December in South Africa?

Hi everyone,

We are planning on our first ABD experience and have chosen South Africa for our destination. I am considering two times: August or December. Honestly, December works much better for my schedule, but I was wondering if anyone has experience travelling to South Africa during that time. I know that it is warmer and busier that time of year, but would that significantly impact the experience?

Any input is greatly appreciated!! :)

Our family went to South Africa (not ABD) in August two years ago. Since it was their winter, it was chilly down in Cape Town, and not too bad up in the safari parks. One thing I would check out is the mosquito/malaria risk at certain times of year based on that itinerary. In some parts of the country I seem to remember the risks are higher in the summer.

December is summer, Cape Town will be nice and not too hot but the safari portion in the Lowveld will be hot! Also as everything will be lush and green due to the rain it will not be as easy to spot game. This is also the main holiday season for the South Africans so crowds will be high at many places.
August can still be cold and wet, this year the cape still had freezing temps in August. Better for game viewing but can be very cold on the game drives in morning and evening.

Thanks so much for the info!

Based on the feedback, and on some research I've done, I think we are going to aim for going in August and, if the dates don't work, will select another destination rather than visit South Africa in December. It sounds like with crowds and weather, December isn't a very good time to visit.
