I decided to make the mess and go with the tye dye again. I order my dyable clothing from Dharma Trading
Tye dye is fun but messy
If you want to try it here are a few things I learned
use 100% cotton to get the best color saturation
if you use a kit, it way underestimates how much you can dye - if it says 5 shirts, count on 2
use gloves - it dyes your hands too! - glasses or goggles will protect your eyes
follow the directions which will include -
wash and dry your garments before you tye dye - don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets
make sure to soak the garments ahead of time in the soda ash
use a kit or special dyes for tye dye - procion dyes - not RIT Dyes
use the dye mix very liberally - the garment needs to look soaked
wrap in plastic and let it sit for at least the minimum time
rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse then wash by itself and rinse again - you should see minimal running by that time
wash with similar colors for quite a few times till you're sure it doesn't run
consider doing a test on a cheap shirt first.
watch some of the YouTube Videos to get ideas and learn technique ( I do better watching then following directions)
Here are some I've looked at:
