Hi, so I was told at the bank that I could bring my CIBC debit card to the USA and take money out from any bank machine, use my debit card, to get money out of my savings. Does anyone know if I can do this FOR SURE in Disney world? I dont want to bring too much cash with me, becuse I know my son and I do plan to do quite a few pricey things down there, so I was just hoping to get $ while I am down there. I just want to make sure, and not get down there and not be able to.

I've used mine before, but beware of the service charges. The ATM's in Disney will charge you a surcharge, and then CIBC charges you something like $3.00 for the transaction here. So if you're taking money out, make sure that you are taking out enough to make it worthwhile to pay the charges (ie. don't just withdraw $40 at any one time). As well, maybe get CIBC to up your daily limit because you might want to take out $300 US but with the exchange rate, it won't allow you to take out that much.

Thanks for the advice, I can take out $1,500 per day in Canada so that would mean I could take out at least $1000 USD then right? So yeah I was plaiing to take out 100's at a time.

Careful, some ATM's here in the US will only allow $500US a day withdrawl. I used to work for an armored car company and the machines we changed out only allowed $500.

thanks for the heads up , is that per day per machine? Or . . . ?

Well I dont expect to take out more then that a day anyways lol
I am paying for the tix's and hotel/air on visa

Per machine. However, your bank itself may limit the amount per day. here in the US it serves to protect the bank if someone gets your card and pin number.

You should check with your bank. We have a 2000.00 limit here in Canada but it would not let us take out 300.00 US in Orlando. We had to take out 200.00US at a time....this took us by surprise. We took travellors cheques as well so we didn't have to use the ATM alot.

that lots of stores can't take CDN debit cards as pymt...apparently, they're set up on a different coding system? We tried our debit card once, and used the cc from then on...

HTH!!

Are you Staying on-site? An excellent advantage we found was using your room key and charging every thing to your room. No need to carry cash as there were very few places that we couldn't use our room card. Even at the stores in Downtown Disney took it. It was great. Less nervous about have all that cash on me. It worked in the food courts, gift shops so you didn't have to go looking for change just to buy just one drink. It was wonderful for us.

There is a limit up to $500 but when getting close to the limit you just pay it off with your credit card at front desk and they set you up again.
Also if staying on site you can get your purchases sent to your room so you don't have to carry them around all day!!!! Excellent benefit that we take FULL advantage of.

I was staying at POFQ and used the ATM machine in the lobby to take out $500 US using my CIBC card (we headed to Atlantic City after Disney so we needed some gambling cash) and it was no problem.

With regard to debit cards, you shouldn't have any problem taking out cash from the ATM's. The charge is only usually $2. or $2.50 US, and CIBC will just use the exchange rate and usually I only get hit with a $3. CAD fee (total). I've never been charged the ATM fee and a fee from CIBC. So it should only be around $3. or so Canadian for each transaction fee. I use my CIBC debit card here at the ATM's weekly. It is true that even though your limit is upwards of $1,000, some machines will only give $500. Funny enough the only one I've encountered is RBC Centura - which is Royal Bank of Canada. I guess they recognize the CIBC card in the machine ;)

As far as using your debit card at stores, it cannot be done. They have a different system here and don't use traditional "debit" cards. They are "check cards" (I'm sure you've seen the Visa Check card commericals) I call them "fake" visa/MC as you do not get credit priviledges even though the visa logo is on the card. It's just a way for the banks down here to make extra $$$ by charging Visa/MC for the logo.

Anyway, if you swipe your Canadian debit card at a store, it doesn't give you the option of chequing/savings like it does in Canada, and therefore won't complete your transaction.

Do you mean that only Florida cannot accept debit cards at stores for payment because of a different system or the everywhere in the US???? WE quite often go shopping in Buffalo and use our debit card all the time with no problem. Just wondering..... :confused3

I don't know exactly.

I have an account at CIBC in Canada and my CIBC debit card won't work in the retail store machines down here. It has to do with the fact that most stores use the "fake visa" system so there is no pad to punch in your PIN number. Therefore, you sign a slip of paper like a visa, but it's not a charge.

Walmart, Kroger, Publix and some of the other larger stores have PIN pads, but they do not have the step to take it out of "checking" or "savings" so the transaction won't work. As an aside all ATM machines do have that option of check or savings so of course the debit cards work at almost all ATM's.

For example, my CIBC debit won't work for purchases at our local disney store, because it is a "check" card machine with no PIN pad. Therefore, they would have no way to complete the transaction. If I handed my CIBC card, they would ask what that card was (because of no VISA/MC logo on it)

My advise would be just be prepared in the event that your debit card won't work for purchases.

So if I go to just a reg. bank machine I can get money out on my CIBC card right, there will be a keypad, and option of check or savings?

Can I find these machines all throughout the Disney Complex?

Keep in mind also that the exchange rate may not be to your advantage either.

For example you go to your Cdn bank and purchase Travellers cheques for 1000.00 (or more whatever) dollars. Typically you receive a better rate for purchase of USD over a thousand then under.

When you withdraw from an ATM you pay the surcharge fee's & the exchange rate charged by the US bank to your Cdn Bank (ie potentially a higher rate as they are charging CIBC/Royal etc to profit from that end of the transaction as well) and then your bank figures in their cut of the exchange..so even if the spot rate was 1.25 you might be paying 1.30 instead.

Take travellers cheques...you can cash them at your resort and your protected from loss/theft.

Yes that is correct. We did this with our RBC card. There are bank machines all over the resorts and at the entrance to the parks.

If you have a paypal account you can use that card at disney and earn 1% cash back on your purchases. It looks like a mastercard but is actually a debit card that can be swiped like a mastercard and signed for, but will use the funds in your account. If you are interested goto www.paypal.com

We use this for our ebay accounts and pay for all of our purchases for ebay this way and earn alittle extra back on those purchases. But this could be a way around the canadian debit card problem. There is no charges for paypal either unless someone is sending you money, then paypal takes a small service fee.

This might be getting a little confusing. To clarify:

- you won't have any trouble getting cash from most Bank Machines (ATM's) here in the States with your debit card. The ones at Disney definately work.

- where you'll have trouble is trying to purchase goods from a store with your debit card. The US has a different system with check cards, and in my experience I've never been able to purchase goods with my CIBC card.

Thanks for clearing that up. ATM;s work fine, but done exect to use your card, like you do in Canada at the store. Thanks

Has anyone ever used US version of the Visa Gift Card ?

http://www.usa.visa.com/personal/cards/prepaid/visa_gift_card.html

This seems to me the best way to avoid the 2.5% "Exchange Fee" that credit card companies charges. Some places listed sells them fee-free, and of course it's free to use...

Visa Canada through Citizens Bank (Vancouver) issues the only Visa gift card in Canada for the West Edmonton Mall. This card is only available in person and is in CAD$, hence not saving the 2.5 % fee...
