of November. Sometimes but rarely we travel during NYE week. I am thinking if we book December and need to cancel then I have until November 30th to then use the points(correct). Not bad since F&W is in November. I need to concern myself with canceling with a H/C adult son. I currently have a February use year and as I said have sold all but one contract because February wasn't good for us. Never would or have traveled during summer with Dson. I see a lot of October use years come and go but then if I have to cancel I would then be required to travel before October 1st(correct). Way to hot for Dson. I would be canceling a December trip if needing to cancel. I know wordy but Hey:confused3...........Susan

I'm not sure I fully understand what you are asking, but I'll try to respond as best I can.

In general... It is best to not travel in the last four months of your use year as this eliminates the ability to bank those points if you have to cancel for some reason.

So... If there is a chance you would be traveling the last week of November as you stated, then an October use year would be the best for you. You don't say if there are any other times of the year you travel, but you said that traveling when it is hot doesn't work well. This means you probably won't be traveling in June, July, August and September. If that is true, October is a very good use year to have.

Hope this helps...

oct UY is best.

not correct.

if you are traveling in dec 2014 and have an oct UY, you would be traveling in your 2014 UY - which does not end until sept 30, 2015. assuming you cancel more than a month in advance, you would have until may 31, 2015 to bank current UY pts used to reserve that stay. any banked or borrowed pts would need to be used for a stay from oct 1, 2014 to sept 30, 2015, as they cannot be moved out of that UY.

We hate the heat so we have an October UY. Best for travel between October and May which is the banking period for a October UY.

We have had to cancel vacations twice and bank.

You are correct I would not travel in the summer. Would not travel from April to end of October. Found the hard way it is to hot. I would 99 percent of the time travel first 2 or 3 weeks of December. I always borrow points to complete a vacation.... The new plan of travel will be to have 220 BWV points which allows me one week in a (2 br standard view) Going every other year and borrowing from the next use year to make it possible to stay 2 weeks at a time. Originally the thought was a October use year because I don't believe there are November use years for BWV. Then I realized if I needed to cancel with a October use year the points would need to be used before my next October use year. So if I had a December trip planned using 2014 and 2015 points planned and need to cancel and I had and October use year I would have to travel with those canceled points by September 30th 2015? With a December use year same situation I would be able to travel with those canceled points until November 30th 2015???? That I wouldn't mind because of F&W... Hope this is explained better...

borrowed or banked pts, yes. also yes to pts that wind up in holding status if you cancel at the last minute.

So if I had a December trip planned using 2014 and 2015 points planned and need to cancel and I had and October use year I would have to travel with those canceled points by September 30th 2015?

for the borrowed pts, yes. assuming you cancel more than a month in advance and avoid the holding status, you could still bank the current 2014 UY pts if you wanted.

positives and negatives.

yes, you would be able to rebook a november 2015 stay if you canceled your december 2014 stay.

but if you had 4 nights booked in late november 2014 as part of that reservation, you would have had to borrow from your 2014 UY to book those nights. so if you needed to cancel (with a dec UY), those points would expire on nov 30, 2014. your banking window for a dec UY closes on july 31, so those pts would likely disappear into the void unused if you had to cancel after july 31, 2014. (which is why most of us voted for an oct UY when you mentioned you might travel some in late nov.)

Thanks you guys. I had been leaning towards an October use year but started second guessing myself. After reading your answers I think I will choose October. Susan

You are welcome... My theory is: If I don't ever plan to travel in the four months preceeding the use year, then that should be a good use year for me. This may not be the BEST theory, but it makes sense to me. :)

October would give you the most flexibility to travel in the 8 months that aren't 'terrible' from a heat perspective (although a couple of them can certainly be pretty warm), and also gives you options for that last week in November you talked about without crossing use years.

If you had to cancel a December trip for some reason with an October use year, you would still have Jan, Feb, Mar and April to reschedule without fear of losing current, banked or borrowed points and the weather should generally be reasonable.

we really enjoy our Dec UY but im sure Oct is just as good it depends how far out you want your 11 month window to go.

I would do a October use year. Use year has nothing to do with when you can reserve. You need to have the points available for that date. Traveling in November with a December use year is way risky if something happens. You would loose your points.

I echo response that Oct is the best for BWV, unless you wanna travel in summer. It covers F&W, Xmas, Spring break. We actually have one Oct UY BWV in ROFR process :woohoo:.

Your months are incorrect, with an October UY you can bank until the end of May.
